I’m raising funds for my 74-year-old mother, who has been struggling with worsening vision for several months. We began noticing changes when she started falling, getting on the wrong bus, and hurting herself accidentally. There were also serious safety concerns at home, including turning on the gas stove without realizing the burner was not lit and not being able to cook food thoroughly. When I went to visit her a few months ago, I could see that something was very wrong. She told me it felt like she was living in a dark room even with the lights on. After paying out of pocket for an eye exam, she learned that she has glaucoma. The surgery she needs to remove the glaucoma costs $5,000. She had kept this to herself for several months because she was afraid of losing her independence and being placed in a nursing home, so she has been suffering in silence. Her vision loss is affecting almost every part of her daily life. She sleeps with the lights on and keeps them on during the day because she cannot see well, which has driven up her electric bill. She cannot always tell if her food is done, often spills her morning coffee because she cannot see well enough to pour it, and has trouble cleaning because she cannot see dirt or where things belong. She is also unable to wash dishes completely, read well enough to shop, or safely use the bus because she cannot see curbs or tell which bus she is getting on or where she needs to get off. One especially heartbreaking effect of her vision loss is that she is not able to see the faces of her grandchildren clearly. My mother lives on a fixed income, and after paying for rent, utilities, and food, she only has a couple hundred dollars left each month for everything else. That makes this surgery impossible for her to afford on her own, even though she needs it as soon as the money can be raised. Any support for my mother’s glaucoma surgery would mean so much to us.
