 Bellingham native Austin Hartman was seriously injured in the high-speed train collision near Madrid, Spain on October 28, 2026.
</div>
<div>
 <br>
</div>
<div>
 Austin is a 2024 graduate of Bellingham High School and a Junior at California Polytechnic State University, San Luis Obispo. He is a business major, and was studying abroad in Spain. The collision happened while Austin and <a href="https://www.sanluisobispo.com/latest-news/article317867519.html" target="_blank" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer">a fellow Cal Poly student</a> were taking a day trip to explore Seville.
</div>
<div>
 <br>
</div>
<div>
 Austin went from enthusiastically and joyfully living a dream abroad to being confined to a hospital bed and facing an extensive recovery.
</div>
<div>
 <br>
</div>
<div>
 The crash left Austin with severe traumatic injuries, including multiple fractures to his pelvis, hip, femur, humerus, ribs, and lumbar vertebrae, along with other significant orthopedic injuries and extensive lacerations to his face and body. Due to serious complications affecting his circulation and respiratory function, he required mechanical ventilation during the first 24 hours following the crash. He is also dealing with the psychological trauma of this terrifying experience.
</div>
<div>
 <br>
</div>
<div>
 At this time, Austin is not expected to return to the United States for at least two months, as he still requires multiple surgeries. There are still many unknowns ahead in his recovery.
</div>
<div>
 <br>
</div>
<div>
 Donations will help cover:
</div>
<div>
 <br>
</div>
<div>
 Medical care and treatment not covered by insurance
</div>
<div>
 Living expenses for Austin's family in Spain so they can remain near him during this critical time
</div>
<div>
 Long-term rehabilitation and physical therapy as Austin works to regain strength, mobility, and independence
</div>
<div>
 Mental health support
</div>
<div>
 <br>
</div>
<div>
 Austin's recovery will be a long journey, not something measured in days or weeks. Ongoing support, including recurring donations, can help his family manage the continuing medical, travel, living, rehabilitation, and mental health expenses in the months ahead. One-time donations are also deeply appreciated and will make an immediate difference. Please consider donating or sharing Austin's story to help ease the financial burden on his family so they can focus on his healing.

