<div>Huachuma Collective is a Peru-based nonprofit association which cares for the bio-cultural sustainability of the San Pedro Cactus. Our leadership is an alliance of curanderos, curanderas, Indigenous leaders, and Andean community members. Together, we empower communities to protect, conserve, and plant Huachuma and explore sustainable practices for growing and working with traditional medicine in Peru. Our projects support and revitalize cultural traditions in Andean and Coastal Peruvian communities.

<div>Our organization was founded in 2020 to unite and provide a platform for the voices of traditional curanderos and curanderas in North and Central Peru. The collective convened to address growing concerns with Huachuma's conservation status and the loss of traditional medicinal knowledge in North Peru. The knowledge and practices of San Pedro were <a href="https://www.elperuano.pe/noticia/197142-declaran-patrimonio-cultural-de-la-nacion-a-los-conocimientos-saberes-y-usos-del-cactus-san-pedro" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">declared Cultural Heritage of Peru in November 202</a>2, an important step towards recognizing the unique cultural world of this medicine and the skill of practitioners. Huachuma Collective takes this a step further by working at the community level to ensure the survival of Huachuma and the healing arts of North Peru.

<div><strong>We are raising funds for our three active projects:</strong>

<div><strong>1. NURSERY</strong>

<div>In collaboration with Andean communities, we have built a wild seed bank of 500,000 San Pedro seeds from 50+ different wild populations in Peru. Seed-starting is essential to protecting the genetic diversity of these plants.
</div>

</div>
<div>Our founders have been growing Huachuma onsite at our headquarters in Chaclacayo, Peru since 1999 - a project which has resulted in 6,000+ heads of mature, sustainable Huachuma. Now we have added a new nursery, which exists to germinate seeds from many regions and raise them for three years before returning the seedlings to their Andean communities of origin. Our directors held a blessing ceremony and inaugural <em>pago </em>offering on October 30, 2023.

<div><strong>2. CULTURAL EVENTS</strong>

<div>Since September 2023, Huachuma Collective has hosted monthly events with Andean and Coastal communities of North Peru. These are directed by local healers, and provide opportunities for kids, young adults, and elders to connect around their shared cultural heritage.

<div>Each event includes a community conversation, lunch, an offering to the local pre-hispanic temple, a planting of San Pedro cuttings, and a community Huachuma ceremony.
</div>

Support San Pedro Cactus Conservation in Peru

Blade Marshall, my son, recently experienced a heartbreaking loss when his bike was stolen while he was out grocery shopping. This bike wasn’t just a possession—it was something Blade worked incredibly hard to earn, and it served as his main source of transportation. The theft has left him devastated, and it’s been difficult to see him struggle without the independence and freedom his bike provided.

 The funds raised through this campaign will go directly toward replacing Blade’s bike, as well as covering the cost of a secure bike lock, air tags for tracking, and registration with the police. These steps are absolutely necessary due to the high volume of bike theft in Chico, CA, and will help ensure Blade’s new bike is protected. Additionally, Blade had made special modifications to his bike to help him do stunts and bike dancing, which brought him a lot of joy and self-expression. Your support will help restore not just his mobility, but also his ability to pursue his passion.

He was a loving husband, a devoted father, and a tireless supporter of our local schools and families. Genaro poured his heart into raising his children. His kids were his world, and everything he did—at home, in the schools, and in the community—was for them.

For over 10 years, he served as President of the Parent Teacher Organization, was a respected member of the School Board, and was involved in nearly every school leadership team and event you can think of. He gave endlessly of his time and energy—not for recognition, but because he genuinely cared.

<div>To know him was to know generosity, strength, and quiet leadership. Genaro’s sudden passing has left an enormous void in our hearts and in the lives of his wife and children. In Loving Memory of Genaro Reyes

My brother, Rusty McCart, got the news alone. A Cscan for one problem revealed the ugly truth, what was hiding... CANCER had invaded his body.  Left undetected, with no symptoms it grew, it spread, it was in charge....but not for long. It took a few weeks for him to find the words to tell us, his family. His diagnosis started with stage 4 kidney cancer. His positive attitude, his comforting hug and his iron will and determination quickly guided us, his siblings to circle the wagons and prepare for battle. My sister Dana Freeman moved Rusty into her home. Our mom had moved in with her years ago. I soon followed, putting everything and everyone on hold. My other brother Jeff McCart comes daily to help and is a phone call away.This fight we will fight together. Rusty's first surgery is Mon. April 22. His birthday is the 23...ironic.. My sister is the only one bringing in a paycheck because my time is spent pushing for answers, a plan and action. I have no problem starting fires when needed. With the help of friends, family and people we have never met, there is no challenge to hard and no effort wasted. There will be no regret for things we should have done.....it is full court press 24/7. Whatever the outcome, Rusty has already beat cancer because it cannot beat him. It will never take away hope or his smile...never. To be continued.........as our hospital says, " Cancer will stop before we do".

