<div>In early December, Chaunty went to the ER with pain in her chest and neck. Hoping it was something innocent like exhaustion or stress, she reluctantly paid for blood tests. The results came back with an alarmingly high white blood cell count indicating that she needed to be referred to a specialist for a CT scan. The CT scan confirmed she had a growth on her thyroid. The biopsy appointment confirmed she has cancer. And finally, the most recent doctor’s appointment confirmed that the cancer has metastasized to her lungs and possibly her lymph nodes.

<div>It has been a harrowing experience. She will need to have surgery to fully remove her thyroid and the cancerous mass, she will need to have some of her lymph nodes removed so they can be tested for cancer, and once she is recovered from that surgery, she will need to begin radiation treatment to eradicate the cancer in her lungs.

<div>She’s struggling to find a doctor that will accept her insurance provider in order for her to proceed with all of the phases of the treatment. It is a full-time job calling into doctors offices and fielding calls from her insurance company. This is a level of exhaustion she has never experienced before and the journey has only just begun.

<div>Once treatment is scheduled and the procedures are underway, we are all confident she will fully recover. She has a great mindset and is very hopeful in the outcome. Any help you can offer her is immensely appreciated. The money raised will support her and pay for her growing expenses while she takes some time away from running her business so she may fully focus on healing. Chaunty's Fight Against Thyroid Cancer

One of the harder sentences I have tried to write. Those of you that are reading this either know the Waylands or you know someone that knows them. If you are the latter group, I encourage you to ask for a story from them about Kevin or Jenna.  For me Kevin is one of my best friends. He is a man that despite his large frame contains an even larger heart. He is one who has no adversaries because you can't but love him. <br /><br />I created this page because they need help. Jenna is and has been fighting cancer for more than a year. She is now in the throws of a very aggressive progression of metastatic cancer that has no cure. Kevin has been furloughed from his job for months. Jenna has not been able to work for several months. The money raised will go to Kevin and Jenna to help relieve financial stress of paying rent, buying food, clothes for their two girls etc, etc. <br /><br />Please give what you can and if you are unable to give, please share with possibly someone who can. $5 or $50 it all adds up. This is my husband, Jeff. He is the LOVE of my life. I affectionately call him “handsome” (because he is!) and because he has the most alluring blue eyes that draw you into his beautiful heart and soul. <br /><br />We met in Dallas, Texas on a blind date, December 6, 1990. I was a single mother to my five year-old daughter, Kandis, and he a single father to his five year-old son, Christopher. It was through our children we met, fell in love and blended our families. Three years later we gave birth to our daughter, Hanna. <br /><br />In 1994, Jeff’s career brought him back to his birthplace, the state of Washington and we have made the greater Seattle area our home for almost 23 years. With the children reared and gone, we sold our family home and last summer downsized to a tiny, 100 year old craftsman overlooking Puget Sound and snow capped mountains; a longtime dream of ours. It is a place for family and friends to gather, to watch sunrises and sunsets, to raise our grandchildren, to hold hands, grow old and tired together. We have found our heaven on earth. <br /><br />On January 13, 2017, our family received devastating news. We learned that, at the young age of 55, Jeff has a malignant colorectal tumor with metastasis to his liver. After many medical exams, blood draws, pathology and CT/MRI scans, images revealed multiple large masses in his liver, as well as suspicious nodules in his lungs. The cancer is stage IV and his liver, at this time, is considered non-resectable.<br /><br />In the blink of an eye, our lives have been turned upside down as the quest to save Jeff’s life begins. His diagnosis is daunting and his prognosis is grim, but we are relentless in our efforts to ensure the best treatment and care so that he is cured. We've asked ourselves, “Why? Why this wonderful man who lives every day selflessly and puts his loved ones at the center of his existence?”<br /><br />As a freelance Sound Recording Engineer for TV, film and video, Jeff has spent the last 23 years building his reputation and scope of work, predominantly in the Pacific Northwest. Many of you have heard fascinating stories of his work with the Seahawks/NFL; TV coverage and interviews with celebrities, musicians, U.S presidents, corporate CEOs and athletes that have aired on NBC, CBS, ABC, MSNBC; documentaries for the Travel Channel, National Geographic, Discovery, The Food Network, A&amp;E, and NOVA. <br /><br />While Jeff’s career is exciting and has taken him all over the world, freelance work means he doesn't have any company benefits, paid sick time off, vacation or disability. If he is unable to work, he does not receive any wages. With this major medical setback and the grueling road ahead of aggressive chemo providing hope of resectable surgery (or surgeries), there will be a significant loss of income. While we are optimistic about Jeff’s treatment and care (and God-willing, a cure), his greatest concern is the ability to continue to work and provide for us while battling this aggressive cancer. <br /><br />It isn't easy to bare the harsh reality that we need financial help, but our children and I are humbly requesting donations to help ease Jeff’s angst if, or when, has to turn down work. Every dollar will help pay for our medical deductible, parking for medical appointments, treatments not covered by insurance (Jeff is a probable candidate for Hepatic Arterial Infusions at Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center in New York), and any other unexpected expenses to come. It may even be necessary for basic needs. <br /><br />We are grateful for our family and friends who are praying for us, offering help with anything and everything, and who are fighting this monster alongside us. I never imagined I'd be writing this, but my big brother needs us now more than ever. In September, Gary was diagnosed with lymphoma. At 48 years old, his whole world turned upside down and for someone like Gary, that world was always meant to be lived outdoors, fully, and freely. He had to move back home to my mother's house in Washington from Mexico for treatment, leaving his life behind for his health. Growing up, Gary protected me and was the person I always went to first. Now it's my turn to be there for him. Throughout his life, he's faced struggle after struggle and overcome every single one with determination and fight. He's a hiker, a surfer, an outdoorsman whose soul comes alive on the trails and in the water. He's caring, loving, and would do anything for anyone without a second thought. Now he's facing the biggest fight of his life, one that he can't overcome on his own. Our family rallied around him immediately—his 25-year-old son even moved back to Washington just to be closer to his dad during this battle. Gary will turn 49 on March 18th—a birthday we're desperately praying to celebrate together. Just when we thought we could see the light at the end of the tunnel, we received crushing news: the chemotherapy isn't working. The end date Gary had been holding onto—just three weeks away when he could finally go home and be reunited with his dog—has vanished. Instead, he's facing more biopsies and a completely new treatment plan. We don't know how much longer this fight will last. For a man who has spent his life hiking mountains and riding waves, being locked inside, weak and sick, has been torture. What worries us most isn't just the physical toll—it's his mental health. Watching someone so active, so alive, be reduced to lying in bed is devastating. The financial stress is pushing him to the breaking point. He feels horrible relying on my mother, myself, and even his son, who is barely getting by on his own. He's traveling back and forth to Seattle for treatment, getting weaker with each round of chemo, yet still worrying about: Paying his rent and bills when he can't work Caring for his beloved dog during treatment Affording food to keep his strength up Managing mounting medical costs Gary deserves to focus on surviving.