 Just weeks ago, Leah Silver-Fajardo was celebrating her 21st birthday in Italy, surrounded by her parents, sister, and new friends from her study-abroad program. It was October 7, and Leah was living the adventure she dreamed of studying in Florence, exploring Europe, experiencing new cultures, and making memories that would last a lifetime.
</div>
<div>
 <br>
</div>
<div>
 Now, instead of attending classes, exploring new cities, and enjoying life with her friends, Leah is lying in a hospital bed in Spain, recovering from devastating injuries sustained in a tragic train crash that claimed so many lives.
</div>
<div>
 <br>
</div>
<div>
 As Leah’s Tita Rachel, I'm reaching out on behalf of our family to ask for your support to help Leah navigate the unimaginable physical and emotional challenges ahead.
</div>
<div>
 <br>
</div>
<div>
 Originally from Seattle, Washington, Leah is a junior at California Polytechnic State University in San Luis Obispo, where she is majoring in neuropsychology. Fascinated by the human brain, she hopes to pursue work involving brain research, psychopharmacology, and behavioral health.
</div>
<div>
 <br>
</div>
<div>
 Leah loves being on the move and is an outstanding athlete, who loves to run, hike, travel and immerse herself in different cultures. Her first love is Soccer, but she loves trying new sports and has enjoyed playing ultimate Frisbee and flag football.
</div>
<div>
 <br>
</div>
<div>
 Her junior semester abroad in Florence was the perfect opportunity to combine her love of learning, travel, and adventure.
</div>
<div>
 <br>
</div>
<div>
 <strong>A Life Changed in an Instant</strong>
</div>
<div>
 <br>
</div>
<div>
 Like so many college students studying abroad, she was taking advantage of an extraordinary opportunity to experience the world.
</div>
<div>
 <br>
</div>
<div>
 That experience turned into a nightmare when Leah was caught in a horrific train accident in Spain.
</div>
<div>
 <br>
</div>
<div>
 Given the high number of casualties, we are all so grateful that Leah survived, but her injuries are extensive. She has suffered a broken knee, broken pelvis, multiple broken ribs, bruised lungs, scrapes and burns across her body.
</div>
<div>
 <br>
</div>
<div>
 Leah has already undergone surgery on her knee and will be soon enduring another surgery to repair her pelvis. Although she has thankfully been moved out of intensive care, she remains hospitalized in Spain, facing a lengthy hospital stay and extensive long-term rehabilitation.
</div>
<div>
 <br>
</div>
<div>
 For our active young Leah, who loves running, hiking, soccer, and being active, the physical road ahead will be especially challenging.
</div>
<div>
 <br>
</div>
<div>
 We all know physical injuries are only part of her story as Leah will also need time and support to heal from the emotional trauma of this horrific crash and the terrifying experience of escaping the train.
</div>
<div>
 <br>
</div>
<div>
 <strong>Leah's Family Dropped Everything to Be by Her Side</strong>
</div>
<div>
 <br>
</div>
<div>
 In the chaotic aftermath of the accident, Leah's parents, Nicole and Sergio, endured something no parent should ever have to experience. The embassy reached out to let them know Leah was in a train crash, and for a period of time, they didn’t if she had survived or know where she had been taken. Leah's friends from her program went from hospital to hospital searching for her until they finally found her and notified Leah’s parents.
</div>
<div>
 <br>
</div>
<div>
 Since then, Leah's parents and her sister Hannah have arrived in Spain to be by her side.
</div>
<div>
 <br>
</div>
<div>
 Both of her parents have left their jobs and daily responsibilities behind, while her sister Hannah stepped away from her final year of law school. Right now, their only priority is Leah.
</div>
<div>
 <br>
</div>
<div>
 The past several days have been a blur of travel, hospitals, medical decisions, and trying to understand what comes next. And while the family is grateful beyond words that Leah survived, they are only beginning to comprehend how long and difficult her recovery will be.
</div>
<div>
 <br>
</div>
<div>
 <strong>How You Can Help Leah and Her Family</strong>
</div>
<div>
 <br>
</div>
<div>
 We are incredibly grateful that Leah's study-abroad program is helping cover many of her immediate medical expenses and will cover her transportation back to the United States when she is medically able to travel.
</div>
<div>
 <br>
</div>
<div>
 But there are still significant expenses ahead, and many unknowns.
</div>
<div>
 <br>
</div>
<div>
 Your donations will help cover:
</div>
<div>
 <br>
</div>
<div>
 * Medical care and treatment not covered by insurance, her study-abroad program, or other sources.
</div>
<div>
 * Living expenses for Leah's family in Spain, allowing her parents and sister to remain by her side during this critical time.
</div>
<div>
 * Long-term rehabilitation and physical therapy as Leah works to regain her strength, mobility, and independence.
</div>
<div>
 <br>
</div>
<div>
 We don't yet know the full extent of Leah's future medical and rehabilitation needs. What we do know is that her recovery will not be measured in days or weeks. It will be a long journey, and we want her and her family to be able to focus on healing rather than the mounting financial uncertainty.
</div>
<div>
 <br>
</div>
<div>
 <strong>Help Us Give Leah the Chance to Heal</strong>
</div>
<div>
 <br>
</div>
<div>
 Leah has already survived something unimaginable. Now she faces the difficult work of recovery, physically and emotionally.
</div>
<div>
 We cannot undo what happened to her. But together, we can help ease the burden on her family and make sure Leah has the support she needs for the road ahead.
</div>
<div>
 <br>
</div>
<div>
 No donation is too small. Every contribution will help, and if you're unable to give, sharing Leah's story is another meaningful way to support her.
</div>
<div>
 <br>
</div>
<div>
 On behalf of Leah, Nicole, Sergio, Hannah and our entire family, thank you for your generosity, compassion, prayers, and encouragement.
</div>
<div>
 <br>
</div>
<div>
 We are profoundly grateful that Leah is still with us. Now we want to help her reclaim the future that was so suddenly interrupted.
</div>
<div>
 <br>
</div>
<div>
 With love and gratitude,
</div>
<div>
 <br>
</div>

Help Leah Silver-Fajardo Heal After Train Crash near Madrid

My name is Julie Lafferty and I am starting this GoFundMe for Mackenzie Dykstra, the daughter of my dear friend Christine Kelso, and their family. Earlier this month Mackenzie was diagnosed with a Grade 4 Glioma Brain Tumor. On Wednesday, June 21st, she underwent a 10 hour surgery at Lucille Packard Medical Center in Stanford to remove as much of the tumor as possible. Now the real work begins. In two weeks Mackenzie will begin a six week, five days a week course of chemotherapy and radiation treatments at Stanford. Mackenzie attends Carmel High School, she loves to play volleyball and is an excellent student. She is ready for this battle - she walked out of the hospital 72 hours after a 10 hour brain surgery. We are all amazed at her strength and fortitude. Christine has continued to work and service her clients at Chicago Title Company during this stressful time. I am so proud to be her co-worker and friend. The money raised here will go to help the family with medical expenses and travel costs, and will hopefully take some of the financial stress off their plate. Every donation is appreciated and will allow them to focus on helping and healing Mackenzie. Please keep Mackenzie, Christine and their family in your prayers.

