The School of the Deaf in Kabul is one of just a very few deaf schools in Afghanistan. For over 20 years Parween Azimi and Abdul Gafar have been working tirelessly to educate deaf children in Afghanistan. The School of the Deaf is run by the deaf. Abdul Gafar, the school’s director, is deaf and blind. The school trains and employs individuals who were once students, half of the teachers are deaf themselves so empathy and understanding run deep. The global pandemic has reduced the amount of development resources available to places like Afghanistan. Funding for this school will run out in December 2020. Our goal is to expand, improve and stabilize operations of the school for years to come. Our fundraising goal is $20,000 USD. 100% of our goal will go directly to the school in Kabul. The funds will be used in a number of ways. - Teaching materials. Writing, drawing and painting materials and books. If we exceed our first fundraising goal then projectors, screens and tablets. - Establish after school programs including art, life-skills, literacy, and IT. Establish child and youth-led organizations (sport clubs, junior farmer clubs and disaster response teams).          - Renovate classrooms. Winter can be very cold in Afghanistan and none of the classrooms have heat. We will install rugs and carpets in the class rooms for the younger children so they can be more comfortable during nap time. - Transportation of 50 income-poor Deaf children to and from school. The school provides transport for children who live in more remote areas. Some children travel as much as two hours each way to attend the school. - Renovation of the school grounds to include a school garden for both recreation and learning purposes. - Production of 500 printed and visual sign language dictionaries. Any additional funding and resources will be used to expand above programs and support the school’s strategic goals of increasing outreach to wider regions of Afghanistan and to provide resources, such as vocational training, for deaf people of all ages. — I’ve been working in Afghanistan since 2004. The school is operational for girls and boys for grade 1-6, and for boys grade 7 and above, while we are still waiting for older girls to get permission to study. The funds raised will make a big difference in these childrens lives especially right now. We are not giving up hope of providing education to all our students however we can. We are sending a team to the school next week to get more detailed information. UPDATE Friday 20th 2021. Thanks for all the messages, it's very hard for me to reply given my current situation in Kabul. The school will continue to educate the children and will be open in the next few days, perhaps sooner. After being closed for most of the summer the children were back in school last Sunday [August 15th]. With the funds already raised we were able to deliver stationaries and crayons and had a workshop about the environment for 60 children. I was on my way to the school when the whole city went into gridlock as the Taliban approached. I had to turn around for security reasons and the last few days has been chaos. This school however will continue to be open.

Due the recent Shelter in Place order to prevent the spread of COVID-19, we are closing The San Mateo Zoo until further notice. 

We’re a small business that houses independent contractors and when we can’t provide our services, we don’t get paid. That is an inherent risk of being self-employed. This global pandemic is something none of us saw coming and unfortunately isn’t covered by insurance. Yet here we are, all trying our best to stay positive, to support our families and to support our community by doing what is being asked and by doing what is right: staying home and by doing so, keeping others safe. 

The barbershop is more than just a place to get your haircut. It’s a community, a respite for so many, a place where people come to feel good about themselves and to connect with each other. We don’t want to lose this special place. In order to ensure we have a place to provide services when the shelter in place is lifted, we are asking for your help. 

All funds raised will go towards paying the shop bills that will not be met due to our inability to work for you, our customers. 

This is a challenging time for us all. The community’s health and safety is our highest priority.

The San Mateo Zoo COVID-19 #SmallBusinessRelief

<img class="not-resizeable" src="https://d2g8igdw686xgo.cloudfront.net/40928760_1564265750938700_r.jpeg" alt="" width="100%" />￼You may know Joey Guila as one of the Bay Area’s favorite entertainers/comedians. He has rocked the stage for over two decades, bringing a ton of joy and laughter to many.   He is a great example of how one can use his talent to make an impact on other people’s lives.  He has supported many of us throughout his career by sharing the gift of laughter. What many of you may not know is that he is a three-time cancer survivor. While in remission, he was inspired to make people laugh for a living.  In a previous interview, Joey stated that, “I want to do comedy, and I also want to heal people because I think comedy is very healing. It made me forget about what I was going through."     In July 2019,  Joey Guila’s health was struck by a whirlwind of events, forcing him in and out of the hospital four times within a month. This series of events led to Joey being diagnosed with autoimmune hemolytic anemia. The cause of this disease is unknown.  This condition is characterized by a malfunction of the immune system which causes the premature destruction (hemolysis) of red blood cells at a rate faster than they can be replaced. Joey’s blood tests show that he has very low hemoglobin resulting in less oxygen flow to his organs which is very serious.  Unfortunately Plan A which included high doses of Prednisone didn’t work. Plan B, which involved a combination of Rituxan (a type of antibody therapy)and IVIG was challenging due to a delay in insurance authorization and a nationwide shortage of IVIG. Due to Joey’s constant drop in hemoglobin, he was told that the only option at this point would be to have surgery to remove his spleen which is a key organ for the immune system.  On July 23, 2019, Joey had his spleen removed. This is just the beginning of his road to recovery. Although his spleen was removed, he would still like to explore the underlying cause. Given the positive response his body has had with alternative medicine while battling cancer, he is looking to take this route as it has saved his life in the past.  As we come together as a community to help Joey, we should help him through these difficult times just as he has helped many of us.   We need your help to support Joey’s alternative medicine treatments not covered by his insurance. These expensive treatments include: Ozone Therapy, Myer’s Drips, IV Vitamin C, and supplements.   More than likely, Joey will have to continue alternative medicine treatments for the rest of his life. Our initial goal is to raise $25,000 to help cover expenses for these treatments immediately after surgery.   Joey has a saying, which is ““To Laugh is to Live, so Live Long and Keep Laughing”. We owe it to him to be there for him just as he’s been there for us.  We need to make sure that he’s around to bring more laughter and joy for years to come.   Thank you for reading Joey’s story. Bryce has recovered at an amazing rate. Part of her recovery includes swimming. Bryce turns out to have an incredible talent for swimming competitively.  She now has a goal of competing in the Paralympics. This is not just a dream. Both Bryce's coaches and the Olympic scouts feel she has a real shot at making the US Paralympic Team. Her current lap times are on par with qualifying times for the summer games. The Paralympics take place shortly after the able bodied Olympics every 4 years. Bryce started out training with the Yucaipa Swim Team located in Southern California which required her to spend a minimum of 10 days per month training with the team in Southern California. The travel and being away from home took a huge toll on all of us.  Luckily in the Spring of 2016 Bryce was able to join the Albany Armada Aquatics located here in Northern California with Coach Helen Garcia at the helm.  Between the guidance Coach Helen has given and the proximity of the team Bryce is able to practice at least 5 days a week and even manages to get a morning and afternoon practice in several times per week. As a result she has improved at a staggering rate. She has been ranked both nationally and internationally by the International Paralympic Committee. All this took quite a bit of travel, training and commitment on both Coach Helen and Bryces  part. Luckily they were up to the task. We found out earlier this month that Bryce did not make Team USA for 2016 Paralympics in Rio but the Alternates  have not been announced yet so there is still that possibility. In the meantime we are re-focused on going to Tokyo in 2020. Coach Helen is encouraging Bryce to swim in as many meets as she can to help her be as prepared as possible. We continue to travel quite a bit as well as competing  in local meets and the costs can be astronomic. Any and all contributions are greatly appreciated.
