What they care about

Marketing and Community Relations Manager at School of Rock Oak Park

Our beloved guitar and bass instructor, Big Joe (better known to many as Smokin’ Joe Thomas), will not be returning to work for at least another month. Three weeks ago, after leaving his shift at the school, Joe was walking to the train when he was struck by a driver exiting the tennis and fitness center nearby. He is currently undergoing physical therapy for injuries to his foot, hand, wrist, and more. While we are grateful his injuries were not even more severe, he has a long road to recovery ahead. Music is his livelihood and he cannot play with these injuries. Over the years, we’ve witnessed many close calls along Lake Street from right outside our front windows, and this incident is a difficult reminder of how important it is for all of us to stay alert and cautious while driving and walking in our community. We simply ask everyone to please slow down, stay aware, and help keep one another safe. Joe has been a mainstay in the Chicago blues scene. He has played with local, national, and international legends such as Buddy Guy, Junior Wells, Koko Taylor, Lurrie Bell, Carrie Bell, Otis Clay, Mojo Buford, and Elvin Bishop. As a bassist, Joe has toured with numerous notable artists: the Mandingo Griot Society in the countries of Germany, France, Greece, Finland, Amsterdam, and the entire continent of Europe, and the Kinzey Report throughout the state of California from 1995-2005. Joe also played and toured worldwide with the world-renowned Buddy Miles (drummer for Jimi Hendrix) in the band MST, and with members of Living Colour and Guns N' Roses. For 22 years, he served as the music director for The Underground Wonder Bar. Joe's previous students include Darryl Jones of The Rolling Stones and more. Please keep Joe in your thoughts as he focuses on healing. All fund raised will help him and his wife get by, as well as provide for his son, until he is able to work again. Thank you for all the love and support you’ve already shown him
