<div>I’m taking care of a small feral cat colony of five beautiful black cats. I’m currently on a mission to buy a house so I can relocate all five cats to a safe, cat-enriched, enclosed back yard. My goal was to purchase by the end of the year, but that timeline has been escalated due to new neighbors with a reactive dog. They confronted me very aggressively for feeding the cats and I’m genuinely scared for the cats’ lives. The money from this fundraiser will go towards a down payment and creating a cat-proof area in the back yard for the feral colony.

<div>After Hurricane Helene left, we were lucky to find that our downtown spaces were dry, and our neighbors were alright as well. Also, as luck would have it, our local WiFi provider Skyrunner came back quickly, as did our power. We opened our doors to the community as a power and WiFi hub, with free hot food and resource sharing. The outpour of volunteer support to keep our spaces open and to aid the devastated region has been inspiring.

<div>This business has always been pretty DIY, with walls moved, built, and rebuilt, using and reusing recycled material all while hosting thousands of bands from all over the world. Financially, we keep things afloat and have created jobs in the process. Improvements made possible by COVID relief loans have resulted in a lot of growth as a venue, retail space, and facilitated an expansion next door with a bar and kitchen. At the point when the storm hit, we had just paid off the patio permit and big chunks of our loans, which left us in a particularly vulnerable place to be without income for the better part of a month.

Our lost revenue at two businesses has left us in a state where we cannot afford rent for much longer, neither can we afford the payroll costs to rehire staff.

Sustaining Static Age: A Call for Community Support

Due to orders given by the state governor, in response to COVID-19, all bars were forced to close their doors on 03/17/2020. We are still unsure of when we will be allowed to reopen. All businesses considered to be used strictly as "social outlets" were the 1st to close and they will be the last to reopen. We might be closed for up to 6 months before we are allowed to resume business. <br /><br />In Asheville, our busy season runs between March and September with a mild bump during "leaf season" Oct/Nov. We were just coming out of slow season when we were ordered to close. Our bartenders were just using the last of their savings during our slow winter and anticipating the higher tip percentage that spring and summer tourism brings. As of now, we can only speculate that we will have to forego our entire busy season before having to endure our slow winter season again -- with absolutely no savings. <br /><br />Burger Bar is Asheville's Oldest Bar. 2020 would be the 60 Year Anniversary. We are afraid we, not only, will not be able to celebrate this event but may have to close our doors permanently if the orders stay in place for the entirety of our "busy season". We have a very small staff of 6 people. However, we treat each other as family so losing our jobs would be devastating beyond just being out of work. If we raise enough funds to cover our expenses during the shutdown and are able to reopen our doors (thus "rehiring" employees) I will give the remaining amount to the staff so they can cover their personal expenses and help carry them through our slow season.<br /><br />Any and all donations are greatly appreciated. Not only by the Burger Bar staff-family but our customer-family, as well. People that we see everyday and who we have grown to know and love.
