<div>Gladys Books &amp; Wine is named after my grandmother, Gladys Dockery. She was a sharecropper from Mississippi who didnt get past the 5th grade but was also the person who breathed life into my dreams and encouraged my early love of reading. She was the kind of woman who made room for everyone (literally everyone) at her table. That's what I wanted to build in Bed-Stuy: a home for Black feminist and queer literary culture, a place where folks could find themselves on our shelves and in each other's company.

<div>We've been dealing with repeated flooding in our basement, and it isn't a one-time accident. It's a pattern. Each storm brings new damage, and we've spent months trying to get our landlord to take it seriously and make the repairs that are their responsibility. That cooperation hasn't come. Meanwhile, the water keeps coming back, because Bed-Stuy itself sits in a part of Brooklyn that is increasingly prone to flooding. Aging infrastructure, overwhelmed drainage, and a changing climate mean storms that used to be rare are now routine. We are not the only small business living this reality, but we are determined not to be one of the ones it closes down.

Rebuild Gladys Books & Wine After Flood Damage

On Sunday evening, I called an Uber to take me to the store, just a short distance from my home. As we left, a burgundy Jeep pulled out of my apartment complex and began to follow us. At first, I thought it was just a coincidence, but soon it became clear that the car was intentionally following us. My Uber driver and I tried to get away, but the Jeep chased us down, eventually leading us onto the highway and into Kansas. As we exited, the car started shooting at us. I was shot five times and we crashed. I am now in the hospital, fighting for my life, with air in my lungs and still recovering from my injuries.

 I just moved into this place in late February, hoping to build a safe home for my kids. Now, after this terrifying attack, we don’t feel safe at all. My kids are scared, and I don’t want to go back to our apartment. We have nowhere else to go, and I’m desperate to find a safer place for us to live. I don’t have a phone or much support, and this situation has left us feeling lost and vulnerable.

Help Qusay in Gaza feed his family and greater community

<div>Hi everyone. I’m creating this GoFundMe on behalf of a friend, Akiea “Ki” Gross (educator &amp; creator of Woke Kindergarten) who recently found out they need a second pelvic surgery in less than 12 months. 3 weeks ago, Ki learned that there is a solid, cystic mass that has rapidly grown and “overtaken” their left ovary. Because of the size, rapid growth and unknown nature of the mass, Ki’s only option to sustain their health is to have their entire left ovary removed. This procedure is medically referred to as a unilateral salpingo-oophorectomy.

<div>Last August, thanks to incredible support from community, Ki was able to finance &amp; receive laparoscopic excision surgery after suffering 20 years of chronic pain related to endometriosis. It completely changed their life &amp; they had been recovering well (and pain free!) up until about 6 weeks ago. Because Ki was very familiar with this pain, they were concerned that something was happening with their left ovary and sought care. That’s when scans surprisingly revealed the rapidly growing nature of the mass.

<div>As you can imagine, this news has been a very stressful &amp; upsetting disruption for Ki, who in addition to the incredible pain they are experiencing, has been blacklisted, doxxed, harassed, received death threats &amp; has had their work contracts terminated as a result of their work with Woke Kindergarten this year.

<div>After contacting several doctors across multiple states, they were able to secure a surgery date with their original surgeon for next Tuesday, June 4th. Unfortunately, this is surgery is out of network so on Ki’s behalf, please consider helping to lighten the monetary load by supporting them in financing the surgery &amp; contributing to their post-care during recovery while they’re unable to work. The surgery is quickly approaching and Ki needs support.

Ki Needs an Urgent Second Surgery

<div>When I started this fundraiser in January 2024, my dear friend Mohammed Almzainy and his wife Shahd were expecting their first child. Since then, their darling baby girl has been born and, thanks to the help of generous donors from around the world, is healthy and doing well. During the brief ceasefire, she was able to receive her first polio vaccine. (She will need 2 more in the coming months to be fully immunized.)

<div>Mohammed and Shahd were in the midst of earning their master’s degrees when the events of last October interrupted their studies and destroyed their home. Over the past year, they’ve been forced to relocate at least half a dozen times as home after home has become uninhabitable from the bombing. Mohammed’s mother and two sisters have had to live in tents, moving first to Rafah and then evacuating to central Gaza. All 6 members of the family are now together, sleeping on the floor in the living room of a 3-bedroom, 1-bathroom house they share with 14 other people in Dier al-Balah in central Gaza.

<div>This summer, despite the chaos, both Mohammed and Shahd managed to resume their studies via the internet. They need to walk a mile to get a decent connection, and ten miles to get a connection strong enough to let them take their exams. Shahd has just submitted her thesis, and Mohammed plans to submit his in the next month. Their future is uncertain, though, in terms of work. No one can leave Gaza yet, and the internet is not reliable enough for a full-time, long-distance job — even if you can find a company that will hire people living in Gaza right now.

