<div>On April 26, a tragic event unfolded in the Vancouver Lapu Lapu Block Party that left several families deeply affected. Lives were lost, others are fighting to recover, and many are now facing heavy medical, funeral, and living/food expenses.

<div>This fundraiser is organized by Phil Chou, Jessica Cheng, Zharina Pelea, Jared Root-McCaig, Brandon Blue, and Rosalyn Hogg who love this city. We are working together to support the victims and families directly after the heartbreaking tragedy at the Lapu Lapu Festival. But it’s not about us — it’s about standing with the victims and families who need support now more than ever.

Support for Lapu Lapu Victims and Families

<div>Over the past year Lee has endured several unimaginable medical issues. In January 2024, he suffered a badly broken leg, requiring back to back surgeries to repair the fracture. In March 2024, he was diagnosed with a benign brain tumor that required invasive surgery to remove.
</div>

<div>Then this January, Lee and his family received the devastating and terminal diagnosis of Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis (ALS) aka Lou Gehrig’s Disease.
</div>
<div> 
</div>
<div>ALS is a progressive neurodegenerative disease causing muscle weakness, paralysis, and eventual respiratory system failure. Despite being known for over a century, it remains severely underfunded, and approved treatments only slow progression and extend survival by a few months.  
</div>
<div> 
</div>
<div>Although ALS has no known cure, the last few years have brought significant growth in research on ALS, including its underlying mechanisms and potential early-stage therapies. Sadly, the disease remains terminal, typically within 2-4 years after the onset of symptoms and diagnosis.
</div>
<div> 
</div>
<div>Lee has dedicated his life to serving his country and his community. He spent 14 years in the Canadian Armed Forces, 5 years as a BC Sheriff, and the past 18 years with the Vancouver Police Department. While facing his deadly diagnosis, he still maintains a positive attitude and plans to continue to work every day and be with his team. In addition to being a loving father, son, and brother, Lee is also a dear friend to so many of us.

<div>Everyone that knows Lee knows he’s a quiet guy that never asks for anything. An avid cyclist and athlete, he has devoted so much of his spare time to riding in 6 Cops for Cancer rides, helping raise millions for pediatric cancer research and programs.

<div>Lee would never ask, but he needs our help to fight ALS. The money donated will assist with medical expenses not covered by MSP and extended benefits, and allow for potential experimental therapies/medical trials, assist with potential renovations for home that may be required as the disease progresses and fund memorable experiences for Lee and his family. A portion of every donation will go to the ALS Society of BC.

<div>On Friday March 8th, 2024, we lost our beloved friend and family member, Sarah ‘Pops’ Popil.

<div>Sarah was larger than life. She was beautiful, vibrant, energetic and profoundly charismatic. She was an incredible athlete who loved snowboarding, playing softball, volleyball, soccer and golfing… You name it, she played it. And damn if she didn’t excel at everything she did. She lived her life in technicolour and everything she touched turned to gold.

<div>Those close to Sarah know she also had a quiet side; a love of the simple pleasures in life, hiking with her pups, swimming blue lakes, fishing, boating and playing outdoors, and spending quality time with the many friends she gathered and maintained over the years.

<div>On her days off, Sarah could be found listening to the same 20 country songs in her beloved truck, shooting pool with pals while sipping Caesars or watching the San Jose Sharks lose to every other team in the NHL.

<div>Sarah loved fiercely, was a committed and generous friend and family member, and wore her old country soul like a badge of honour. She touched many lives along her path and left us far too soon.

<div>Sarah was a dedicated and respected member of the Vancouver Police Department with an outstanding list of accomplishments in her career.
</div>

<div>She proudly hailed from Prince Albert, Saskatchewan, the descendent of Ukrainian and Montreal Lake Cree ancestors.

<div>Sarah’s primary concern in the event of her passing was always that her dad be taken care of. We have set up this GFM to fulfill her wishes; to help cover the cost and administration of Sarah’s estate, and to allow Cecil to have access to the funds he needs to be supported as he navigates this heart breaking time.

<div>Those who know Warren, understand the happiness that he brings to people's lives. He is a loving and supportive husband, father, brother, uncle, and loyal friend. Warren’s strong work ethic, compassion, genuine love for others, and positive attitude are just some of the many attributes that have made him a truly great police officer. Those who know Warren as a police officer in the Abbotsford Police Department, know a gentle giant who repeatedly has made a huge impact in his community. Warren is a police officer that goes the extra mile to not only protect victims and his community, but to also bring a measure of justice and peace, even when it costs him. Warren has dedicated 10 years to serving his community, and today we ask you to help support him as he and his family battle for his life.

<div>In 2017, Warren’s wife Jen was hospitalized with Hepatic Portal Vein Thrombosis (blood clots) caused by Myeloproliferative Neoplasm (MPN) blood cancer. Since this diagnosis, Jen has been on chemotherapy and blood thinners ever since. Jen, who was also serving her community as an Abbotsford Police Department civilian member, is no longer able to continue working due to the side effects of the chemo and has had to undergo several surgeries to remove variously located tumors over the years since. Jen is still battling this blood cancer today.

<div>In August of 2022, Warren was diagnosed with Invasive Melanoma. He immediately underwent surgery to remove 16 lymph nodes and underwent chemotherapy. Unfortunately, in November of 2023 Warren learned that the cancer had returned and was diagnosed with Stage Four cancer and told without treatment he would have six months to live. The cancer returned all over his body, including his shoulder, ribs, liver, hip, and leg.

<div>Warren is currently in the thick of it, undergoing aggressive immunotherapy treatments, and multiple rounds of radiation. Due to these treatments, Warren has developed immunotherapy induced colitis and is now hospitalized (The Maarhuis family had to celebrate this last Christmas and New Years in the hospital).
</div>

</div>
<div>Those who are blessed enough to have met the Maarhuis family, know them as a loving, loyal, and passionate bunch. The family has had its share of adversity over the last few years, and now with a recent cancer diagnosis for Warren on top of Jen’s already existing battle with cancer, we are asking for your help to lift the financial strain of that battle.
</div>

<div>This life-altering diagnosis has been extremely difficult for the entire Maarhuis Family. His wife Jen, who is still in a battle of her own with cancer, and his two amazingly strong kids, Hailey (12) and Charlotte (10), are doing all they can to support one another.

<div>With the strong community of friends and family behind Warren’s family, our goal is to help alleviate some of the financial strain for the family in order for them to focus on Warren’s treatments and the healing of his body, as well as to help in the pursuit of experimental treatments.

<div>Warren and Jen’s battles with cancer may be just beginning, and each day brings a different challenge such as spending this Christmas and New Years in the hospital, but the love and support they have and are receiving from those around them truly keeps them going.
