<div>On Friday February 21, my sister's home was destroyed in a devestating fire. Beth &amp; Patrick have lived there for almost 20 years, raising all 4 of their children there. Just a year ago, on February 7, 2024 they lost their oldest daughter Vivian to a rare cancer. Fortunately the firefighters were able to save some items from Vivian's room.

<div>I am honored to be running the TCS NYC Marathon on Sunday, November 3rd for the second time. When I ran in 2018, I was fortunate enough to gain my entry via the "lottery" system.  This year, I will be earning my entry by running for something so important and meaningful. I am running as part of Team LiveOnNY. My 26.2 miles will be run in memory of the beautiful Lauren Marks.

<div>I never had the pleasure of meeting Lauren. However, I followed her story through my best running friend Becky and her husband, Matt. While Lauren was waiting for a necessary heart transplant, Matt was her transplant coordinator. She received her new heart in 2021, which was exciting news for Lauren, her husband, and her daughter. Unfortunately, even though Lauren was armed with a wonderful donor's heart, she lost her battle and passed away in November of 2023. Although our paths never crossed, I have heard stories of Lauren's strength, resilience, and kindness. Her final act of selflessness was becoming an organ donor herself through LiveOnNY in order to save the lives of others.

In Memory of Heather: Supporting Her Family

<div>Jackeline Obregon’s life was forever changed when the Lord called for her son, Jayden, on March 19, 2024. Jayden was a 15 year old student at Bishop Manogue High School. Jayden was easy going, knew how to make people laugh, and according to his friends, he was a great listener. He enjoyed building Legos, laughing with his friends and playing sports. Jayden was diagnosed with an aggressive form of Leukemia on December 6th, 2023, and by February the cancer had spread to his spine. He succumbed to his illness on Tuesday, March 19, 2024.

<div>The Lord called for Jayden too soon, although we must trust in him and his timing. This is an unimaginable experience for a parent and all of us are without words to relieve Jackie’s pain. What we CAN do is relieve some of the expenses that go with burying a child. All donations made will pay for the memorial and burial costs. If there is any money left it will relieve his family of any outstanding medical bills and the incurred costs of traveling to and from medical appointments.

<div>Services will be held Saturday, April 6th, 2024. A mass will be held at St. Teresa of Avila Church at 10:00 AM. Jayden’s funeral will follow at Walton’s Garden, where he will be laid to rest in peace with his Dad, who passed of cancer when Jayden was 7 years old. The two were very close and they will be reunited in love and will rest easy together.

<div>Jesse is a healthy 26-year-old man who had a routine procedure to have his 4 wisdom teeth extracted on December 8, 2023. What should have been a few days recovery rapidly escalated into a very acute emergency.

<div>Jesse's neck and face became swollen to the point where he could not eat, drink, or talk. He was in extreme pain and after going to the Emergency Room, Jesse was admitted into the ICU.
</div>

<div>Jesse has been in the hospital for over 22 days. During this time, he was in the ICU for 16 days, intubated for 10 days and has had 3 surgical procedures. Jesse still cannot eat or drink and can barely speak, for that reason he is now on a feeding tube. The definite cause of the acute emergency is still undetermined.
</div>

<div>With our support, we can assist Jesse in being able to cover his medical plan deductibles. Because this happened at the end of the year, he will need to pay deductibles for 2023 and 2024 as well as some basic living expenses.

Girls U18 Rugby Club to compete at Tropical 7's

<div>“Gooood morning skiers and riders!” Anyone who skis in Northern Vermont can hear the voice in their head, even when just reading the words. That’s Smugglers’ Notch snow reporter Hugh Johnson, who has provided the daily snow conditions as well as a local’s perspective of the Smuggs world for more than 25 years. During the winter, Hugh is up before dawn, often catching first chair with ski patrol or hiking to the top of Madonna to get the very first look at the mountain. After checking in with Patrol, Grooming, and Snowmaking, he writes up the snow report and contacts countless media outlets to update the public. Then it’s back to the hill to check out the trails and take photos to be posted on social media and the Hugh’s Views page of the Smuggs app. Whenever there is an event happening on-snow, you will hear Hugh on the microphone, that singular voice booming through the mountain air chronicling the performances of freeski competitors, parking lot revelers, and pond skimmers alike.

<div>In the summertime, Hugh is a busy timber framer. This summer however, he began to feel unwell, with severe pain and nausea which kept him from sleeping and caused him to lose weight at an alarming rate. After several weeks of this, Hugh was no longer able to work. He went to the emergency room on three separate occasions and was sent home with no diagnosis or suggestions for relief of his symptoms. He has since seen specialists and had numerous tests and imaging done, but no one can figure out why these symptoms are occurring.

<div>Meanwhile, as winter looms, Hugh’s wife Harley, the Director of Children’s Programs and Snow Sport University at Smugglers’, is facing her busiest time of year, during which she often works 10-hour days at the mountain. Their three school-aged kids do not drive (the oldest, who typically can drive, is recovering from knee surgery), and while they can generally ride the bus to school when it is available, they rely on friends and family to get them to and from sporting events, doctors’ appointments, and after-school activities as Hugh is not comfortable driving in his weakened and sleep-deprived state. To add to the immense stress of the situation, the family has been operating on a single income for several months, and this will continue for the foreseeable future.

