<div>The Odyssey Charter School community is rallying around one of its own—Kayla Young, a devoted mother of two, an educational assistant at Odyssey Preparatory Academy, and a woman who has shown remarkable strength through years of hardship.
</div>
<div>Kayla has battled chronic kidney disease since 2016. After the heartbreaking loss of her husband, a military veteran, in 2022, her health declined rapidly. In December 2023, she was diagnosed with kidney failure and began nightly dialysis treatments lasting more than eight hours. Despite the exhaustion and uncertainty, Kayla has continued to fight—determined to be present for her children and to build a future with them.

<div>She was placed on multiple transplant lists, but with an O positive blood type, she was told the wait could take years. In September 2025, she finally received the call she had been praying for—only to have the transplant canceled hours before surgery due to a high risk of rejection. It was a devastating setback after years of hope.
</div>
<div>Everything changed when Kayla reached out to Odyssey’s founder, Constance Ortiz, to share her story. The community responded immediately, and one act of compassion set a miracle in motion. A fellow Odyssey employee, someone Kayla had never met, stepped forward to be tested—and was a perfect match.
</div>
<div>Now, as Kayla prepares for her long awaited transplant and the months of recovery that follow, she and her children need our support more than ever.

Tale of 2 Kaylas- Kayla Young’s Fight for a Second Chance

<div> On Jan.1, 2022 Steve was diagnosed with Severe pancreatitis. He was admitted to the hospital and underwent dialysis, which was working. Overnight things went for a turn for the worst and his liver and kidneys started failing. His blood pressure was dropping drastically, he developed a 104 degree fever and at any moment he could code. He was maxed out on meds and that and a vent were the only thing keeping him alive. So I had to make the hard decision to keep him hooked up to machines and be in pain and possibly keep coding or to just let him go and end his suffering.  Steve L. Young Jr passed away at 3:30p on 01/05/2022.

<div>It all happened so fast and unexpectedly that nothing was prepared. He left behind two kids, Ciarah 11 and Carter 5 and his wife Kayla 38.

Help with Steve's funeral and his Family

To Larry's friends, family and colleagues...thank you for the overwhelming outpouring of prayers. They have impacted Larry in such a positive way. He is steadily recovering from the traumatic events from the last week. <br /><br />Because of the seriousness of the infection, Larry understood the need to amputate his left foot and leg inches below the knee. Larry has one more surgery scheduled for Monday, 5 May. We ask that all of your energy and prayers be focused on him Monday. <br /><br />After recovering from surgery, Larry will be moved to a rehabilitation facility closer to Danbury. Once we have identified the rehabilitation facility, we will post the information. We are certain he will be anxious to see his friends at that point. For now, we are limiting visitors and contact to family. Our focus this next week will be to see Larry through the surgery and prepare him for his move to the rehabilitation center. The doctor's expect we will be ready on Friday, 9 May or Monday, 12 May.<br /><br />Not only does Larry have mental and emotional and physical road ahead, he will also have some financial challenges.In support of those financial challenges if you want to send your  support please donate. <br />First accomodations for Larry will be update bathroom at his parents house to accomodate his needs and a wheel cahir ramp is going to be built.<br /><br />With love and thanks...<br />The Larry Linscombe Family
