I wanted to share an update about my parents. I have now applied for Medicaid for both Mom and Dad as I continue working to get them the care they need. They also have Medicare and secondary insurance, but unfortunately, those benefits do not cover all of the costs associated with long-term nursing care, assisted living, and the many expenses that come with this transition. We are still working through the Medicaid process, and there are expenses that have to be handled along the way. My goal remains the same: to get both of my parents into the appropriate level of care while doing everything possible to keep them close to one another. I am raising funds for my parents, who I have been living with and caring for as they’ve gotten older. For a long time, I used my income as a commercial truck driver to help cover the food, hygiene products, medications, and other basic necessities that their Social Security couldn’t fully cover. After a serious work-related truck accident, I was no longer able to continue the commercial trucking work I had done before the accident. Since then, I have gone through my savings doing everything I can to continue caring for my parents and making sure their needs are met. Now things have become even more urgent. My mom was recently discharged from rehab, but she was home for only one day before I had to call an ambulance, and she now needs long-term nursing care. My dad needs assisted living. They are married, and what matters most to me is keeping them together, or at least on the same campus, even though they now need different levels of care. This has been heartbreaking and overwhelming, but I am doing my best to help them make this transition safely and with dignity. Donations will help with my parents’ immediate needs and their transition into care, including medical, household, transportation, moving, and placement-related expenses. My goal is to make sure they have what they need during this transition and, most importantly, to do everything possible to keep them close to one another. Once my parents are safely placed, I will also need to find a new place to live as our household changes and begin figuring out the next chapter of my own life. Right now, however, my priority is making sure Mom and Dad receive the care they need without losing the closeness they have shared throughout their marriage.
