<div>Mike was one of a kind, always the one laughing and joking with anyone and everyone he met. Being that person you went to if you needed anything. Wearing the badge with pride.

<div>He really embodied what it meant to be a wire.

<div>Our thoughts and prayers are with Sian, Jackson, Rowan, Millie and all his friends and family.

<div>This is Iris's story and the reason why I am walking 12 marathon's in 12 days starting on the 12th December 2023.
</div>

<div>On the 9th June 2022 family life changed forever for my nephew Matthew and his wife Sophie....
</div>

</div>
<div>Iris was born 10 weeks early and spent the first 6 weeks at Warrington neo natal receiving treatment for sepsis, jaundice, ultrasound brain scans and several lung puncture procedures. Iris came through and all seemed routine until day 19 when after an another routine ultrasound brain scan Iris was diagnosed with Periventricular Leukomalcia (PVL). This is a brain injury normally found in premature babies

<div>PVL is injury to the white matter of the brain which is responsible for transmitting information between the nerve cells and spinal cord, as well as from one part of the brain to the other.
</div>
<div><br />
</div>
<div>Iris‘ initial scan showed several cysts on the white matter of her brain which over the coming weeks joined together to form bigger cysts. PVL causes damage to the nerve pathways that control motor movements, resulting in muscles that are tight, spastic or resistant to movement. This, Matt and Sophie were told would very likely result in cerebral palsy for Iris along with potential learning difficulties and other developmental problems.

<div>Despite this devastating diagnosis Iris continued to thrive during her time in neonatal resulting in her being finally allowed to come home at 6 weeks old, 4 weeks earlier than her due date.
</div>

</div>
<div>Once home, it quickly became apparent the issues that PVL was causing for Iris. Matt and Sophie noticed that Iris was very stiff in her legs, this was something they noticed a week of her being home. Iris would straighten her legs out and raise them in unnatural positions. Although Matt and Sophie were told it was a ‘wait and see game’ it was expected and no less devastating to see the affects manifesting so early.

<div>On the 12th September at just 3 months old, Iris had an MRI scan which would give Matt and Sophie a clearer picture of the damage to her brain. As parents they naturally hoped for the best and at the same time unfortunately the scan confirmed the ultrasound results that Iris had PVL affecting both sides of her brain. It was confirmed she had Grade 4 cystic bilateral PVL.

<div>From the beginning, Matt and Sophie were informed about the importance of early intervention for Iris in terms of therapy and how it is essential in giving her the best opportunity for her brain to rewire which would optimize her physical and mental capabilities.

<div>So… That brings the story right up to date and where the family are 18 months into Iris’ journey. Iris had her diagnosis of cerebral palsy in February 2023 at 8 months old so the reason why I want to help Iris on her cerebral palsy journey is because of her need to have specialised equipment which aids very specific therapy to develop and improve Iris's motor functions. This we know will give Iris the best possible life moving forward.

<div>Sadly, most of the therapy and equipment Iris needs is not available through the NHS. This is why I am walking 12 marathons in 12 days
</div>
<div>(314 miles in total) to help Iris have the best possible start in life.
</div>
<div>To also raise awareness of the condition PVL and raise the funds required for the specialised equipment.
</div>

<div>Matt and Sophie would give the world to Iris and if there was anything more they could do they would. As a parent to see your child struggling and to picture their future as anything other than the happiest is something Matt and Sophie would not want for anyone.

<div>This is why I am taking on this walk and hoping to raise money, to give Iris the best possible chance to reach her full potential , living as happy and normal life as possible.

