My husband has been a car mechanic his entire life, always working hard to provide for us. A few years ago, everything changed when he was in a terrible car accident. He spent months in the trauma center at Regional One in Memphis, fighting to recover from a broken pelvis, back, arm, ribs, and a traumatic brain injury. When he finally came home, he needed constant care and physical therapy, and I became his full-time caregiver. The accident left him with severe short-term memory loss, and just as we were adjusting to this new reality, he suffered a heart attack. After surgery, he was diagnosed with hepatitis C, and last March, we learned he has lung nodules that turned out to be lung cancer. To make things even harder, he now has cataracts in both eyes, and his right eye is almost completely blind. He desperately needs surgery, but we have no insurance and no way to pay for the care he needs. Because of all these challenges, we lost our home and have been sleeping in our car for a while now. We have no family who can help us, and we are down to just the clothes on our backs and our old car. The money we raise will go directly toward two eye surgeries, medical care for his lung cancer, and hopefully enough to help us find a safe place to live.
