<div>On the night of Thursday, August 10th 1989, my mother Rhys Pocan, a 35 year old Native American woman, was tragically taken from my family and community. While walking along National Ave in Milwaukee around midnight, she was abducted in an act of unimaginable violence.

<div>Her life was stolen, and her body was desecrated. Months later, hunters discovered her remains scattered across public hunting grounds in Wisconsin. Her head and hands were found in Vernon marsh, Waukesha county, and her torso in Nichols Creek, Sheboygan county. Decades later, her case remains unsolved leaving my family and community without the justice we deserve.

<div>I am launching this GoFundMe campaign to honor Rhys’ memory and to seek justice. The funds raised will be used to:

<div>i)	Skyway Bowl is the primary bowling facility for the City of Chicago Public School system. We host 32 schools within the CPS system as well as a few schools in the Catholic School League. This includes the hosting of reginal and state tournaments.

<div>ii)	We are a primary choice for fundraising events by multiple organizations throughout the city to include local churches, nonprofits, and the Divine 9 Black Greek Organizations.

<div>iii)	We host an annual Christmas toy and back to school supply drive for the children sponsored by select charities here on Chicago’s Southside.

<div>iv)	We also host leagues for the local fire and police departments in districts located on Chicago’s Southside. This builds camaraderie amongst these public forces.

<div>Although our business is generating enough income to stay open, we have been holding on by a thread operating month to month. It has been particularly has difficult since the beginning of the COVID-19 pandemic. We lost nearly half of our league revenues which are our primary source of revenue. Weekly Bowling leagues are the monetary lifeblood for our business and we want to raise awareness and money to help us grow and sustain our operations.

<div>Secondly, the antiquated property taxing system of Cook County assess our property taxes based on inflated property values. As a result, we are paying more than we should for property taxes because the real value of our property is much less than the assessed value at which our property taxes are based. This annual bill puts a strain on our income and makes it difficult for us to invest in the expansion of our operations.

We also want to spread awareness about the benefits of bowling to also increase adult and senior participation in our adult leagues. Bowling is an easily accessible sport for everyone and we want to promote the growth of this sport.

<div>The idea to make an audio book came from audiences during a book tour last fall to prisons, universities, bookstores, a museum, and a wellness center. <div>The first half of the book is Finn and my story of falling in love in a prison workshop, and the impact of the social turmoil and utopian aspirations of the times, the early 1970s. I am seeking two experienced, well known actors to read the chapters that Finn, an incarcerated participant, and I, co-facilitator of that workshop, wrote. Part II essays are written by five sets of other people deeply impacted by each other in other ways and spawned in prison theater workshops in Louisiana, New Zealand, Scotland, New York, and across the US. They will read their own chapters.

Voices from Prison Theater Workshops: an Audio Experience

<div>I’m reaching out on behalf of my girlfriend, Crystal, an independent artist and small business owner who pours her heart into creating beautiful stickers, stationery, and other artwork for anime conventions. Her art is all about childhood nostalgia, pet lovers, and generally cute, uplifting designs. Her work is not just a passion—it’s her livelihood.

<div>Recently, while preparing for a major convention in Orlando, she shipped a large box of her products to the hotel where she would be staying. This package contained thousands of dollars worth of her personally crafted creations, representing months of hard work. However, when she arrived, she was devastated to find that her box had been tampered with and its contents stolen either in transit or while in the hotel’s possession. The hotel has denied responsibility, and now she is left without both her products and the income she was counting on from the event. Unfortunately, they haven’t released their security footage to us but have claimed that her package was delivered in that condition, despite failing to notify her of the tampering/damage before her arrival. The only thing we can say with confidence is that the tears in the box appear more deliberate than accidental.

