<div>Over the last four years, I've had the great pleasure of knowing Don Luis and his family, including his daughter through offering retreats at Chakra, a beautiful eco-lodge at the foothills of Chirripó National Park in rural Costa Rica.

<div>For those of you who have been to Chakra, you'll likely remember Don Luis, the caretaker of the land, with his quiet presence, generosity, and deep connection to this place. You may also remember Roxana, his daughter, who cooked for us with so much love during our retreats. They're truly the heart and soul of Chakra.

<div>They are the stewards of the land. The caretakers. The ones who have helped keep Chakra alive over the years so that people from all over the world could come to this sacred place and have life-changing experiences.

<div>And now, this family is going through an incredibly difficult time. Don Luis is currently very ill with stage 4 cancer. His wife is at home and unable to walk after two knee surgeries that did not heal properly. And now Roxana has just been diagnosed with advanced breast cancer, which means she is no longer able to work while she goes through chemotherapy, surgery, and then more treatment afterward.

<div>This is a small rural Costa Rican family with no pension, no insurance, and no clear timeline for when Roxana may be able to return to work. In the meantime, the basic cost of living continues, and groceries alone in Costa Rica are now on par with North America.

<div>This family has spent years caring for the land and serving others. They have helped create the conditions for so many people to come to Chakra, rest, heal, transform, reconnect, and be nourished.

<div>Hi, my name is Liana. On November 24th while I was at work, I got a call that changed my life forever. Adrian told me the house was on fire and that it was really bad and I should come home. I dropped everything and ran. I didn’t even think — the only thing in my head was my mouse, Chris Brown, alone in my room with no way out.

<div>By the time I got there, the entire street was filled with smoke. I couldn’t get inside. I stood there sobbing, shaking, terrified, begging the firefighters to please try to save him. He was in my burning room for over an hour. ( the wall behind him completely burned and so did the dresser under him) When they finally came out holding his tiny, soot-covered body, I broke down. He survived — scared, shaking, but alive — and he’s all I have left.

<div>My name is Arnaldo Padilla-Molina, I came to the U.S from San Juan de Los Lagos, Jalisco around 1993. I was always healthy in my teens and early 20s, however, in 2003 I was diagnose with cancer and testing further showed I had a tumor that was spread all throughout my right kidney. This resulted in having to undergo surgery to remove my right kidney. I was able to live comfortably with only one kidney and was able to provide finically for my family during this time. But in 2019, my health began to deteriorate and in November 2020 I began dialysis. Having to forgo dialysis during a pandemic was extremely hard, however with the support and love from my family I was able to continue moving forward. In 2024, doctors unfortunately discovered another tumor. Thankfully, it was small and was successfully removed through surgery. However, because of the cancer diagnosis, I was removed from the kidney transplant list and can only be relisted after being cancer-free for at least two years. Despite my best efforts, my overall health has continued to decline, and I eventually had to stop working. My biggest expense right now, after my medical bills, is my mortgage, and after using all my savings, I’ve fallen three months behind on payments and am struggling to keep up.

Help Arnaldo Overcome Financial and Health Struggles

<div>On 8/24, Alli and <strong>Firnie (Firnspiegel - her sweet pup)</strong>  were trail running near Washington Pass.  While running, Firnie disappeared, and Alli searched for her for over 6 hours.  Alli found her down a steep rocky slope below the trail they’d been on, silent and not moving. With the help of climbers, they extracted Firnie and drove back to Bend to the Emergency Vet.

<div>At the Emergency Vet, they evaluated her and determined she sustained trauma to her right forelimb (carpus) and left hind limb (stifle = knee) as well as minor superficial abrasions and excoriations, which were clipped and cleaned. Additionally, she had mild pneumothorax (air in her chest) and suspected pulmonary contusions (bruising on her lungs).