When the diagnosis is CANCER.. Cry..Breathe..FIGHT

Our friends Paul and Lauren Do have gracefully and quietly walked through almost four years of infertility treatment. After two failed IVF cycles, a heart breaking miscarriage, and 3 failed IUIs, they are poised to try a third IVF, with a new clinic, Northwestern, and a new plan in late March of this year. We have hoped and prayed with them with each attempt and cried and encouraged after each disappointment and loss. Since celebrating their marriage with them, we have been waiting for the news that we could throw a baby shower for Baby Do. This isn't in the cards yet; but, with a $25,000 price tag on this next round of IVF, that will largely be out of pocket because of Lauren reaching her lifetime insurance benefits for infertility treatment and portions of the recommendations not being covered by insurance, what they most need is a "Maybe Baby (IVF) shower". To that end, we are setting up this goFundme site. I know Paul and Lauren will be appreciative of all support whether financial or emotional. Paul and Lauren's full story follows.<br /><br />The Steinhofers<br /><br /><br /><strong>PAUL AND LAUREN'S INFERTILITY JOURNEY</strong><br /><br /><strong>Paul and I would like to share our family story with you. Paul and I were married on a lovely July day in 2011. I was 37 years old at the time, and Paul and I both knew we wanted to immediately begin building a family. Like most women interested in having children, I daydreamed about names and nurseries never imagining that I would have trouble . However, after six months and many negative pregnancy test kits, I made an appointment with my doctor to discuss our future. After tests and procedures, I was diagnosed with uterine fibroids. That diagnosis coupled with my age led to a recommendation by my doctor to try IVF. </strong><br /><br /><strong>We were hopeful that after the fibroids were removed, we would have a successful IVF in September 2012; however, we had to cancel the cycle because of early ovulation. This was an indication that I had a diminished ovarian reserve. I learned that 1 in 8 women will face an infertility diagnosis. The reality that I was the 1 in the 1 in 8 began to sink in. Finally, in November 2012, we completed our first attempt at IVF. Unfortunately,it was unsuccessful. A couple months later in January 2013, I had to have another hysteroscopy/laparoscopy to check for more fibroids and have scar tissue removed.</strong><br /><br /><strong>After the remaining fibroids were removed, we began prepping for another IVF cycle. However, before the cycle was set to begin, I found out that I was pregnant in May 2013. Our joy quickly turned to heartbreak when I miscarried at 6 weeks. The summer following the miscarriage was rough. I had two more hysteaoscopies to remove fibroids. We were scheduled to begin another cycle of IVF in September 2013, but like the year before, we had to cancel the cycle because of early ovulation.</strong><br /><br /><strong>Finally, in November 2013, still hopeful, we started our second IVF cycle. We were able to produce one viable embryo; however, the cycle was ultimately unsuccessful. After hearing the devastating news, I was confused and conflicted . Not only had our second attempt at IVF failed, but our insurance benefits for IVF had also expired. I was faced with a harsh reality: our only chance at conceiving was through IUI, a procedure with much less success than IVF. Undaunted, we tried IUI twice but were unsuccessful. In March of 2014, I had my fifth hysteroscopy/laparoscopy to check my uterine cavity and fallopian tubes. Afterward, we were green lit for another round of IUI.</strong><br /><br /><strong>However, in April 2014, our third attempt at IUI failed. We were losing confidence in the clinic that had been servicing us and decided to take our fertility needs to Northwestern Hospital. After consulting the doctors at Northwestern, we have a new course of action in place.</strong><br /><br /><strong>We have the utmost confidence in the doctors and nurses at Northwestern, and believe that their new recommendations will help us succeed with our third IVF in late March of this year. However, because I have reached my lifetime insurance benefits limit allowed for infertility treatments, our procedures in March and April are not covered by insurance. Thus, we are asking for any support you may be able to provide to help us start our loving family. Your generosity will not be taken lightly and we will be forever grateful.
