My father, Eduardo Murillo Ortega (born 09/13/1977), was suddenly detained by ICE when he went in for an asylum-related appointment. Despite the fact that my parents have lived in the U.S. for nearly 30 years, paid taxes, built a life, and even received their green cards three years ago, my dad was arrested over a traffic violation that had already been properly handled in court with an attorney.

<div>He is now being held in the Alligator Alcatraz facility in South Florida, a place known for extremely harsh conditions. The food is spoiled, sleep is impossible, and detainees are constantly moved around to disorient them. My father, after enduring this treatment, has made the painful decision to sign voluntary deportation papers to Mexico rather than continue suffering there.

After 28 years of building a life in Williston, FL, they are being forced to pack up everything and leave it behind. <div>When my parents first came to the U.S. in the late 1990s, it was a different time. Immigrants seeking asylum were able to get driver’s licenses, work legally, and pay taxes using ITIN numbers. For decades, they worked hard, paid payroll taxes without refunds, and contributed through property taxes and sales tax in their community.

<div>Because of their immigration status, I was not eligible for federal student aid. I worked as a pharmacy technician at Walgreens for six years while earning my nursing degree, completely self-funding my education. My parents’ sacrifices made me who I am today.

<strong>Hi, I'm Cindy Pennington, the owner of The Casual Cat Cafe and I'm reaching out to you guys for help.</strong> <br /><br />The Casual Cat Cafe has been a place in the community where rescued cats can live cage free and enjoy a plethora of visitors to keep them company while waiting for their forever home for close to 3 years now. In that time, we have been able to find loving forever homes for <strong>234</strong> kitties. We also provide a great public space for people to come chill and spend some stress-free time in the company of some of DFWs most eligible kitties! About a year and half ago we also expanded our services to include cat boarding. Being the cat lovers we are, we opted to only open 3 kennels in order to allow them to be large and roomy (6ft x 4ft x 6.5ft - much larger than the average boarding kennel with dimensions around 2-3ft) and invested in kitty cameras so not only will kitty be as comfortable as possible during their vacation but pet parents can check in on them as often as they'd like. <br /><br />Many may not know this, but we have never turned a profit and with all the hours of love and elbow grease I've personally poured into the business, I have never paid myself a paycheck. For me, it was never about money and it has always been about the cats and people. I always make sure my employees are paid, our rent is on time, and that there is no shortage of toys, beds, scratchers, climbers, and quality food for the kitties' bellies. <br /><br />However, with the recent coronavirus outbreak we must close our cat lounge to the public and in doing so, cut off our main source of revenue. The cat cafe operates with over $6,000 a month in business expenses alone. This is in addition to the food, litter, toys, and vet care expenses which are mostly covered by the nonprofit Casual Cat Charities. Below is a list of our monthly expenses to be as transparent with you as possible.