<div>The vet put splints on the right carpus and left hind limb, which can be considered with weekly bandage changes for 6-8 weeks while processing and considering options and if surgery is feasible.
</div>

<div>Although it had been extremely stressful, Firnie's prognosis was good, and everyone breathed a sigh of relief.
</div>
<div><br />
</div>
<div>However, after going to the family vet yesterday, <strong>Firnie is not tolerating the splint well on the back leg and needs emergency surgery ASAP for both legs.</strong> Alli was given the impossible decision of trying to afford the surgery or euthanize her sweet baby. Although surgery will be complicated and the next 6-8 months will be extremely challenging, the expectation is that Firnie could live with minimal pain and a full but different life.

Help Bring Home Nexan Who Was Falsely Detained By ICE

<div>On June 6, 2025, my father Gregorio M. was taken away from my family along with 2 of my uncles while working at Ambiance Apparel. It is truly heartbreaking to have the same imagine engraved in my head playing over and over. Him getting chained up like if he was a criminal and it’s been the most traumatizing situation to have witnessed. Even with so many emotions and thoughts crossing his mind as he was being chained and cuffed he held his head high assuring me that it would all be okay. He begged me to remain calm as he watched how our world broke apart. I know no one can see my father the way my family portrays him but this scenario and how he handled it speaks volume. He did not run, he did not cry, he did not resist. He got up like every other day to work and provide for his family like he has been doing it since he was 13 years old. He never got to experience what being a child was like but maybe that’s what prepared him to be the amazing father he is. His patience, kindness, strength and memories is all I am left with. Never did I think this day would come.

HELP KEEP OUR FAMILY TOGETHER

<div>My name is Kerri Dumin Noble and I am starting this fundraiser on behalf of my brother, Mike Dumin and his fiancé, Megan Stacey. Their dog, Olive, suffered from a herniated disc on February 21, 2025 which impacted her spinal cord causing paralysis in her hind legs.

<div>Olive is a 6 year old Cocker Spaniel mix that Mike and Megan rescued in 2020. She quickly became their best friend and a very loved member of our family. She's very smart, full of personality, and a huge love bug. She also has the softest fur that I have ever experienced a dog having (and I've got two of my own).

<div>On February 21st, Megan and Mike noticed Olive was having trouble walking and quickly took her to the vet. A few hours later, she had completely lost function of her hind legs. She was diagnosed with a condition known as IVDH, Intervertebral Disc Herniation. This quickly led to an emergency surgery where the great doctors at MASH performed a Hemilaminectomy to relieve the pressure on her spinal cord. Without surgery, she was given less than a 40% chance to regain the use of her hind legs. Thankfully, with prompt treatment, most dogs recover fully from this procedure and she was given as high as a 90% chance of full recovery.

<div>Olive's surgery was a success but there is a still a long road ahead. Recovery from this injury can take up to 4 months. She is on strict crate/bed rest for a minimum of 4 weeks. Between administering medicine, assisted potty breaks, and general care, this has become a full time job for Megan and Mike and puts a constraint on them being able to work at the same time. Olive needs to have someone present with her around the clock, which means they would need to hire someone qualified to be with her on days they both have work.

<div>Spinal surgery was incredibly costly and the vet bills will continue to grow. In addition to the surgery, she has needed multiple X-Rays, an MRI, 3 office visits, two overnight stays, plus 6 different mediations. As a part of recovery, the vet has strongly suggested that they get Olive into physical therapy, which can include things like hydro therapy.

<div>Mike and Megan are both freelance workers in the Film and Television Industry. After the Hollywood strikes in 2023, steady work has been hard to come by. Then, on January 7th, they had to evacuate their home due to the Eaton Fire. Fortunately, their home survived but due to heavy smoke damage, they have been displaced for two months and currently do not know when they are able to return home. It's been an incredibly challenging time to say the least, and while they are so thankful they were able to act quickly for Olive, I am hoping we can help offer them some relief for the months ahead.

