<div>This gentleman with the contagious smile is my friend, Brendan. Brendan is 28 and has been diagnosed with an aggressive form of Multiple Sclerosis -- Secondary Progressive MS. Within a few months he will undergo an extraordinary stem cell procedure called Autologous Hematopoietic Stem Cell Transplantation. This procedure, aHSCT, will wipe out his defective immune system with chemotherapy and then reboot it using harvested blood stem cells to slow down his MS progression. A majority of the procedure will be covered by insurance, but some unfortunately will not. In addition, Brendan will be unable to work for 3 to 6 months depending on his recovery progress. <div>I'm humiliated to be showing my face here... again... hat in hand... again. But as I sit here, crying, holding back an anxiety attack, I am scared. I am defeated. I am hopeless. I feel like societal trash, a total failure.

<div>I've talked to friends who assure me I'm kind, and intelligent... a good friend. Worthy of love. They tell me that I put goodness into the world and my heart is all about love. Unfortunately, kindness doesn't pay.

<div>I chose to come home to Bloomington on Mother's Day, in a moment of emergency. Without divulging other people's personal information, my parents needed help. I was the one that answered that call. I dropped the group therapy that has been saving my life and came home. I've struggled. I've back-tracked. But it was the right thing to do.

</div>
<div>You may know that in February, I'd saved up $20k. I was thrilled to be able to start actual financial planning. And then my weak, pathetic mind betrayed me. And because I was unable to just get over it and move on, I checked into the hospital for help. That weakness cost me 1/4 of that savings.

</div>
<div>I spent the next two months in intensive therapy, with medications. I was job hunting, too, but kept hearing from my support system, that I should put my energy toward healing. Toward me. I tried to do that. I've grown a lot. I've learned a lot. I shouldn't have done that. Because now I could pay with the roof over my head.

<div>Because I'm all alone, with no one to hold me while I struggle, I have now cut down on therapy and cut my cable. I'm taking less medication than I'm prescribed to try to stretch it out and save money, and I have worked non-stop at getting a job. I've spent far too much time on myself. It was a luxury I couldn't afford and shouldn't have. But I did. I was desperate. I don't want to end up in that hotel room with that dastardly plan again. I really do want to be here.

<div>Happiness is no longer my goal. My goal is Survival.
</div>

<div>For the first time in my career, I'm getting rejection notices before anyone, human or robot, could possibly read my resume. There's no chance. I have to tell you, I'm losing hope. I won't give up. And my bum knee, master's degree, and I will stand and serve coffee for hours if I have to.

<div>But in the meantime, as I drove into my parent's neighborhood, my car backfired and huge clouds of black, stinky smoke poured out. It's been in the shop this entire time, and it's fixed, but it wiped me out. That $20K is history. And I now regret going to the hospital and beginning therapy. I should have just kept going and stuffing it all down. But I didn't.

<div>I cannot pay June's rent. Or car payment. Or utilities.

<div>I've been told that my choices led me here and I just have to deal with it. I've been told I'm a bad investment and not worth helping. Absolutely. I've made mistakes. Stupid ones. We all have, but mine must have been exceptional to land me at 54 with nothing to show for my entire life. I'm not willing to give up yet.

<div>I've also been knocked off track by a series of health traumas that have stalled my progress over and over. Sepsis. Pneumonia. Two Pulmonary Embolisms. Four knee surgeries. Two broken ankles at the same time, followed by a shattered foot. A concussion resulting in a TBI. An emergency appendectomy. An emergency gallbladder removal. I have serious PTSD from an assault and other significant life experiences I wouldn't wish on anyone. Massive anxiety, and depression that flat-out scares me.

<div>These medical issues have ruined my credit. I cannot get a loan. It even costs money to declare bankruptcy, but I will do that as soon as I can. Bankrupt in finances and hope. That's how I feel right now.

<div>I know I have no right to ask.
</div>

<div>I know I don't deserve it.

<div>But honestly, I am not sure how to live in my car with two cats. And without them? There is no point.

<div>I live in Chicago. My rent alone, for a small apartment with active train tracks in the back yard that shake my home ten times a day, is $1850. Assuming I get food from a charity, it will be $4K to just barely keep afloat for June. To find a job these days, I need wifi (no cable), my phone, my car. I need my meds, and the basic therapy... I'm afraid of what will happen if I just quit. Seriously.

<div>I will give up on finding a job I've worked toward my whole career. I will get a job at a call center, or at Starbucks, or McDonalds. I will get a job this month. My pride and confidence are gone. I don't care about happiness or fulfillment anymore. I just need a job.

<div>Buried in an avalanche of embarrassment, sadness, fear, and shame, I'm asking for more help. I don't deserve it. But I don't know what else to do.

Weary of asking. But still need help.

