My family’s home in Petaluma, California, is more than just a house—it’s a living piece of history. Built by my 3rd Great Grandfather Silas Martin and his wife Nancy in 1860, the Octagon House has stood for over 166 years, sheltering seven generations of Martins. Its thick rammed earth walls, beautiful redwood details, and curved Victorian staircase have witnessed countless holidays, family gatherings, and the laughter of generations. Growing up, I watched people stop to admire and photograph our home, knowing it was a local landmark cherished by the community. Our family’s roots run deep in Sonoma County and California. Silas Martin served in the state legislature when the capital was in Benicia, and our ancestors helped establish the local Presbyterian church and contributed to the development of Petaluma, which was once more populated than San Francisco. The stories of our family—wagon trains, horticultural experiments with Luther Burbank, and even a steamboat adventure—are woven into the fabric of this town and state. Today, our beloved home needs urgent help. Our family has received a quote from the nationwide, foundation specialist company "Groundworks" in the amount of $250,000, for the foundation and footings that must be rebuilt to preserve its structure, and this is the first step in saving the house for future generations, with more restoration needed for the siding, walls, and interior. I’m reaching out to friends, family, and anyone who loves history and architecture. Your support will help ensure that the Octagon House continues to stand as a symbol of love, laughter, and community for another 166 years. Thank you for helping us keep this legacy alive.