<div>Our sweet, hilarious, creative, loving Ali was recently diagnosed with clear cell adenocarcinoma ovarian cancer— a very rare and unthinkable reality for our angel-girl. As she fights the most challenging climb of her life, we kindly ask for prayers and financial support from friends and family.

<div>Ali was admitted to Saint Mary’s on Tuesday, July 5 with excruciating abdominal pain. The medical team discovered blood clots throughout her body, including brain, heart, spleen and lungs; as well as a large mass on her ovary. After nearly 7 weeks in the hospital (both Saint Mary's and Northern Nevada Sierra Medical Center), 5 surgeries and many procedures, Ali has started the long road of chemotherapy.

<div>Her case is particularly sensitive, as her body is in a "hypercoagulative" state which means she is extremely high risk for movement or additional surgery. While doctors continue to pursue treatment and consider alternative therapies, we are praying over our beloved sister, daughter, mamma, wife and friend. We are also praying for her sweet husband, Stephen, and their gorgeous daughter, Elouise.

<div>In early October our brother Kevin was diagnosed with Stage IV metastatic Esophageal Cancer.  We have received an outpouring of support and requests to help Kevin and his family as they battle his diagnosis and treatment.  Kevin is currently undergoing aggressive chemotherapy and is unable to work. The cost of daily life with three children,  college tuition and medical bills unfortunately doesn’t  wait until treatment is done.

Maybe the hardest thing to tell the world but my buddy has passed. He was a friend, Dad, husband, and amazing human!! He was one of the kindest persons I've ever met. I pray for strength for his family. Anyone who knew David Behrbom knows what I'm talking about. Truly a "shirt off the back" type of guy. I love him and will miss him so much. All who knew and loved him can't even grieve properly. No real hugs. No coming within 6 feet of each other! This is just fokked!!<br /><br />I really don't want what we started to go in vain. There will be hospital bills and a family without a father and second income.<br /><br />We will be also trying to connect donors with other people with this horrible CoVid-19.<br /><br />I'm still going to fight. Hello everyone! In facebook world, we are all connected in a variety of ways.  For the past 25 years of my life, I have shaped my career around snowboard (and sometimes ski) instruction.  I began in 1994 working at Woodbury Ski area, moved up to Mohawk Mountain, traveled out west to Mount Hood, Colorado, Tahoe, and spent 20 years at Smugglers Notch teaching people of all ages how to be a snowboarder.<br /><br />Along the way I became affiliated with Professional Ski Instructors of America / American Association of Snowboard Instructors (PSIA/AASI).  In 1997 I earned level 1 certification and continued to grow from there to become fully certified, and now a member of the Eastern division's Educational Staff.  <br /><br />In April my journey continues. I will be trying out for the organization's National Team, in Breckenridge, CO.    The 2020 PSIA-AASI National Team Selection process helps PSIA-AASI select the nation’s best instructors to represent the association at the highest level.  This is an exciting opportunity that comes up every four years.<br /><br />This process is costly.  Between airfare to and from Denver, 10+ days of lodging, lift tickets, food, and incidentals, this process costs up to my goal amount.  Any support is appreciated.    <br /><br />I always try to be frugal, and if the goal amount is reached, or even exceeded, I will be travelling and staying in a no-frills manner.  Whatever of the donated amount that is left over will be donated to the Smugglers' Notch Special Olympics team.<br /><br />Please feel free to message me with any questions regarding the nature of this opportunity.  Smugglers' Notch friends &amp; co-workers, regardless of the outcome, I look forward to continuing to work with all of you for years to come.  Thanks so much!

2020 PSIA & AASI National Team Selection

Dear friends and family, as some of you know Kimi suffered a stroke on September 4th. After an emergency surgery to save her life she is now in recovery and rehab. Kimi Woolsey Road to Recovery

Greg Fatigate has been a part of the Smugglers' Family for 20 years. He has spent those years dedicated to connecting Smugglers' staff and guests to the mountains and providing the highest quality snow sport programming possible. Through the years, his hard work has continually resulted in achievement. He worked through the AASI program to achieve his Level 1, 2, and 3 certification, with Freestyle 1 &amp; 2 accreditations to go with it (not to mention a recent Level I PSIA cert!). As the certs have piled up so has his involvement and accolades as a leader of the Eastern AASI staff. Greg has risen through the ranks to join the education staff, the development team, and most recently the Eastern Team. He has also ascended within Smugglers’ becoming SSU’s training manager in 2011 and the leader of our staff development. It's with great pride that Smugglers' SSU is able to share his latest accomplishment. Here's a note from Greg:<br /><br /><strong>“It's official, I have been selected to try out for the AASI National team in mid-April at Breckenridge.  I am honored and excited for the opportunity, and very happy to go out representing Smugglers', which is essentially the place I have known as home.”</strong><br /><br />For those of you who are not familiar here is a brief description of the PSIA/AASI National Team:<br /><br />The PSIA-AASI Teams comprise 30 men and women selected from among the best instructors in the country. They represent the full breadth of the ski and snowboard disciplines--adaptive, alpine, alpine freestyle, cross country, telemark, and snowboard. Teams are formed every four years following a rigorous selection process. Once chosen, Team members are responsible for promoting, supporting, and assisting with the development of PSIA-AASI education programs and activities at all levels.