On Feb. 1, Wendy Koenig and her wife of 10 years, Chris, got horribly shocking news that the food poisoning Wendy thought she had was something terribly worse.<br /><br />She has a diagnosis and will be starting treatment soon. As with any situation that comes out of left field, the Koenigs were not prepared for such stressful news nor the incredible expense that now comes with this healthcare process.<br /><br />Over the years, Chris and Wendy have often referred to their group of friends and many of Wendy's students as belonging to the "Island of Misfit Toys" because they can personally relate to the difficult challenges we all face.<br /><br />With Wendy's incredible love, kindness, and patience, she has always been there to help, no matter if it was a charity for dogs, cats, donkeys, pigs, soup kitchens, public radio, political campaigns, or any colleague or friend who was ever in need.<br /><br />Wendy and Chris now need our help.  <br /><br />If you can help in any way to lessen the burden of these expenses for her and Chris at this time, they need it!  Your contributions will help cover anything that must be paid for out of pocket. She is an art critic for <a href="https://www.artpapers.org/tag/wendy-koenig/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">ArtPapers</a>, an independent critical voice covering contemporary art &amp; culture in the world today.  <br /><br />As a professor over these many years, she's taught thousands of students from general education part-timers to Fulbright scholars. <div>Friends... I am in the final lap to having my life back on track, but oh, what a lap it has been!! So many yellow and red flags, and that checkered flag is in sight.

<div>But I need help. I have borrowed from my parents to the point of causing issues. They love and support me, but are headed into unsure years, with a political climate that could affect their savings, and their golden years. I cannot ask for one dime more.

<div>And of course, in true Kristin style, I've hit one huge hiccup that is stressing me out beyond measure. I've been struggling to deal with it, and its many facets, over the last month. And I'm finally making headway. But it is turning into, yet another, financial nightmare.

<div>I am asking... nay, begging... for one last shot of help.  A gift, a loan, strings attached, a scolding included, insults, jokes... I don't care. I need help.

<div>Some transparency - If you didn't already know, I'm a total loser and I mess up pretty much everything I attempt these days. If it has anything to do with my car, it's a guarantee.

<div>Two years ago, I was in a fender bender. Officially my fault, but the old biddy was playing road rage games and I absolutely didn't swipe her on purpose. My car took the brunt. Insurance dealt with her, and I moved on.

<div>Well... turns out that while I was sending Geico monthly payments, my policy had been canceled. Cute trick. It was the pandemic and I needed to register my new (now damaged) car. There was a months-long waiting list for an in-person DMV appointment in Virginia. I had an appointment on the books... in four months. No notice. No nothing. Geico canceled my insurance because my car wasn't registered.

<div>I had no clue.
</div>

<div>As a result, also without my knowledge, my license was suspended.

<div>I was gloriously clueless, moving halfway across the country and taking a few road trips here and there.

<div>Then I made the mistake of driving in Carmel, Indiana.

<div>The week before my new job started, I was pulled over because I made a left turn, late at night, no traffic, and turned into the lane next to the one I was in line for. Seriously.

<div>And there, a very nice cop ran my info and filled me in on my many transgressions.

</div>
<div>I think these baby blues have never been so wide in my life. It was clear I had no idea I'd been driving around like that. He took no pity and towed my car.

<div>You may remember my plea for a lift to Chicago. That was because I couldn't get my car out of towing without a valid license. But I couldn't get a license without insurance. But i couldn't get insurance without a license. It's a cute trick. Chicken? Egg? Screw you.

<div>It has taken me a month of stress and communicating with multitudes of strangers, which causes me an abnormal amount of stress. But I finally have (crappy) insurance. And tomorrow, I will (please gawd) be able to renew my license.
</div>

<div>But I owe. Oh, I owe. 
</div>

<div>The car has been sitting in the tow lot. Incredibly kind people run it, but they charge per day. I've racked up $1575... so far. I can't get it out until I have all my ducks in a row (see below) and the freaking Carmel police release it. The cop assured me that they look kindly on people who've worked to get those freaking ducks in a row. Hope springs eternal.

<div>I also have a court date, which could stretch out my poor Lucifer's time in lockup. Working on that, too.

<div>Insurance ran me $500 today. That was all I had. Literally have $24 to pay bills, eat, pay rent... you know, live, until mid-August.

<div>If all this had happened next month, it still would have sucked, but I would have been able to cover it. Yay new job!

<div>I have been so tight with the money that was loaned and gifted to me earlier this year. I've eaten PB&amp;J and not done anything extra at all.  But I have had to uber to my new job and it has sucked me dry.

Ooops, I Did it Again. Yup. Again.

My name is Robin.   April 16, 2015 my son Nicholas was found dead, causes are unknown at this time.  He leaves behind his children whom he adored so very  much!Their ages vary from one, four, and five yrs. old. I lost my job in March of this year, I have no vehicle, and my home is now in the foreclosure process. I don't have any money to even start his burial process. The most important thing to me is to get him buried, have a service for him, and get him a nice headstone telling the world what a great Father he was to his children.