Help Matt Move Forward After Eaton Fire Loss

<div>I love John. I knew that from the moment, many years ago, when I walked into his natural foods store, O Happy Days Vegan Cafe. When I was in the area, I would always stop in and order from John's extremely nutritious, super cheap (to this day), homemade vegan menu. He always served me himself, even up until my last visit there two weeks ago. Walking through his shop and seeing reflected in it his beautiful, humble vision of what life could be like in Los Angeles always gave me hope for humanity. Observing him, his gentle respect and love for all who entered his store, and his dedication to serving nutritious food to all who wanted it at very affordable prices, had an extraordinary effect on me personally regarding what kind of person I wanted to be as a young "grown up": how I wanted to treat other people; how I wanted to be treated by others; how to just BE within my ideals; all while living in this vast, potentially quite dehumanizing CRAZY MORASS of a city. I would leave his shop with an ecstatic feeling that I could, well, be like him.

<div>O Happy Days burned down this past week, and so did John's house, and his two cars. Magically, he is alive! and ended up at the Pasadena Convention Center with other evacuees. I tracked him down through the magic of serendipidy, texts, friends, and relatives of friends (thank you Caroline for your initial text, and Philip, Caroline's brother, who knows John personally!). He is safe and now has a secure place to stay.

<div>I know there are many fundraisers happening right now. The devastation to Altadena, and to so many other parts of Southern CA is beyond beyond, and has caused me many tears. There is no way to describe what this cozy vegan café and health food store has meant to generations of locals and people throughout the Greater LA area. To this day, John has never stopped being the backbone of multiple chapters of FNB throughout the 31 years I’ve known him. His WEEKLY contribution of the staples of our meals (rice, beans, and onions) has fed HUNDREDS OF THOUSANDS of people over the decades. And that’s a fraction of his contributions to people and Mother Earth. For over 30 years now he has been a mentor to me, modeling the ways I want to live in the world and stand with the global community. I am deeply grateful for the love he has given me and I hope to live up to his example.

<div>I first met John about 20 years ago because he (and his customers via the tip jar he put out) generously donated the rice, beans, and onions that Los Angeles Food Not Bombs cook and serve every week, and we're not the only group he regularly donated to. I don't live near Oh Happy Days but I'd stop by for a plate every opportunity I could, hoping there was also a day-old to-go from the fridge for later. The eating area felt like a family dinner table and you could say hi to anyone who sat down. In an increasingly corporatized and depersonalized world, we need more places like Oh Happy Days where the business owner is also a quiet philanthropist, and also the guy who took your order and made your food from behind the counter. <div>I have known John for about 30 years. No other place had such healthy, wholesome, home-cooked organic vegan food. His meals were so affordable and filling and delicious! He always knew my “usual”… the biggest yam of the bunch, salad with his house mustard dressing, steamed greens, and whatever the soup of the day was. You really couldn’t call it soup. It was always so dense your spoon would stand up in it, which is why he really never needed a bowl, he would just add it to your plate! And the carob nut squares, perfect healthy dessert. The produce in the cooler was always so beautiful because he was very picky in what he would order from his suppliers. It was a funky, hippie dippy little café that was a landmark in the community. And as far as I’m concerned, the best food in town and the only food I wanted to go out to eat. John is such a gentle soul and I always looked forward to giving him a hug. In 2004 and 2008 when I was volunteering for vegan Congressman Dennis Kucinich’s presidential campaign, John generously donated many many meals to Dennis when he was in town campaigning. His adorable old yellow pick up truck that proudly had vegan café written on each side of it, was the mascot of the rear parking lot! He sold vegetable seeds and canned goods and packaged goods and assorted holistic potions by the ounce. Oh Happy Days was one of a kind and I can’t believe it was swept away in a heartbeat. Our community will forever be grateful to John for all his daily backbreaking work keeping his little market and cafe going. The main ingredients of course, were love and commitment to healthy people, a healthy planet and compassion for animals. I am so proud to call John Hopkins my friend.