<div>Mohammed’s older sister was accepted to a university in Qatar, but has had to delay acceptance until the Israeli government allows her to leave. His younger sister, age 9, is being home schooled by family members because no elementary schools remain standing. It’s hard to obtain school supplies like textbooks, writing paper, or pencils for her, but they are trying to teach her what they can so she doesn’t fall too far behind.
</div>

<div>Shahd and baby are healthy despite the conditions. There is sewage running in the streets, and clean water is difficult to find. Bottled water is now 10 times its price before the conflict, and even non-bottled water (which is not safe enough for Shahd, who is breast feeding, and her baby to drink) is 3 times the price it was before. Farmland has been destroyed and food stocks have been depleted, so the family is relying on whatever expensive canned food they can find.

<div>Medical care is almost non-existent, and Mohammed’s mother is still waiting for the surgery she has needed for the past year. People with urgent medical needs are being asked to bring their own medical supplies to the hospital, and family members are often required to assist doctors with procedures.
</div>

<div>Mohammed and Shahd have managed to keep the bulk of donated funds in reserve for exit fees in the hopes that they will be permitted to leave Gaza soon. However, as the conflict continues funds are increasingly needed for their basic survival. No one imagined that the Rafah exit would not only be closed, but that all the roads and buildings leading up to the Egyptian border would be completely burned and demolished. No one imagined the conflict would last this long with no end in sight.

<div>Thanks to your generosity, Mohammed was able to purchase a solar panel that has proved indispensable to their family. With it, they can power a 30-watt fan to keep the baby comfortable in 90 - 100 degree heat. If they alternate usage, the panel also allows them charge their cell phones so they can complete their university studies. Mohammed and Shahd are so grateful to you for making this possible for them.

<div>In January, we estimated for 2 months worth of expenses. Thankfully, your donations have allowed them to survive for an additional 7 months. We’re hoping you’ll continue to donate what you can to help them through whatever time remains.

<div>Costs are more exorbitant each day. For example, before the conflict, 3 potatoes cost about 55 cents. Now they cost the equivalent of $41. Fresh food is almost impossible to find, so the family relies mostly on canned goods. A single can of fava beans costs more than $5. There’s no work to help them afford to buy food, so your donations are the only way they are able to survive. They are so thankful for your help.

<div>To get the funds to Shahd, Mohammed, and their family, I transfer donations from my bank account in the US to Mohammed’s bank account in Gaza. There are no ATMs left standing, but Mohammed is able to access the funds by going to the bank when possible. The fees at the time of transfer are 12%, and Mohammed pays additional 8% fees as well as providing ID and extensive paperwork to collect the funds. Despite the high fees, we have found this to be the most cost-effective, secure, and efficient way to get the funds to Shahd and her baby.

<div>Originally, Mohammed and Shahd had 9 family members (including themselves and their baby) in Gaza. Just before the Rafah crossing was destroyed, 3 members of their family were able to leave. Now Mohammed is trying to keep about $52,000 USD in reserve for travel expenses for the remaining members of their family (Mohammed, Shahd, their baby, his mother, and his two sisters) to have ready if they are allowed to exit.

California has neglected its catastrophic housing affordability and homelessness crisis for years, with our civic leaders prioritizing large scale hotel developments, offering billions in incentives to developers. Now, with the COVID-19 virus grounding the entire world, hundreds of thousands of hotel rooms sit empty while the government continues to deny thousands of unhoused Californians the right to shelter in place. <br /><br />Here in Oakland, at least 1500 hotel rooms are sitting empty while COVID-19 infections are starting to spread through curbside communities - where folks are forced to share the few portapotties and handwashing stations that volunteers have been able to install. And this outbreak will not be contained in encampments, as unhoused folks do not live in a vacuum. Yet, the City of Oakland continues to make the same lame excuse that they’ve been peddling for months: They don’t know how to run a “full service program”. But unhoused folks don’t want to be programmed: “Just give us a bed and private bathroom. When we can rest and stay clean, we can take care of our lives just fine by ourselves.”<br /><br />So The Village of Oakland, East Oakland Collective, and Love and Justice in the Streets have launched a program following this principle of self-determination: With community funding we have moved 31 Black elders, veterans, families with children, and particularly immune vulnerable folks into hotel rooms across Oakland. These new hotel communities can now safely receive the same services that our volunteers deliver to curbside communities: hot meals donated by restaurants, grocery bags from the food bank, personal hygiene supplies, visits by volunteer medical professionals, unhoused service providers, and advocates who support self-organization. <br /><br />To continue and extend this program, all we need is to pay the hotel bill: It takes $700 to immediately shelter a couple or family for a week. We are Elle Pierre and Ashley Simpo - two moms raising kids in Brooklyn, NY.<br /><br />We met through social media back in 2016 and formed a friendship over the biggest thing we have in common - motherhood. Since then, we have been in constant conversation about motherhood. As we built our friendship, we each recognized that we’re part of a group that is vastly underrepresented: Black mothers who are consciously parenting. We are Black mothers who are breaking generational cycles and making hard choices every day to raise children who feel supported and loved.<br /><br />We came to realize that authentic conversation about what to expect while parenting was hard to come by, as many of our peers are struggling themselves to figure it out. Millennial parenting is a new territory that most of us navigate with little to no preparation from our elders. We are learning what motherhood is through trial and error and partnered or not, we often feel alone in this experience. We recognized that our fellow millennial mothers also shared a need to be a part of this growing conversation and so we created Livingwomb.
