- My dad, Carl, will soon be undergoing surgery to remove a vestibular schwannoma—a benign tumor growing on the balance and hearing nerve. Because of its size, surgery is the recommended and safest option. It’s large enough that it can’t be managed with observation or radiation alone, and removing it is essential to protect his long-term health, balance, and neurological function. Anyone who knows my dad knows he’s steady, private, and the kind of person who takes care of everyone else first. Asking for help is not something he would ever do for himself, which is why I’m doing it for him. Even with insurance, the financial impact of this surgery is significant. There are deductibles and out-of-pocket costs, plus travel and lodging for the procedure and follow-up appointments. And the recovery process is extensive. He will lose all hearing in his left ear. Because this tumor affects the balance nerve, he’ll need vestibular rehabilitation afterward—specialized physical therapy that helps the brain relearn balance, coordination, and spatial orientation. It’s a critical part of getting him back to steady footing. There’s also the reality that my mom will need to take unpaid time off from work during the first week after surgery to support him through the immediate recovery period. That lost income adds another layer to the financial strain. This fundraiser is meant to help cover these unavoidable medical, travel, rehab, and recovery-related expenses so my dad can focus on healing instead of worrying about finances. Every contribution goes directly toward his care and the practical needs that come with a surgery of this scale. And if you’re not able to give, your support, prayers, and encouragement mean just as much to our family. Thank you for taking the time to read this and for standing with my dad during a challenging moment. It truly makes a difference.
