<div>Shortly before 6PM on Friday, October 18th, Taz's world was flipped upside-down in a completely inconceivable way and with absolutely no warning.

<div>He'd left his house just over an hour before what came next: a tragedy unfolding, in real time, in Gerlach- the place where people wait for October, because that's when things return to the quiet stolen over the course of Summer. He was at the office, around the corner from his home as dinner time neared when a concerned, local friend called him on the phone to inform him that his house was on fire. The first thing he did after arriving to his house was an attempt to go inside (before emergency personnel arrived) hoping to save his decades-long cat companion.

<div>Shortly thereafter, the town heard explosions as (presumed) propane tanks gave way to the heat. By the time most of us in town arrived, the fire department was already on site and the damage was immeasurable. At least two hours after the fire had been spotted, it still was incapable of being fully extinguished. Community members sat with Taz as he watched all of his earthly belongings turn to ash.

Help Taz Rebuild After Devastating Fire

It's hard to believe we've just entered October. In some ways, it feels like a lifetime ago when the restaurant industry got turned upside down. But here we are, eight months later surviving. And that is in no small part thanks to the kindness of people like you.  <br /><br />Your generosity helped us pivot our operations and gave our staff the ability to work again and take care of their families in a time when every bit helps. Your support has also been felt by Maria. You gave her the ability to pay for medical expenses and her rent as she goes through her treatment.<br /><br />As we move into fall, we find ourselves with an opportunity to bring back more staff by extending our outdoor dining area into the street. This opportunity not only would ensure the sustainability of The Hatch long term, but it would also allow us to bring back more staff and to hire additional staff as well. <br /><br />To make this opportunity a reality, we need to build wheelchair-accessible parklets in front of the restaurant and buy tables, chairs, and outdoor heaters. We've estimated the cost to be roughly 30K. <br /><br />Donations of $50 or more will be sent a Hatch T-shirt designed by local Oakland artists. Donations specifically earmarked for Maria will be given directly to her.<br /> <br />I can not overstate the impact your donations have had on The Hatch. The other day I found myself being chastised by our Cook for buying the wrong potatoes.
