<p>I love the African Proverb, <strong>"If you want to go fast, go alone. If you want to go far, go together."</strong> I believe in the power of the collective. I believe that--together--we have the ability to be and create and share all the goodness this world has to offer and all that is good within us. <br /><br />For those of you who don't know Mr. B (left) we adopted this 26-lb. 2-year old Tabby cat in August 2019 from Morris Animal Refuge in Philadelphia. His adoption photo from the Refuge made quite the buzz, and Morris received more than 3,000 applications, their website crashed, and news outlets from around the globe all wanted more Mr. B. <br /><br /><img src="https://d2g8igdw686xgo.cloudfront.net/47745562_1588185119563619_r.jpeg" width="100%" media_type="3" alt="47745562_1588185119563619_r.jpeg" /><br /><br />My boyfriend Chris and I have been blessed to add him to our home, which we lovingly refer to as The Fur Farm. We now have six cats, Mr. B, Buist, Boonce, Melky, Dodger, and Oliver, and as we've shared Mr. B and our Furmers, as we call them, and our home and our lives with the rest of the world, we've noticed a common thread over and over and over again:<br /><br />Mr. B makes people REALLY happy. Like, unexplainably happy. <br /><br />We've asked: Is it his face? His eyes? His cheeks? His demeanor? His size? No one can quite pinpoint The Thing, but we all know one thing: We love him and he makes us happy. <br /><br />And so while Mr. B makes people happy, I've often wondered, What more could we be doing to help as many adoptable cats as possible find good homes, and how can we support the people and organizations that make it possible for us to find our furry soulmates?<br /><br />I had a dream the other night we--you and I--raised $20K and found people and organizations and causes to support in this time of uncertainty...a means by which you and I, hand in hand, can collectively reach out together and help those who need it most. <br /><br />Your donation, however big or small, will contribute to Mr. B's Acts of Kindness. We will divvy 100% of the funds raised into smaller amounts to give to those whose lives, livelihoods, work, or world's have been upended because of COVID-19. <br /><br />Alone, I can make a small donation here and there. There is SO much GOOD WE can do

This is not something that I normally would do, but given the situation I could really use some help.  Six days ago we received a call that there was a stray kitten living under the front steps of someones house in South Philly.  My husband and I rushed right over to grab her.  When I finally was able to reach her to pull her out, she was terrified and a giant roach came out with her.  She was filthy, covered in fleas and flea dirt and VERY skinny.  We wrapped her in a towel and she started to purr.   <br /><br />We got home and bathed her, pulled fleas off of her, gave her flea medication and food.  She barely touched her food.  She weighed 1 lb 15 oz.  For her age and size, she should be at least 4 lbs.  For 2 days I couldn't get her to eat very much.  I force fed, I gave subcutaneous fluids, and she was still lethargic.  She was however in great spirits and purring like crazy, wanting human love at all times.  We took her to the vet on day 3 and she got up to 2 lbs, but still wasn't hungry.  She tested negative for felv/fiv and there was nothing overtly wrong on her exam.   We decided on an appetite stimulant which helped, but she was vomiting most of what she ate. <br /><br />On Saturday July 4th I saw that she vomited breakfast and when I picked her up she had some poo stuck to her.  When I tried to pull it, it was attached to hair.  A lot of hair.  I pulled out about 4 inches and then the rest was stuck.  It looked like she ate a piece of a hair weave on the street. So at that point I knew there was an obstruction (damn!!) I gave her some baby food with Miralax hoping that she could pass whatever was stuck, but she just vomited the food up.  Given that it was a major holiday (of course) we took her to VSEC that night so that they could confirm she needed exploratory surgery to remove the obstruction.  She stayed overnight, got IV fluids, 2 sets of xrays, some bloodwork, and they quoted me $3500-$4000 for everything(which is very high).  They weren't sure if they could dislodge with multiple enemas (they couldn't) - they just wanted to be sure she needed surgery since she is only 2 lbs.   By Sunday she still hadn't had the surgery and the bill was getting higher.  And they said they would operate that afternoon. <br /><br />Luckily City Cat Vet stepped in and offered to do emergency surgery that day if I transferred her over.  We picked her up from VSEC, took her to CCV and she had a more complicated surgery.   It turns out tat she did indeed eat a weave and it was lodged in her intestines and perforated her bowel.  She had to have 6-8 inches of intestine removed because the weave was so imbedded  in the tissue.  Poor tiny girl!!!!!  She stayed overnight and I picked her up yesterday to recover in our house.  She is eating and purring but has a long recovery - she goes back in for bloodwork on Friday because her white cell count was elevated and she was anemic.   <br /><br />So in the middle of a pandemic when I have only really been working like normal for a few weeks, I had to pay $2957.20 in vet bills for a kitten that I have had for 5 days.  I don't normally ask for financial help with fosters, but these are special circumstances where I haven't worked like normal since March and this was quite a hefty bill (plus there's more to come). Since January 2015, my parents have been living their dream of exploring the vast and varied landscapes of North America in their trusty van. They have always had an adventurous spirit, and their travels have taken them from the green forests of the Pacific Northwest to the white sandy beaches of South Florida, and everywhere in between. Their journey has been filled with beautiful memories, new friends wherever they go, and the simple joy of living on the open road.

<div>Their van is not just a means of transportation; it is their home, their refuge, and their constant companion. It has kept them warm during chilly nights in the Rockies, sheltered them from summer storms in the Midwest, and provided a cozy retreat after long days of exploring national parks and hidden gems. Each dent, scratch, and sticker on the van told a story of their travels, a testament to the countless miles they had journeyed. They had been to all 48 contiguous states in the first five years of travel.

<div><strong>Setbacks Have Never Stopped Them</strong>

<div>In March 2020, they were in Arizona headed to Alaska when the pandemic stopped them in their tracks, and they eventually headed back east. Last summer, in hopes of making it to Alaska, they put in a new engine, and that engine failed. Did that stop them? No. They put in yet another engine and on May 27, they were once again headed west to <strong>The Last Frontier</strong>.

<div>Wildfires in Canada slowed them down, but on June 13, they finally made it to Alaska, a destination they had been dreaming about for years. The excitement of seeing the majestic wildlife and historic landmarks was palpable. However, their joy was short-lived as tragedy struck. Just one week after making it to Alaska, their beloved van caught fire, and despite their best efforts, the engine was completely ruined.

<div>Now, they are stranded in Alaska, frustrated, heartbroken, and in need of assistance to not only continue their journey, but also to ensure they have a safe place to sleep. The van was not just a vehicle; it was their home and it represented their freedom and their way of life. Losing it has been a devastating blow, and they need our help to get back on the road. Patience and funds wane as they sit in a motel room trying to get insurance adjusters to call and for their claim to be handled so they can figure out their next move. I know I speak for all of my brothers and sisters (Charlie, Lisa, Penny and Jimmy), when I say we just want them to have a safe place to live. And that may mean needing to get them and their belongings back home in Pennsylvania, until they can find and purchase a new van. <strong>Some of the funds may go toward room and board while looking for a new van. </strong>
