<div>For those of you that know the Scheuermann family, you know that this tragedy could not have happened to kinder people. Karen and Neal bought the house last year as newlyweds, beyond proud to finally have a place to make theirs. The memories of the first year of their marriage were made within those walls—Neal quietly renovating as Karen tried to sleep from her night shifts as an ICU Nurse at Strong Memorial Hospital. But amongst the loss of a myriad of objects—their home, sentimental heirlooms, and all of their belongings—nothing resonates more deeply than the loss of their sweet boy, Boomer. He was the family baby; he was the four-legged family member that saved them when they were at their lowest. While no monetary gift could ever replace Boomer’s doofy love or all that was lost in the fire, Neal and Karen have a long road to recovery, with substantial incurring medical bills and finding a sense of normalcy admits their upturned life.

Rebuilding the Scheuermann Family’s Life

In June of 2006 Shawn was diagnosed with Stage 4B Hodgkin's Lymphoma. After several failed attempts with chemo they decided to try a stem cell transplant to attack his extremely aggressive Cancer. After a month he again relapsed confirming that the transplant had also been a failure. Next began round after round of radiation to new relapse sites as they arose. In between treatments and relapses Shawn's weakened immune system and body became subject to a myriad of other problems, blood infections, pneumonia, swine flu, kidney failure, actively bleeding ulcer, relapse in the bone requiring a permanent rod to be surgically placed in his leg to stabilize the fracturing bone, and a collapsed lung.<br /><br /><img class="not-resizable" src="https://2dbdd5116ffa30a49aa8-c03f075f8191fb4e60e74b907071aee8.ssl.cf1.rackcdn.com/7593325_1450033613.9388_funddescription.jpeg" alt="" width="100%" /><br />Kim, Shawn, and their family remained hopeful as no one had diagnosed him as terminal, and for the most part treatments seemed to help. That all changed this year... <br />In April Shawn began experiencing shortness of breath and after several trips to the hospital was diagnosed with Pulmonary Fibrosis brought on by his prolonged Cancer treatments. Sadly, this condition is untreatable. His lungs are hardening and their functionality continues to decline. He is not eligible for a lung transplant, nor would he survive the surgery if he was. At this point the doctors believed that Shawn had 6 months to a year to live. At the end of August his care was turned over to a Hospice team and Kim was forced to go on disability due to stress and anxiety as well as to be home with her husband.<br /><br /><img class="not-resizable" src="https://2dbdd5116ffa30a49aa8-c03f075f8191fb4e60e74b907071aee8.ssl.cf1.rackcdn.com/7593325_1450033653.8106_funddescription.jpeg" alt="" width="100%" /><br />Between them, Shawn and Kim have two daughters. Their oldest, Angel is 19. She graduated this year, but has postponed college in order to spend time with her dad. Their youngest, Mackenzie is only 10. She is a talented young dancer who regularly attends conventions and competitions, but with the current situation even that bit of normalcy is in jeopardy. At this point the family has no income coming in. They have tapped into 401k funds despite penalties and taxes to try and support themselves, but that is no longer enough. Funds are needed to help pay for medical expenses, daily household expenses, and monthly bills. The family is also facing the $7,500 expense of providing Shawn with funeral services when his time here ends. <br /><br />The Barkley family are not the type of people who ask for help. They are usually the ones who are helping others, no questions asked. Despite what they've been through they are standing strong and still smiling, grateful for one more Thanksgiving together and hopeful for one more Christmas as a family. <div>Hi, I am Aimee Coakley. I was diagnosed with breast cancer back in February of 2023, and that is when my life changed. I had chemo, a lumpectomy, and a breast reduction. Some of my lymph nodes tested positive, and I have HER2 positive, so I had a second surgery to remove most of my lymph nodes. Then, in 2025, I was diagnosed with my breast cancer moving to my brain. I had surgery to remove as much as they could near the brain stem, and I needed radiation on the rest. This was pushed back because I got an infection from the brain surgery, which led to another surgery, a drain, and removal of the mesh they put on during my brain surgery. This led to my husband taking more time off work, and we fell further behind on the bills. He did get FMLA pay for 2023, but nothing for 2025 to now. <strong>We are so behind on car payments, car insurance, and the car keeps breaking. Food is so highly expensive, and we buy what we can each week, but it is hard to afford everything with being a one-income family of 5.</strong> My mother-in-law tries to help, but we can't take too much from her. She is on a very strict income and has been diagnosed with bladder cancer and is getting treatment and having surgery. My brother-in-law tries to help, but he has to work and has a family. We live with her, so my husband loses more time off work, and it makes it hard on him. He wants to help both of us, and it has taken a toll on him. We have 3 kids, and he is the only person driving in the house. It has been really hard. I have chemo with no end date with it being stage 4. My mother-in-law does not know yet, but they said it can come back again. I am trying to help her, and she helps me. My sister and close friends are a huge help too, but they all have families too. It has been a long and difficult journey, and we are hurting financially. Until my disability is done and starts, it's been hard, and we have to live on one income for a family of 5. <strong>We only make like $48,000 this year, which is not enough for a family of 5 in this country. It's so hard.</strong>