<div>We are in the process of filing a claim with UPS, but reimbursement is limited and unlikely to cover the full loss - if anything at all. That’s why I’m asking for your help. <strong>Every dollar raised will go toward helping her recreate lost inventory, cover travel expenses, and recover from this heartbreaking setback.</strong>

Help the JuiceBox Club Recover from a Devastating Loss

<div>On the evening of January 7th, as they returned from an evening walk, my fiancé, Brandon, and our six-year-old miniature schnauzer, Bart, were attacked by a stranger's pitbull mix 20ft from our front door.
</div>
<div><br />
</div>
<div>Upon hearing a serious commotion outside, I ran from our apartment and found my fiancé fiercely trying to protect our dog as a large black dog continued to bite and tear at Bart. I had no time to think and jumped in to help Brandon. The attacking dog's owner was present but was not helpful and at one point stood up and walked away saying, "F*** it, shoot the dog."
</div>

</div>
<div>Our neighbor ran outside and ultimately helped us pull the much larger dog away from Bart. At this point, Bart was bleeding profusely and clearly had severe wounds. There was no way one person could transport him to the hospital, so Brandon and I immediately applied pressure to the wounds we could and drove to the nearest emergency vet, MedVet Salt Lake City.
</div>

</div>
<div>Bart was rushed in under critical care, and we were placed in a waiting room. After being seen by the medical professionals, we were faced with the option of pursuing life-saving surgery or ethical euthanasia.
</div>
<div><br />
</div>
<div>I've tried to honor the severity of this attack without being gruesome, but the damage was extensive.
</div>
<div><br />
</div>
<div>Bart's skin on his back had been ripped from the muscle, he had two exposed hernias, and the doctors were not yet able to tell us if any internal organs had been damaged.
</div>
<div><br />
</div>
<div>Our pets are our family. We did not blink. We gave them the credit cards we had and asked them to save him by any means possible. We were rightfully devastated and traumatized. Not only was our beloved dog viciously mauled and nearly killed, but we had both witnessed something so horrific and gruesome... to hear your loved ones screaming... No one should ever have to go through that. It is something that will haunt us for the rest of our lives.
</div>

<div>Bart underwent extensive surgery, with more anticipated, but, by some miracle, no internal organ damage. One of the bites was 1/4 inch from hitting one of his kidneys. He has massive stitches along his back, legs, and belly, is currently on 7 medications, and has 3 JP drains that we've been monitoring and recording twice daily.
</div>

<div>He was able to come home Friday the 10th with a follow-up surgery scheduled for Tuesday the 14th.
</div>
<div><br />
</div>
<div>He is one tough dog with a very tough dad.
</div>
<div><br />
</div>
<div>Brandon suffered from several bites and visited a doctor after we got news of Bart's successful surgery.
</div>
<div><br />
</div>
<div>Our initial vet bill was $8,206. With the help of our immediate family we've been able to reduce this amount to $6,700, which includes Bart's second surgery. We are still waiting to hear what to expect moving forward.
</div>
<div><br />
</div>
<div>We are working with animal control, but unfortunately, we believe the attacking dog and owner are unsheltered. We have not been able to find them since the incident, but after I posted on the NextDoor app, we were told of another neighbor and their pup who were attacked, luckily not as severely, by the same dog. He was spotted in the area up to two days after the incident, but animal control was not able to find them. In SLC, animal control handles all dog attack incidents rather than the police. We are largely concerned as our neighborhood is right next to Liberty Park, which has massive amounts of dog traffic, and we don't want any other family to go through this. While trying to protect his 4yrs old sister, a piece of debris went through the car's windshield, piercing 10-year-old Andre Howard III in his head causing serious injuries. Now, Andre faces a long and difficult road to recovery.

Help 10 year old Andre Howard Recover After Plane Crash

<div><strong>Louvenia Jenkins is a survivor of the 2025 Pacific Palisades fire</strong> that saw her home of seventy-odd years and all her possessions reduced to ash. Louvenia Jenkins is a 97-year-old neighbor of the Pacific Palisades. She is one of the first individuals of African descent to own property in the Palisades, and certainly the first Black woman to be a homeowner in the neighborhood.

<div>Louvenia Jenkins was and is loved by many, having been an educator in Southern California for years, and a mentor to friends and family for many more years. Just last year, students at Santa Monica Community College made a documentary about her life and, equally as important, how she uplifted the lives of those around her. Not so long ago, she invested much of her personal wealth to create the UNCF scholarship #byLAforLA. Her investment funded the Richard L. Sykes Memorial Scholarship, named after her cousin. Starting in the 2019-2020 academic year, the Sykes Memorial Scholarship supported 25 rising first-year African American students who were residents of the greater Los Angeles area, through up to five years of college.