<strong>Whitey’s Battle against GBM</strong><br /><br /> On July 23rd 2016, our lives changed forever. My husband Stephen and I were on an anniversary weekend away in Belfast. But what was meant to be a celebration of 16 years of marriage, soon turned into a living nightmare. <br /><br /> We first noticed something was wrong during our first morning in Belfast, when Stephen suffered a seizure for the first time in his life. Within the space of a couple of hours, my husband had suffered three seizures, which lead to his lungs collapsing. <br /><br /> Stephen, who is just 43, was put into a medically induced coma and rushed to intensive care. A CT scan on his brain later highlighted a ‘mass’ on his left temporal lobe. <br /><br /><strong>Living with Glioblastoma (GBM)</strong><br /><br /> We later learned he had been living with a life-threatening brain tumour. The condition is called Glioblastoma (GBM) and is often referred to as “The Terminator”, due to its aggressive nature and resistance to current NHS medical treatment. The median survival rate is between six to 18 months from initial diagnosis. <br /><br /> The news was devastating for us as a family. We were a long way from our home in North West England, where family and friends were looking after our two sons, aged 14 and 5. In all my 24 years with Stephen, I’ve always known him to be a fit, healthy and hardworking husband and Daddy!  <br /><br /> A week after the initial seizure, Stephen was flown home from Belfast and then our journey at the fantastic Walton Centre began. Here Stephen had surgery to remove as much of the tumour as possible, 95% in fact. <br /><br /> Stephen has kept positive and has recovered well. Less than four weeks later, he was back out on his bike and cycling to stay fit and healthy. His perseverance and the successful operation have given us hope, but the fight continues. <br /><br /><strong>Radiotherapy and chemotherapy</strong><br /><br /> The next stage of treatment is now due to begin. This will include six weeks of intensive radiotherapy and chemotherapy, at The Clatterbridge Centre, followed by 6 months of further chemotherapy to hopefully shrink the remaining tumour.<br /><br /> Unfortunately, this type of aggressive tumour always recurs and treatment options on the NHS are minimal and in many cases, unsuccessful – it’s not called The Terminator for nothing! But despite the devastation GBM can cause, treatment options have not changed since 2004 and research remains hugely underfunded. <br /><br /> Stephen is keeping as positive as possible and is working hard to stay fit to help combat the effect of the radio and chemotherapy - he’s determined to fight this horrible disease head on. Alongside conventional treatment options, my husband is also following a number of diet and lifestyle changes to hopefully improve his chances of the treatment being successful.<br /><br /><strong>Treatment options for GBM</strong><br /><br /> Since his diagnosis, we’ve conducted extensive research into all current available treatments, including the options if this catastrophic tumour reoccurs. Among these is immunotherapy, which is currently showing some promise in eradicating GBM.<br /><br /> Immunotherapy alerts the immune system to find and attack the brain cancer cells. Unfortunately treatment is only available privately and costs over £200,000. <br /><br /> We are also monitoring all possible options with regards clinical trials, many of which may be overseas. We are also looking at alternative treatments like a Ketogenic diet, Kangen Water systems (filtered alkaline water) and other nutritional supplements. <br /><br /> Despite these setbacks, we’re continuing to persevere to save Stephen’s life. My husband is a kind, amazing, sociable and hardworking person. He has progressed in the same organisation for 26 years to provide for myself, and our two boys, Joseph and Sam. He has been overwhelmed by the support he has received so far. <br /><br /> Unfortunately as a result of the diagnosis, Stephen has to surrender his driving licence and we are realising more and more that the life we once knew has changed forever. <br /><br /><strong>Stephen’s work with the Steve Prescott Foundation</strong><br /><br /> Alongside his regular work, Stephen is a proud Trustee for The Steve Prescott Foundation - ironically a charity that supports a number of cancer related organisations. Over the last 10 years Stephen has took part in many gruelling physical challenges to raise funds for The Steve Prescott Foundation. <br /><br /> Steve Prescott MBE was diagnosed with a rare form of abdominal cancer in 2006 and was given months to live. He set up the Steve Prescott Foundation in 2007. After an inspirational long battle with the disease, he died in 2013 following complications from a transplant operation that cured him of his cancer, aged 39. <br /><br /> Stephen was a close friend of Steve’s and has taken a lot of inspiration from him during this difficult period. One of Steve's favourite quotes was "what the mind believes the body achieves", which is certainly poignant to us now during this difficult time.<br /><br /><strong>Our fight to save Stephen’s life and raise awareness of GBM</strong><br /><br /> We are putting all our personal finances into saving Stephen’s life, however it’s clear that we will be unable to fund all his treatment alone. For this reason, we have decided to set up this fundraising campaign to raise awareness of GBM, and support us as a family with the much-needed funds for Stephen’s treatments.<br /><br /> Initially the fundraising will be used to support the ongoing costs associated with the current treatment plan including alternative therapy, dietary changes, nutritional supplements and Kangen water.<br /> Also as mentioned above the funds will also be used for further treatments unavailable on the NHS, either in the UK or Overseas including the potential of clinical trials.<br /><br /> Whilst any surplus funds will be donated to various cancer related charities including The Walton Centre, The Clatterbridge Centre and The Brain Tumour Charity which remains hugely underfunded.<br /><br /><strong>Thanks so much for your support.</strong><br /><br /><strong> Katheryn White</strong><br /><br /><strong> #whatthemindbelievesthebodyachieves</strong><br /><br /><strong> #gbm</strong><br /><br /><strong> #battle</strong>

<div>The Warrington Wolves Academy Australia Tour 2025 presents a unique, once-in-a-lifetime opportunity for our Academy team. At the end of the regular season, players, coaches, and support staff will embark on a three-week journey to Australia. This experience will provide top-class training in world-renowned facilities and the chance to play three competitive games as part of the players' professional development and education. The team will be based in Sydney, Penrith and the Gold Coast where they will also have the opportunity to explore Australia’s rich cultural heritage by visiting iconic landmarks.

<div>Our touring party consists of 44 players and staff members. Each tour participant has been tasked with raising £2,000 as a contribution towards the costs of this incredible experience. We kindly ask for your support to help give our young players the best possible opportunity to grow and thrive along their professional rugby league pathway.

<div>This tour builds on the success of the 2023 Warrington Wolves Australia Tour, during which a group of 45 players and staff were based in Penrith. They competed against teams such as the South Sydney Rabbitohs, Wests Tigers, and an U17 New South Wales select team, while also visiting the training facilities of the Sydney Roosters and Manly Sea Eagles.

<div>The benefits of such tours are already becoming evident. Arron Lindop and Cai Taylor-Wray were promoted to the first-team squad for 2024 and made their debuts. Additionally, Ben Hartill, Jake Thewlis, and Nolan Tupaea all made their first-team debuts against Wigan Warriors in June. Arron, Cai, and Tom McKinney also represented the club at the international level, playing for England 2024 Academy team.

<div>Organising such a tour is a significant logistical and financial challenge. To meet our goals, we have already held several fundraising events, including a bucket collection at our Super League fixture against St Helens at The Halliwell Jones Stadium in September and a Race Afternoon in October. The annual Squadbuilder Quiz Night is scheduled for 17th June 2025 at The Halliwell Jones Stadium. All first-team, reserves, and academy players and coaches will be in attendance.