Help Mackenzie in her fight

In 1983, Marlena escaped Communism of her home country Poland for the Freedoms and individual rights of These United States of America. She became a citizen in 1992 and decided to open her business, nestled in Holland, Michigan "Marlena's Bistro and Pizzeria."<br /><br />Marlena is the pure definition of the American Dream and she exudes that everyday, grateful to be part of a country that upholds individual liberty and freedoms over totalitarianism and authoritarianism. Free from a Communist country her and her business thrived!<br /><br />Then came 2020, Unconstitutional lockdowns from Michigan's Governor Whitmer and her draconian lackeys at the Michigan Department of Health and Human Services. Together, with no data presented, in defiance of the Constitution and the oath they took to uphold it, they shut down ALL restaurants. <br /><br />Marlena had seen these edicts before and refused to lose everything she worked her entire life for only to live in a country that started to look like Communist Poland. She would remain open in defiance of tyranny and well within her protected Constitutional rights. But the government had other plans. <br /><br />Like most authoritarian governments, the Health Department tried to shut her down with fines and fees. When she stood her ground, they revoked her license to operate a restaurant. Marlena is would not be deterred and like the Founding Fathers before her, refused to comply: She would continue to serve the patriots of her community. <br /><br />This last week, in a court ordered Zoom appearance, without Constitutionally protected representation, the judge levied a fine and ordered an arrest warrant for Marlena. Finally, under tremendous stress and pressure, Marlena did what she knew was right: She continued to serve her community even under the possibility of arrest. <br /><br />Now, she needs our help. Marlena has given me the blessing to help run this fundraiser for her as we met this week to go over this plan. The funds will be distributed to her and her restaurant to help offset the cost of running the business during this pandemic! Please Donate and Share this GoFundMe Page set up to help offset the mounting legal fees Marlena continues to incur daily, and to send a message to wanna be dictators everywhere: America is the Land of the Free and the Home of the Brave, and together with like-minded Patriots like YOU, we can overcome and beat back Socialism! Be like Marlena. Be an AMERICAN PATRIOT! Donate TODAY!

Dearest Friends and Community Members,<br /><br />As many of you probably have heard, Brett Ledbetter (loving and amazing husband and father) lost his battle with colon cancer earlier this week.  This extremely shocking and sad news, coupled with the loss of his wonderful wife Becca to cancer just this past October, can only be described as devastating.  <br /><br />Probably the most difficult part of this terrible ordeal is that Diesel (7th grade) and Alabama (10th grade) have lost both of their loving parents within just months.  This is a tragedy that no child should ever have to experience. Luckily, both Bama and Diesel are part of a loving and close extended family. Both kids will be cared for and looked after by a close knit community of family and friends, including their Aunt Kaja and Uncle Dave (who are in the process of becoming their legal guardians) and are dedicated to ensuring both children are in a safe and loving environment and remain in the Carmel community. Grandma Deb will also be an intricate part of their lives, providing all the love and support her grandchildren need.<br /><br />Please help out these wonderful kids with a monetary donation of any size.  All funds graciously donated will go toward current everyday life expenses for the kids (i.e. sports, dance, clothes, etc.) in addition to any money needed for the Bama and Diesel in the future.  <br /><br />The Carmel community, friends outside the community and even people who have never even met this loving family came  together to raise money for both Becca and Brett as they battled cancer. The family is extremely appreciate of  all the support over these last several months.  Please also consider donating once more to help these two beautiful children as they deal with the heartbreaking loss of both parents.<br /><br />More importantly, please help honor the memory of Brett and Becca, who have touched so many of our lives, by ensuring that Bama and Diesel are not only provided for, but also feel our love and support every day. We know they will feel your prayers, love, strength and comfort no matter how far away you are.

Please Help Diesel and Bama

The Granat family has been fighting a private battle for over a year and a half.  Both the father and mother of the family were diagnosed with cancer at the same time.  Fortunately Adriana is in remission, but Artur continues his battle with the most aggressive Stage 4 Prostate Cancer. Through out this time they were battling privately and on their own.  We are now reaching out to our community for help.  They have been through a rollercoaster of emotions, treatments/hospital stays, and financial hardships.  Artur Granat is a loving husband and father of three.  He  desperately wants to beat this and get back to doing all the things he loves.  Their medical bills continue to mount and they need our help.  This family has given so much to our community and it is now their turn to be supported.  Please help if you can. Any amount can make a difference. <br /><br /><img src="https://d2g8igdw686xgo.cloudfront.net/36599866_1548783339184930_r.jpeg" width="100%" media_type="3" alt="36599866_1548783339184930_r.jpeg" />To quote Artur, “A drowning man will grab for a lifejacket, I will grab for all the tools I can just to have more time.  I am a fighter.”

In Loving of Memory of Brendan DeSousa

All, I would like to express my appreciation for your donations to my recuperation from surgery and chemotherapy, as I journey through my “cancer experience.” These funds will go toward meals for my family and in-home care for me, including household management and driving the kids around. Your support is making a big difference in my path toward health. By the way, I’ve not put a goal on this page (although it may auto fill). I appreciate any and all support. Blessings to you and your family. Heather Hubanks

Healing from Stage IV Cancer

This contribution page has been setup with long term goals in mind to help provide necessities for the Huntington children as they navigate through this time of confusion, heartache and uncertainty. It takes a village to help raise a child and when a child loses a parent/provider it is our responsibility as a community to step up and help in whatever way we can. These innocent children have a long road of healing ahead of them and it is my hope that we can come together and show them what a supportive community really looks like. Please consider donating, even if it is one dollar, to help them in their time of need.
