<div>My connection with nature began when I was four years old. Growing up in the lush mountains of the tropical island of Papua New Guinea infused my early years with unique nature encounters. Each day was an adventure, from hiking muddy trails to remote waterfalls, visiting Bird of Paradise sanctuaries, crafting imaginary worlds with friends using natural materials, and beyond. Vacation on the island meant visiting the coast, snorkeling over coral, and marveling at mangroves but never understanding the magnitude of what we were witnessing and climbing on.

<div><strong>An Unrealized Path</strong>

<div>My grandmother was the first to teach me how to care for nature, particularly plants and birds. How to notice and appreciate the little details, and how it can flourish with a bit of kindness and patience. From middle school, she cultivated my green thumb and nurtured my bond with nature, even as I continued to live abroad as a teenager. She died in August of 2019 after several days in hospice. Her legacy inspired me to honor the flora and fauna around me, and nature became my refuge, providing a balm for my soul during those challenging days as we awaited her passing. Her death reinforced our shared love for the outdoors and the importance of connecting with nature. From the verdant mountains of my childhood hikes to the transformative experiences in my grandmother’s garden, nature has always been my haven.

<div>During the 2020 pandemic lockdowns, I immersed myself in gardening and yardwork, embracing permaculture methods and finding peace in the intricacies of the backyard ecosystem. This transformative period offered much time for meditation and mulling over life’s priorities, leading me to realize my true calling lies in environmental stewardship rather than conventional healthcare, which I’d already studied for a few years. That fall, I switched my major to Natural Resources and Environmental Science and felt more at home than ever. I hold a 3.9 GPA as a senior and am passionate about making a difference in environmental sustainability. Every day, I’m amazed at the path that led me to where I am today. It’s an incredible feeling to know what you’re meant to do.

<div>Tonight my car was stolen from the parking lot of Mesa Rim Climbing Gym in Mission Valley, San Diego. My car has been my home for about the past four months, as I had been unemployed after leaving a very traumatic academic work environment last year and have no safety net to fall back on. I had just moved my belongings from storage in Los Angeles back to San Diego to a friend's place, where I am staying while I start my new job and get back on my feet after facing on and off homelessness in the past year. While I ended up securing a really great job that starts in mid-September, this period of unemployment has left me with no savings, late credit card payments, and I am basically starting from less than zero. The fact that my car was just stolen puts me into an even worse situation. I have only ever been able to afford liability insurance so I will not get any form of reimbursement from my insurance.

I was halfway done moving my stuff but it was raining so I took a break and went to climb, planning on moving the rest of my stuff out of the car afterwards. I feel stupid, but I really didn't think anyone would steal my entire car from the climbing gym parking lot I have been going to for years. I have now lost everything that gave me a sense of home--my art, books, items that are comforting and important to me. Plus, I do not have the funds or credit to buy a new vehicle at the moment. Additionally, that car had been my home and had given me a sense of agency in the worst chapter of my life. Now I am asking for help raising money so I can buy a new vehicle and recover some of the lost items that were in the car.

<div>In 2021, I made the decision to leave higher education as I was working as a contracted instructor for a university as well as full-time at a climbing gym just to make ends meet. I was working over 60 hours a week and quickly burnt out, which is why I decided to take what savings I did have and my tax return and devote all of my time to applying to jobs that would pay me enough to stop living paycheck to paycheck. This took longer than I expected -- almost six months -- which is why I ended up having to live out of my car for a period of time. The fact that my car was stolen after living in it, depending on it, and finding a renewed sense of agency and control through it just makes the situation worse. In time, I will finally be financially secure for the first time in my entire life, but this event has set me back even more. I would appreciate any help in recovering from this. I worked very hard to find a job that would finally allow me to be secure enough to recover from accidents and emergencies like this, but I am just not out of the woods yet.

Unable to get <br />outside with ease, making everything he does exhausting and <br />unenjoyable.<br /><br />We did buy a manual wheel chair, however it is heavy and he is <br />now unable to use his arms to self propel and it’s so cumbersome <br />and there is no pleasure or enthusiasm for him to use it.<br />It’s become easier for him to stay home.... not good.<br /><br /><br />After doing tons of research I stumbled across this amazing wheel chair.<br />For those of you who know Col, you’ll know what a huge fan of <br />formula one he is. If you're reading this, it's probably because you followed a social media link that included a pretty difficult announcement. <br /><br /><strong>Recently, Jenny Parks was diagnosed with Hodgkins Lymphoma.</strong> <br /><br /><strong>The Good News</strong>: she's at Stage 2a, which means that while the cancer has spread from the lymph nodes in her neck down to an area in her chest, it has not spread across her body or into major organs. We caught it early, and she has every intention of kicking its butt. <br /><br /><strong>The Bad News</strong>: kicking its butt requires at least four months of treatment--two of chemotherapy, and two of either chemotherapy or radiation, after a scan informs us how effectively the treatment is working. <br /><br /><strong>The Worse News</strong>: beating cancer in the United States is *expensive.* Even with insurance, some of her bills, paid out of pocket, are in the thousands. Her insurance has been vague about what they will and will not cover. And it's nigh impossible to work steadily while undergoing treatment--it's hard enough just to focus on your health and keep up your strength. She needs a break. <br /><br /><strong>That's where we come in.</strong> <br /><br />Every dollar donated is one she doesn't have to worry about earning over the next few months. Our initial goal covers her deductible and a few months worth of expenses, including rent, groceries, and a buffer for medical care that may not be covered by insurance. It's so good to see you again!<br /><br />Crothers, the friendly face behind the counter hasn't had a day off in almost 50 years, but due to the current state of the world, sales at his store have been effected. This campaign aims to give him not 1, but 2 days off and some financial security. Help old Crothers take a few days off! Don't worry though, he's always there if you need him.<br /><br />All donations of $25 (or more) get a LIMITED edition Crothers enamel pin AND a special thank you note from Crothers. This is VERY limited however. Right now we have 100! GIVE Crothers a day off!

Crouton and all the sanctuary animals go through about 10-15 bales of hay every day 365. That is a lot of hay! We work with local farmers to source the most nutritious hay that is cut and cured properly before baling. We are so thankful to all of you for helping us each week to bring in loads of hay. In late summer and early fall we begin buying wagon loads to fill our loft for the winter. <br /><br /><br /><br />More information about SquirrelWood Equine Sanctuary Inc.: Squirrelwood provides sanctuary to 35 horses and an assortment of other animals. We have a Veterans Equine Assisted Therapy program that runs year round. We provide services to veterans and their families free of charge.

I’m asking for $500 because of transaction fees and also because I’ll need to get a new license and spend two days at the court and DMV doing these things! <br /><br />I’m really excited to get my name changed, but also, it’s expensive!
