<div>My husband Koji is facing a life-threatening medical emergency while overseas in Japan. What was meant to be a meaningful family trip, bringing his mother back to Japan as a special gift, took a devastating turn when Koji suddenly became ill. He suffered severe complications with his lungs, which led to cardiac arrest and resulted in brain damage. Koji is now in intensive care in Yokohama at the Red Cross Hospital, unconscious and fighting for his life, surrounded by me and his mother and other family members. He has undergone surgeries and is on a respirator, with ongoing health complications that are ever changing.

<div>He loves his work at DaVita Dialysis in Redwood city, helping patients with their medical challenges with kidney care. As a nurse, he brings compassion and expertise to every patient he meets. Koji has a background in social work from UC Berkeley, where he earned a degree in social welfare and is a proud Cal Alumni, Go Bears! as he always says.

<div>Koji is also a cancer survivor himself, and he has dedicated his life to helping others who are struggling with their health. Prior, Koji was a Advisory Council Member for the Lucile Packard Children's Hospital Adolescent &amp; Young Adult Cancer Program, Camp Okizu supporting kids who are overcoming cancer and more.

<div>He has contributed and donated to the Japanese-American community including the Asian Pacific Islander Legal Outreach (APILO), and to numerous community efforts in Japantown SF.

<div>He is known for his generosity and his willingness to help others, never complaining and always facing challenges with quiet strength. Koji would never ask for help himself, so I am reaching out on his behalf, hoping to rally the same support and kindness he has shown to so many.

<div><strong>How the funds will be used for Koji's medical care:</strong>

<li>Current intensive care medical bills, including ICU, medications, scans, tests, and medical care at the Red Cross Hospital in Yokohama,

<li>Medical evacuation with medical staff onboard the flight back to the United States, once his condition has stabilized,
</li>
<li>Ongoing and significant expenses for his care, including medical care, tests, medications. There will be additional bills that are still unknown.

<li>Additionally, all bills must be paid before he can be discharged from the hospital.

<li>Insurance does not cover all these medical bills.

Koji Dedicated His Life to Helping Others: Now He Needs Us

<p>This gofundme has been set up to assist Mr. Li, the Asian man that intervened and stepped in to help attempt 2 thieves from robbing a woman's purse. He is a local good samaritan that saw what happened and wanted to help.

<p>Funds raised will be going to assist Mr. Li in recovery, medical bills, and expenses. Any additional funds leftover will be donated to a local charity or organization (we will share and post updates on which org he chooses to work with).

<p>Mr. Li was with his mom shopping when he heard the screams and jumped into action. He had a past government job where he learned active shooter training, so he knew how to approach the situation.

<p>He wanted to de-escalate the situation and unfortunately was shot twice.

<p>I wanted to calm everyone down it’s why I approached them. To try to deescalate the situation before it got out of hand but it got out of hand really really fast. Immediate action really needed to be required or someone else could be seriously hurt.

<p>I have no regrets of doing it. If <span>you were getting robbed think about your safety first, don’t think about your possessions. Those can always be replaced. Lives cannot be replaced. Always take the safest route.”</span>

<p>Over the weekend, a young Asian woman was targeted by 2 black male suspects with guns and a 3rd suspect in a getaway gold Honda Accord car in Chinatown, Oakland.

<p>Two couples were along 8th and Franklin getting boba Saturday afternoon when two men in ski masks grabbed the purse belonging to two of the women.

<p>One man in the group of 4 who wants to be identified only as “Mr. Chan” (he’s the one in the blurred photo) says “they pulled their shirts up and showed they have guns under their pants. Immediately we all froze.”

<p>Mr. Chan sprang into action and grabbed his girlfriend’s handbag and was pistol-whipped in the process.

<p>A good samaritan named Mr. Li jumped in to grab the other woman’s purse away from the suspects and was shot in the left armpit and right thigh. You can see in the dramatic cell phone video of his injuries.

<p>Mr. Li is currently resting in a hospital where he is recovering well and hoping to go home soon.

<p>This comes on the heels of attacks in Chinatown, like the two violent robbery attacks at 9th and Harrison in two days last month.

<div>[Started in a Clubhouse Room] The surge in anti-Asian violence in 2021, building on that in 2020 sparked by Covid, is alarming, often targeting the elderly and women. A gunman went on a shooting spree in Atlanta, murdering six Asian women and two others. A 64 year-old Vietnamese grandmother was assaulted in San Jose. On the same day a Filipino American slashed across the face on the subway. Last week, elementary teacher Matthew Leung was beaten until he got a concussion and lost a finger. Racism is maiming and killing us. Asian Americans are Americans too.

<div>Silence leads to more violence. The Asian American Federation is a non-profit that is directly TACKLING THE HATE CRIME issue head on through:

My son Jordan Evans' has been a competitive figure skater since the age of 8 with the University of Delaware Figure Skating Club. He is in the midst of an amazing 2013 competitive season. The first qualifying competition was the South-Atlantic Regional Competition this October in North Carolina. Jordan received a Silver Medal and qualified for the next competition - the Eastern Sectionals Championships. Jordan skated at the Eastern Sectionals where he also medaled and qualified for the Unite States Figure Skating Association US Championships. The US Championships are in Boston in January.
