Welcome introduction about Sharon
Page created for Sharon. At this current time, it will be run by her family with posts and updates as we have information to share.
As many know by now, our dear sister, Sharon, was in a tragic car accident on Thursday, January 22. She was heading to Seward for a doctor's appointment, lost control of her car, went into a ditch, and rolled.
Her cell phone called 911, and the Dwight rescue squad was at the scene within minutes.
Sharon was alert and able to share with them what happened and where she was hurting.
The squad took her to the Seward hospital. After their evaluation, they made a decision to life flight her to Bryan West Hospital in Lincoln.
Sharon sustained several injuries, including fractures to her face and jaw, a broken rib, and damage to her spine.
Throughout the whole day, she remained alert and able to communicate (except when they sedated her for the flight to Lincoln).
Sharon is known by many as the secretary for the Dwight Assumption Parish.
She is also known for her kind, warm, and generous heart and, more importantly, as a woman with a strong Catholic faith.
Intensive Care Unit
She has been awake and responsive, intubated only in preparation for surgery, but breathing on her own and able to communicate by writing.
It is truly a miracle and blessing that Sharon has been cleared of any concussion, head trauma, or internal bleeding, especially given the nature of the accident.
Sharon did, however, sustain critical injuries, including fractures to her face, ribs, and spine. She has fractures at the C1–C2 level at the base of her neck, which doctors expect to heal with time and the support of a cervical collar, along with her facial fractures.
More significantly, Sharon suffered a fracture to her T4 vertebra. Due to compression on her spinal cord, she currently has no sensation from about the mid-back/chest area down.
On January 24, Sharon underwent back surgery performed by Neurosurgeon Dr. Steven L. Gogela, M.D.
The procedure involved stabilizing the injured area with pins and rods from T2 to T6. We are incredibly thankful that Sharon came through surgery without any complications. She continues to breathe on her own, and plans are in place to remove the intubation tube soon.
At this time, her spine has been surgically stabilized. However, Sharon did not pass the EMG testing for nerve reactivity, meaning there is currently no response indicating sensation or movement in her legs. While the injury has been repaired surgically and healing will take time, there is a possibility that she may never walk again. That said, it is still early, and with spinal injuries, outcomes can change. There is hope that some sensation may return, but it will require patience, perseverance, and extensive rehabilitation.
Sharon faces a long road ahead, including months of therapy. Madonna Rehabilitation is expected to be the next step in her recovery journey. The days ahead will be challenging, but Sharon has already shown incredible strength, and her survival and current condition are nothing short of miraculous.
Please pray for:
• Healing and restoration for Sharon
• Strength, peace, and comfort for her and her family
• Wisdom and skill for her medical and care teams
• Hope and perseverance in the days ahead
Sharon is already a miracle, and we place her in God’s loving hands, trusting in His presence and grace throughout her recovery.
Sharon is in room A30 if you want to visit or send her a letter.
