<div>Many of you know j and Bear. For years, their family has been a soft landing spot and a loud voice for the queer and trans community. Whether it’s answering late-night phone calls to help someone navigate a crisis, helping a parent figure out what to say to their kid’s principal, fighting back against discriminatory policies like Bill 137, or doing deep community organizing they have chosen to be visible.

<div>They chose to be loud and visible for their community.

<div><strong><em>But right now, that visibility has put a target on their backs.</em></strong>
</div>

<div>Recently, j was targeted by a coordinated smear campaign by far-right, sensationalist media outlets (including Fox News, The Daily Mail, The New York Post, and Rebel News). While the international news cycle has been horrendous, the fires of hate have started locally. A prominent local business’s social media account has weaponized this story to boost their own profile, continuously amplifying hateful rhetoric and inciting targeted harassment against queer, trans, and Indigenous people in their city.

<div>Because of this constant local amplification, a petition is circulating that explicitly names j, throwing around dangerous, baseless accusations that directly incite violence. While organizations are mentioned, j is the only individual person being singled out by name. j being singled out has resulted in j receiving a lot of physical hate mail, email and calls to j’s work calling for j to be fired.

<div>Living in a city of a quarter-million people means it’s small enough that they are recognized wherever they go, since j has been the most visible target, j is being recognized from this hate campaign. The level of alert to their family’s nervous systems is exhausting and unsustainable. 
</div>

<div>They  have received credible threats to their  safety. They love their  community, but right now, they need to protect their home.
</div>

<div><strong>What Do They Need Money For</strong>

<div>They have consulted with both a home security specialist and legal counsel to figure out how to best protect their  family and peace of mind. They cannot disclose every specific detail of these plans because keeping "bad actors" in the dark is part of keeping them safe. They need to raise $30,000 to fund two critical areas of protection:

Project Safe Haven: Protecting j and Bear

<div>Yellowknife has had a very cold winter, and despite having work done to the belly-bag of her home last year, her water and sewage lines froze. The only company who can deal with frozen pipes had a long wait list, so my mom went without water and sewer for over a week. When the company was able to come thaw out the lines, the sewage line had broken.

<div>(Note: The company who did the work on the belly-bag last year swore it is not their fault the pipes froze and will not fix it.)

My mom tried going to the bank to get a loan, she was denied. The local housing authority and even the Tlicho government denied her help. <div>On Tuesday January 23rd nine baristas were laid off from Java Blend Coffee in Halifax Nova Scotia. We were informed that our employment was being severed effective immediately and that our last shifts worked were our last shifts ever.

<div>We are being paid out according to the minimum standards as set by the Nova Scotian Labour board. However for part time employees and others lacking seniority these amounts are very small. We are seeking funds to help bridge the time between our layoffs and unemployment and to assist each other in paying rent, bills, and buying medication.

This sudden turn of events was heartbreaking both as friends of Wallace, and of Jay, and <strong>a few days ago we got the bad news: Wallace was diagnosed with FIP, feline infectious peritonitis. In the words of Jay, "It's really bad. Could be only days." </strong>

<div>Apropos of Jay's legacy with The Underground Railroad, it turns out there is an underground treatment protocol for FIP using an off-label drug unapproved by the FDA – and it's known to be successful. The good cat dad he is, Jay rushed into action and got Wallace set up for treatment within the day. But this is just the beginning of our hero's journey.

<div>Because this treatment is underground and takes time, it results in *wildly* expensive vet bills. We're talking thousands upon thousands of dollars getting racked up in a very short period. No matter how much you prepare for such an expense, you take a HARD hit, and it can take a very long time to recover from that. The $5K goal is just a fraction of what this type of care costs. As one of Jay's friends cautioned about the treatment Wallace is undergoing, "It's a marathon, so prepare yourself for a long haul."

<div>It's absolutely terrible that with how our systems are set up, people essentially risk going bankrupt or having to choose to end their best friend's life, and no one, especially Jay, should have to be in that position.

Wallace Needs Our Help Right Now!

So some of you know that I care for three (fixed) stray cats. Kitten (who's lived under my house since I moved here), Prince Harry (who showed up about a year ago) and Scruff, who showed up six months ago. All three cats get two meals a day, fresh water, and I built them shelters to keep them warm over the winter. (They thank me by bringing me rat heads.)<br /><br />While Kitten and Harry are in great shape, Scruff showed up six months ago and was a total mess. <br /><br /><img src="https://d2g8igdw686xgo.cloudfront.net/57122767_1621655204327616_r.jpeg" width="100%" media_type="3" alt="57122767_1621655204327616_r.jpeg" /><br /><br />Kitten took Scruff (who I thought was a boy, but turns out to be a girl) under her wing. Scruff was filthy, matted, clearly had something wrong with her mouth.<br /><br />Over the past six months, I have been able to earn Scruff's trust a bit. I was able to groom her for 30 seconds at a time, cutting out some of the mats. She wanted to be pet, but wouldn't let me touch her face. While I managed to clean her up somewhat, she was losing weight, she couldn't groom, and her mouth was clearly infected and oozing pus. <br /><br /><img src="https://d2g8igdw686xgo.cloudfront.net/57122767_1621655275507911_r.jpeg" width="100%" media_type="3" alt="57122767_1621655275507911_r.jpeg" /><br /><br />She wasn't food motivated (she couldn't really eat!) and she didn't care about catnip. I tried to put her in a cat carrier multiple times, but the tiny cat was pretty agile when she wanted to be. Even if I managed to capture her, I wasn't exactly sure who I could take her to, because not all vets work on stray/feral cats.<br /><br />Enter <a href="https://www.shilohsvet.com/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Shiloh Mobile Vet</a> , who I use for my dog. Dr. Rosen said if I could capture Scruff, they'd come pick her up and work on her. Scruff had taken to a cardboard box my roommate Patty put out, so we put that in a dog crate that I left open.<br /><br />Over the last few weeks, I got Scruff used to being picked up and put back down. Just up and down, no big deal. Then on Thursday, I made my move. I picked her up. Put her down. Picked her up. Put her down. Ah, Scruff thought, this game. But then I picked her up, shoved her in the dog crate and slammed the door.<br /><br /><img src="https://d2g8igdw686xgo.cloudfront.net/57122767_1621655411635874_r.jpeg" width="100%" media_type="3" alt="57122767_1621655411635874_r.jpeg" /><br /><br />Dr. Rosen picked her up. It turns out that Scruff had a FOXTAIL lodged in her gums, behind her teeth. Her mouth was severely infected, and she had to have all of her teeth pulled except for her canines. She and her staff went above and beyond, so I covered it. I feel weird about asking for help. There's a lot of people/issues out there that really need it. But a $2500 vet bill for a cat I don't technically even own is a lot. Some people will think it's  waste, but I couldn't watch her suffer.<br /><br />But look at this cat! De-Scruffing Scruff - updated as of September 15!