Aid "O Happy Days Vegan Cafe" Recovery: Cafe and Home Lost

<div>On what should have been an exciting and happy and day, moving to be to their new home on The Island, Hailey and Trevor were devastated to discover that the moving truck they had rented and ALL their belongings had been stolen from out front of the house they were moving from. Absolutely everything they owned was in that truck. Thanks to an AirTag in the truck, and the help of neighbour hood cameras they were able to locate the truck and their stuff in Surrey. The RCMP got involved and towed the truck away but most of their stuff was gone. Luckily the item with the AirTag had been taken out and they were able to locate an exact address. They left boxes outside that they were able to identify and rcmp were able to enter the house. Unfortunately with these things it’s almost impossible to arrest people as they can’t 100% link those people to the crime. Things were damaged, including the truck. They also incurred a massive towing bill, and extra truck rental and lost ferry reservations. But most of all they feel so violated. Unfortunately Uhaul has a terrible insurance policy and doesn’t cover any of this.

Moving day nightmare

<div>My joyful, kindhearted nephew Anderson needs our help. The unthinkable has happened and he has been diagnosed with Leukemia.

<div>To know Anders is to love him. He is the light of our family and a patient and loving big brother to 16-month-old Hanna.
</div>

<div>When Anders began favoring one of his arms and we realized he was having trouble using it, we all expected that this robust and active 5-year-old had simply injured his arm. Over several weeks he saw his pediatrician and a series of specialists. After an MRI revealed a mass, a room full of doctors gave his parent’s the life-changing news that is every family’s nightmare - it was cancer.

<div>Since then, Anders has endured invasive procedures, countless COVID swabs and a biopsy at UCLA. Throughout the process, Anders showed his sweet nature and incredible bravery. The biopsy confirmed Anders has Acute Lymphoblastic Leukemia (ALL).

</div>
<div>Anders was immediately admitted to Cottage Hospital for surgery to implant a treatment port and he began his first round of chemotherapy the following day. After a week of hospitalization, Anders was able to come home and for now will continue treatment as an outpatient.
</div>

<div>We are heartened to know that Anders won’t face this challenge alone and that his caring friends and family will provide a strong support system. Keep the positive thoughts and good vibes coming!

All-in for Anders’ Fight Against Leukemia

Liam is an amazing young man, continuously smiling, always happy, lives life trying to have a good time and finding the joy in all things. He loves to make people laugh and enjoys a good laugh as well. He loves to dance and can be a goofball at times while putting a smile on your face. Liam is kind, caring, and very loving. In July of 2019 we learned of Liam’s DMD diagnosis. Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy is a rare, genetic, muscle-wasting disease, to date is fatal, and as parents can make you feel helpless and lost.  As heartbreaking as that is we are just not going to give up how, could we my little man is so loving and prays to God that he didn’t have to deal with this and as parents we want to do as much as we can. We just need a bit of support. Please help us meet our goal and keep Liam in the fight against DMD. All donations are greatly appreciated and we are thankful that you’re in the fight with us.

<div>My name is Anna-Lucia Kepler. I am 16 years old and a sophomore in high school. I am also a Life Scout in Scout BSA Troop 319 in La Mesa, CA. My journey in scouting began long before I was able to become a scout. In 2014 my brother joined the cub scouts and my mom became his den leader. Since my family was active in scouts, I participated alongside them in the meetings and other activities. However, I was not officially a scout and could not earn merit badges or any awards for my involvement. In 2019 the rules changed and girls were allowed to join and Boy Scouts became Scouts BSA. I became one of the founding members of the girls' side of our Troop and even through COVID and online meetings, I remained committed to this journey. <br />Now, as a Life Scout, I am ready to work towards the final rank in scouting: Eagle. To earn this rank, one of the requirements is for the scout to plan, fundraise for, and direct a service project benefitting their community. I chose to install the fencing for an ADA dog to create a wheelchair-accessible space in MacArthur park where people can let their dogs play. I have been working with La Mesa's Community Services Facilities Division to get my plan for the dog run approved. Now I am ready to move on to fundraising to purchase supplies for this project. This is where I need your help. I have estimated the project to cost $2,500 and I am asking for your support through a donation in order to make this project successful. Any amount will help me reach my goal and I thank you for your support.

After the Fire: Help Larry and Mary Boven Rebuild

Hi everyone , on September 9th I was diagnosed with Breast Cancer. I’ll be receiving radiation with the possibility of a double mastectomy. I’ve been private about my condition but at the urging of friends and family, I decided to swallow my pride and make a Gofundme.
