<div>In June, Heather’s world was upended when she was diagnosed with a rare form of ovarian cancer after months of debilitating abdominal pain. Her first surgery, on Wednesday, July 26, 2023, went from a planned 4 hours to 12 hours with a blood transfusion. They moved her back to the ICU on a vent to allow her to stabilize before removing more cancer. Thursday's surgery was 5 hours long. Between the two surgeries, they removed her spleen, stomach (connecting the esophagus directly to the small intestine), part of the bladder, part of the large intestine and her ovaries. They removed masses from the diaphragm, mesentery, small intestine, abdominal wall and pelvic floor. She stayed on the vent until Friday afternoon. She is still in the ICU and will be in the hospital for at least a few more days. She is pressing her pain button as little as possible so she can keep her smile on for visitors because that's who she is.

<div>Heather is a loving wife and mom of 4, 3 of whom are still at home. She is an <strong>amazing </strong>friend, the first to volunteer if someone is in need. Her smile is infectious. She has faithfully served her community for decades in various capacities both as a unit secretary at Saint Mary’s Emergency Department and more recently as a 911 Dispatcher for the Kent County Sheriff’s Department where she is the first point of contact for people in crisis. She is loved by SO many, the hospital had to make her name undiscoverable so she would not have too many visitors.

<div>We humbly ask for assistance to help with living expenses and medical costs the family will incur as she faces a very long road ahead. After this surgery and chemotherapy, she will very likely need treatment at another healthcare system due to the nature of her cancer. Treatments and travel out of state are often not well covered by insurance. Ryan has taken a leave of absence from work to care for Heather as she recovers.

<div>Becky had an elective surgery on January 17, 2022. This surgery created many, many complications.  Her final surgery to repair her esophagus was March 13, 2023. It's been a long haul with a ton of twists and turns. This fundraiser will help with all the large medical expenses she continues to receive. You are never prepared to get the phone call that someone in your family, someone you love, is in the fight of their lives.  In February of this year, at 32 years old, our brother Jake was diagnosed with colorectal cancer.  Since that day he has endured numerous tests and several chemo treatments, but we are still at the base of the hill in this fight.  <br /><br />14 years ago, Jake followed in our father’s footsteps and joined the Walker Fire Department in Walker Michigan.  He has also been an EMT for the last 12 years.  <br /><br />Jake is always ready to lend a helping hand when needed, and the only thing he loves more than helping others when they need it most is his family.  He and his wife, Chrissy, have 2 beautiful daughters, Emmalyn (4) and Caroline (1).  They love to go camping, fishing, kayaking, and just generally being outside.  <br /><br />Due to Jake’s profession, he is not able to work while receiving his treatments and the medical bills are starting to roll in.  He is still facing major surgery and continued chemo treatments after that.  It is a long battle, but he is facing it with unwavering courage and strength.  <br /><br />Joshua 1:9  Have I not commanded you? Cancer Messed with the Wrong Guy!

Hello Internet! My name is Hannah. I’m a 28 year old paramedic and ESL teacher from Michigan. As some of you may know, I have been experiencing increasingly severe and at times debilitating back pain over the past year. As a result of not having health insurance last year, being a “tough” paramedic, and being an all-around curmudgeon, I toughed out the pain until 2020.

While I was in New York City helping the ambulance services there deal with the COVID 19 response, I finally got an MRI which showed a nearly 7cm tumor on my spinal cord, which the doctors have tentatively named a myxopapillary ependymoma.

The tumor is taking up 99.5% of my spinal canal, according to my neurosurgeon.  I was in complete shock and I had no idea what to do. I continued to work for several more days and even finished my final exams and graduated from GVSU with my Bachelor’s in Biology during this time. In the weeks since my diagnosis, I have had MRI’s of the rest of my spine and my brain, the results of which are still pending.

I am scheduled to have surgery to remove the tumor this Saturday at the University of Michigan, and this will require time off work, physical therapy, travel expenses, possible radiation, and medical equipment purchases. Any money we could raise to help my family and I would be so incredibly appreciated!

Help Hannah Hodges BEAT spinal cord CANCER

<p>My brother in law Thomas Datema was recently diagnosed with Adenoid Cystic Carcinoma. Tom is a firefighter and EMT for Grandville Fire Department. Tom and Sheri are currently in Houston at MD Anderson Cancer Center working with the brilliant staff to come up with a plan to beat his cancer. Tom is a heroic firefighter and EMT for Grandville Fire Department. He has risked his life thousands of times and saved so many lives unselfishly. He is a devout Christian and the true definition of a hero.

<p><span style="font-size:1.0625rem;">Some of Toms treatment could involve experimental treatments that insurance may not cover. Due to the rarity of this disease Tom treatment will all need to be done in Houston. MD Anderson is a pioneer hospital with Tom’s disease thus having to stay in Houston. Tom will be in Houston for up to 8 weeks to have several rounds of chemotherapy and radiation. Tom is hoping to be close enough to the hospital to walk for treatments lessening any exposure riding public transportation while on chemo. After treatment Tom will need to return about every 3 months for rechecks for up to 2 years. All this means travel and living expenses away from home with some additional medical costs. Anything you can give would be greatly appreciated </span>

Firefighter Hero Cancer Fight

My Dad, Collin, was diagnosed with Stage IV Melanoma in January 2014 at age 64.  The cancer has already spread to his organs with tumors in his abdomen, lung lining, and lymphnodes.  Despite feeling relatively healthy on a day-to-day basis, he was given a terminal diagnosis.<br /><br /> He is undergoing an intensive chemotherapy treatment, but it is not a cure; merely intended to extend his life for a little bit longer.  His original diagnosis gave him a year to live.  With chemotherapy, we are hoping he’s around for several more years.<br /><br /> He has a loving wife of 41 years, 3 children and 6 grand-children.  He proundly serves as the Comander at the American Legion post in Harbor Springs , MI and is a Vietnam Vet.  My dad enjoys gardening, travel, and spending time with his growing family.  He certainly has a lot of life left to live!<br /><br /> Our family is of Scotch-Irish descent (McFarland, originating from MacFarlane ancestry). My parents have always dreamed of traveling to Scotland and/or Ireland, but like many of us, have never had the opportunity present itself.  My siblings and I have decided to take it upon ourselves to make this trip possible for them.  In a light-hearted conversation we had with Dad earlier this year, he jokingly said it’s on his “Bucket List.”  We have dedicated this year, 2014, to knocking things off that bucket list for him.<br /><br /> We’re looking to raise $5,000 to send my parents to Scotland.  The trip needs to happen while Dad is still in good health and spirits.  We’re hoping to send them this fall.  Please help!
