<div>Ali is a beloved part of her camp and island communities—someone who shows up for others again and again. Now it’s our turn to show up for her.

<div>Living on Orcas Island means weekly trips to Seattle for treatment, along with missed work and time away for both Ali and George until August. The logistical and financial strain adds up quickly.

<div>While Tina is recovering from a serious surgery, Bill has had a medical emergency that had her in hospital overnight (that alone cost over 5,000$). Bill has been diagnosed with congestive heart failure…. She is still with us and we would like her to have the medication needed to keep her with Tina as long as we can.

<div>Right now, we are trying to lessen the financial stress and offset initial medical costs so that they can both focus on healing.

<div>Molly has been on Lopez Island for many years, but is now forced by medical issues to live in a care facility off-island. I have known Molly and husband John (deceased 2015) since we moved here in 2006. I know many Lopezians love her too. She and John produced silver fiber-working tools and jewelry, and Molly and I started poetry and fiction writing groups. She often read her poetry and writing at events on the island. She wrote a book on Celtic Knots that was well received.

<div>Due to a recent stroke (she's doing reasonably well) she was taken to Anacortes. From the hospital, she was transferred to a full-care facility, and remained there for a number of weeks, and was sent home. She had a fall in her apartment, alone. Now she is back in the full-care facility, but has been billed several thousand dollars for the days it took to get her approved. She will be able to move to a much nicer assisted-living facility, run by the same company, but not until the bill is paid. Until then, she is in what is essentially a hospital room.

<div>Her sister came out from the East Coast to help Molly. She has assisted with getting the apartment on Lopez cleared out (Molly cannot live there alone), and storing the items Molly cares about most, until the move to assisted living is accomplished. Her sister has spent several thousand dollars of her own money for the trip. There are other bills to be paid as well. I am setting the target amount here to $9,000 to cover the medical expenses, and the moving and other expenses.

Help Molly Overcome Medical Hurdles

<div>Having served our community as a EMT-paramedic (Chris) and EMT-B (Rita) for decades, Chris and Rita Elliott now need our help. They retired to Costa Rica but had to return permanently to the U.S. for ongoing medical care. Both are now disabled with progressive diseases and lack the financial resources to cover that care. Rita requires 24 hour supervision which Chris, with advanced Parkinson's Disease, is no longer able to provide. In his devotion to Rita's care, Chris has exacerbated his own health problems, which can't continue. She is currently in the hospital in Bellingham and needs a respite stay while a long-term care solution is put together by social workers on the case.

<div>The kind of facility Rita requires (locked dementia care) is expensive, somewhere around $10,000 for a 30 day stay. This is an evolving situation, complicated by the inadequacies of our current system in its treatment of ill elders without adequate financial resources. Legal help will also be needed to obtain legal guardianship for Rita and to protect what resources they do have.

<div>We are asking for donations to cover their current medical and legal needs. Chris and Rita gave of themselves for years and we are appealing to the community to help them in return.
