<div>Since last October I have been losing my ability to walk. Most of you know I’ve been undergoing a lot of medical things lately. I have MS which I’ve had for almost 30 years. While they still haven’t figured out what’s wrong with me now they are trying to help me with some of the things that will make my life easier. It started out as just difficulty walking up a curb to now not being able to walk unassisted, not being able to do steps at all, my body collapsing completely frequently and overall using my legs at all is now unsafe. My arms are following suit now. I now have a hospital bed to raise me because I cannot get up from anything regular height. I had to get an indoor stairlift for my stairs. I had to order an outdoor motorized stairlift that I can take places so if I needed to do steps I would be able. I need grab bars in both bathrooms and at the top of my steps. I need raised toilet seats in both bathrooms and a shower chair in my bathroom. I have a regular walker and two rollator style walkers because one has a basket which helps me to be able to carry things because I can’t carry anything. I also am waiting on a custom motorized wheelchair that UMMC rehab and orthopedic center has ordered for me. For all of these various medical devices I need it will be around $5,000 for the part I have to pay but there are more things that I need as well. I really went back and forth on doing a go fund me and realized I just needed to try to get help as best as possible. I am on a very fixed income with SSDI. I have no ability to Make extra money right now because all of my time is spent in therapy of various kinds. My next step with be a plasma infusion which will bring more expenses but I will deal with those expenses when I get to that point. I appreciate anything anyone can do for me. <div>My name is Story. I have lived a colorful life and picked up nicknames around the world, so some of you may know me as Mallaidh-Anne or Tam. I am thrilled to accept an offer to attend University College Dublin’s School of Irish, Celtic Studies and Folklore this autumn (2025).

<div>Although I graduated at the top of my class in my undergraduate degree, and I happily earned a small scholarship through community service work in 2022, I cannot afford the cost of attendance on my own. I am therefore turning to my community for support. I do not ask lightly, and it is only after the encouragement and insistence of friends and family that I am finally taking this step.

<div>I have dedicated the last eight years of my life to the study, preservation, interpretation, and presentation of natural resources and cultural heritage. Much of my work has focused on providing free education programs to people of all ages and backgrounds. Whether I’m leading fifth graders on a tree-identification hike or giving a virtual presentation to local senior centers on the five Pacific Northwest salmon species, I am so grateful to be doing this work!

<div>Upon earning my undergraduate degree in West Virginia in 2019, I moved to Ireland for a marine conservation internship, which extended to a long-term offer. When the Covid-19 pandemic interrupted my work, I moved to Alaska and then Washington state to work on numerous salmon, seal, and whale conservation projects.

<div>In 2023, I was thrilled to accept an unconditional offer to UCD for 2024. Unfortunately, health complications exacerbated by a Covid-19 infection interrupted my path, and I had to defer my offer for one year.

<div>I pivoted to a work-from-home job with less physical demands, to focus on intensive, weekly medical treatments and to save money for school. In my free time, I continued my conservation work with my former colleagues, as a volunteer for the marine mammal rescue team. I also co-founded a grassroots nonprofit which serves Queer people in rural, island communities.

<div>While my health has vastly improved so I can confidently succeed in school, I was impacted by layoffs in November 2024, dashing my school-savings goal. Despite my tireless efforts, I have yet to find full-time work. Like many Queer people who grew up in Appalachia, I have tangled with poverty in adulthood and even overcome homelessness. I work hard to keep up with everyday expenses, but I have no savings. I cannot defer a second time.

<div>I have a roughly $5,000 education award from my year of service in Americorps (non-military, despite how it sounds. The work was for State Parks). If I use the award, I will have to pay taxes on the award in spring 2026 while I am still a student. I am also rigorously applying for grants and scholarships, although there are few. I am not eligible for enough federal student loans to cover the cost of tuition and course fees, but I have completed the FAFSA and will accept what federal loans are available to me.

Back Story's Education and Conservation Work

<div>The good news: I’ve found true love.

<div>The bad news: my long-distance partner is disabled with worsening chronic illness and struggling to live alone in a state with very poor medical care. Most recently, a flareup of what we suspect to be MCAS (Mast Cell Activation Syndrome) has worsened every other ailment and severely limited what my partner can safely eat, touch, and inhale without risk of anaphylaxis.

<div>This is scary for both of us. I’m in the process of trying to relocate, but my partner needs more support than can wait on me to find a remote job I can take with me. This GoFundMe is to help me afford to take time away from work (I do not get paid leave of any kind) and help get my partner stabilized with frozen meals and medical travel.

<div>I know some of you are familiar with the story, but I went into a decent chunk of credit card debt trying to pay for therapy (out of network because unfortunately it's very hard to find a good therapist in my area), assistive devices, food, and general quality of life things. I'm working on getting a job that I can still do with my disabilities (severe chronic pain and mental illness), after being denied repeatedly for disability. In the meantime, I could really use some help paying the bills and trying to pay off my debt. I've been so stressed about this, I can't sleep and I'm on the edge of a panic attack all the time.
