<div>this is Garrett and Savanna Brittain. We are trying to help out our friend Percy. Percy is diabetic, and due to a low blood sugar level he collapsed Friday morning. When he became responsive he realized he had broken his ankle. Percy was taken by ambulance to the ER where it was discovered that he has multiple fractures to not only his ankle but also his foot. Due to the severity of the injury, they are working to get him in for surgery as soon as possible. As you may imagine, the road to recovery for an injury like this is going to be long. They are saying once surgery’s are complete the recovery time is typically 6-8 weeks but with Percy being a diabetic, it will be closer to 8-12 weeks. Possibly even longer.  Percy is a well known worker in the food and beverage industry here in Charleston. Obviously he will be out of work for a long time and still has bills to pay (Plus medical bills). If you are able to help Percy in any way, please do! Once he is out of surgery and in recovery, we will be starting a meal train. Please be on the lookout for that as well!

<div>Hello all! Smokey Blase is a friend indeed to all who frequented his music venue pub “Smokey’s Place” for many years. Sadly Smokey’s fight with cancer during the pandemic forced Smokey’s Place doors to permanently close in early 2021. Smokey’s legacy of The Blues Jam and Rockpile live on and he remains a constant friend to all and supporter of musicians, live music and local venues which support the musicians so beloved at Smokey’s Place. He gave us all a place to call home and now he needs us more than ever. Smokey has battled cancer since 2016, losing a kidney in the process, and after beating various forms of the disease, his fight is not over. Unfortunately he now has stage 4 lung cancer which has metastasized to his brain. Medical costs are rising and he’s once again in for the fight of his life. This fund raiser precedes a large benefit that is being planned for the fall and our hope is to raise as much money as we can to assist our dear friend in battling this terribly cruel illness. Our hope is that his needs be met so that he not have additional stressors during the fight against this cruel and unusual disease. The homeless population is growing all across the nation, and with that growth comes needs that are often overlooked. When someone is on their feet all day, standing or walking, it takes a toll—especially if their shoes don’t fit or their socks are dirty. Most people don’t think about this when helping the homeless; they focus on food or blankets. But anyone who’s ever had sore feet knows how much it can affect your whole body. I want to do what I can to help.

 To make sure the help goes where it’s needed most, I’ll be working with a liaison from the homeless community to figure out the right sizes for both men and women. I’ll use the funds to buy new shoes, socks, underwear, and toiletries at discount stores, and I’ll also reach out to shoe manufacturers about buying in bulk. If this works well, I hope to expand the effort beyond Charleston, reaching more people regionally and even nationally.

 Dignity matters. Something as simple as shoes that fit, clean socks, or a toothbrush can make an enormous difference in someone’s physical and emotional well-being.