**i have updated our goal amount, as Wilma is now around the $8000 mark in expenses.  Everyone's help with this newest bill has been very emotional and humbling for our family.  <strong>While $2600 is her minimum goal, we will have ongoing bills and will accept any help offered beyond the goal amount</strong>.**<br /><br />Wilma is everyone's baby.  She helped us open Speakeasy Tattoo and has been a standing manager of the shop since.  Almost any client knows Wilma, and has been doled a healthy dose of comforting from her fluffiness during some hard tattoo sessions.<br /><br />Wilma has kidney problems, and lately, a stomach bacteria has kicked those problems into overdrive.  She is having a hard time keeping on weight, and now she's experiencing tooth pain from being so gaunt, and having her gums rub her bad teeth.  She has little comfort when eating but is very hungry and interested in food, meaning her kidneys have a good go left.<br /><br />Wilma has gone from 3.7 kg to 2.0 in a matter of around 8 weeks, and her kidneys and stomach are struggling to turn around and help her absorb the proteins she needs to gain weight.  Once her stomach ulcerations can heal, she can focus on recovering from her unexpected associated health issues.<br /><br />I pride myself on caring well for my animals and I always have money set aside, as someone without pet insurance.  However, I have to humbly ask for any help the Wilma Lovers out there may want to give to her.  WILMA NEEDS TO BE IN THE HOSPITAL FOR 3 DAYS ON FLUIDS.  This is estimated around $3000.00.  In this time, Dr Doug Mason and his team and the Veterinary Emergency Clinic will be watching her around the clock and administering all antibiotics and iv fluids.<br /><br />I really can't carry this burden right now, and I don't want to lose my best friend, and a valuable Speakeasy Staff Member, (hell, one of our founding staff!) to something as stupid as a bill for IV fluids.  <br /><br />I don't have children, and Wilma is everything to me.  I will be eternally grateful, and I will definitely throw tattoo love in the way of anyone able to donate.  I don't expect anyone to, and I don't begrudge you thinking I'm shitty for asking for money.  I hate doing it.  I get it.  But if you can, and you want to, know that you've done a really special thing for me and my family, and we will truly keep your generosity in our hearts.

The Neal Family have always stuck together - that's how we roll and we live close together too. When the floods came, they wiped out the bottom floor of my home, but completely damaaged the homes of and my sisters, nephews and children. They have been severely impacted by the historic flooding that has devasted many Louisiana communities. Although everyone is safe, many of them have had a total loss - water reaching the roof line. Please help us rebuild their homes. These funds will be used to replace appliances, cabinets and pay for reconstruction of the homes that were not a total loss like my daughter's home. <br /><br />BIO:<br />Kenny Neal, born in New Orleans and raised in Baton Rouge, began playing music at a young age. Learning the basics from his father, singer and Blues harmonica master, Raful Neal, Kenny is known as a modern swamp-blues and multi-instrumentalist, that draws from the sizzling sounds of his native Louisiana.

<p>UPDATE: EGG WAS ABLE TO COME HOME!!! I am so grateful for everyone's donations because without the support I would have had to make a very tough decision.With the donations I was able to pay for him to stay in the hospital longer and the doctor was able to provide him &nbsp;pricey meds through an i.v. that eventually cleared his intestines. He responded so well to the medication that the vet no longer thinks surgery is a pressing matter. &nbsp;He's still being treated for poisoning with three different medications at home and currently seems to be improving. I have to keep a close eye on him for the next little while to make sure he doesn't relapse. Fingers crossed for a healthy kitten Egg! My MASSIVE vet bill is still looming and I am so grateful to have so many wonderful friends who are helping me out. THANK YOU FOR SAVING EGGY'S LIFE!!!</p><p><br></p><p>My dear kitten Egg is eight months old. I rescued him from a farm in Quebec last June. Last week he fell very ill. I brought him to the vet on Tuesday, but when he started throwing up and was unable to keep down any fluids I had to take him to the emergency room. After doing tests and imaging I was told that Egg has something lodged in his intestines and needs surgery in order to save his life. The surgery is very costly and I cannot pay for it without help. My only other options would be to surrender him to the Humane Society or to euthanize him.&nbsp;</p><div>Egg is my best friend. I got him when I was suffering with my own illness last summer. He is my therapy cat and he means the world to me. Any donation would be helpful.
