<div>Richard William Koldewyn (Scrumbly) is a beloved Stagebridge teacher, musician, songwriter, and co-founder of San Francisco’s iconic troupe The Cockettes. For more than 27 years, Scrumbly has shared his immense talent and heart with Stagebridge and the Bay Area arts community, inspiring countless students and audiences with his music and generosity. Stagebridge will collect donations for Scrumbly and immediately make your donation available to him to make ends meet during this incredible transition for him.

<div>Born Richard William Koldewyn in 1945, Scrumbly has spent his life bringing music and fearless creativity to the Bay Area. After earning an award-winning high-school role, he joined The Cockettes, helping shape a cultural movement. He went on to create original work with Paula Pucker and the Pioneers, Angels of Light, and Theater Workers, earning a Bay Area Critics Circle Award in 1977. He founded the a cappella new-wave group The Distractions, winning another Critics Circle Award in 1981. In 1984, he co-founded The Jesters, who toured Europe, performed with major orchestras, appeared on television, won two San Francisco Cabaret Gold Awards, and appeared in the MGM film Getting Even With Dad. Their vintage-style show Singing Fools premiered in 1995. For the past 27 years, Scrumbly has been a beloved teacher and music director at Stagebridge, inspiring older adults and artists across the Bay Area. Scrumbly is not just a local legend—he is a cherished friend and mentor whose generosity has shaped countless lives.

<div>Recently, Scrumbly experienced a heart attack and is preparing for surgery. As he focuses on healing, he faces the challenge of managing medical care, rehabilitation, medications, and daily recovery costs. The road ahead includes specialist visits, physical and cardiac therapy, follow-up care, transportation, home support, and lost income during recovery. Every dollar raised will go directly to his healing and help ease the financial burden so he can concentrate on getting well.

Violet’s big surgery and extended recovery 

After a long 4 year journey to get here, I have a date for my bottom surgery. October 8th will be the day of this major life moment and I’m super excited! I’m also experiencing a bit of understandable trepidation by the reality of what the surgery and recovery time will entail. It’s a long surgery followed by a week long stay in the hospital. After I get home from the hospital, I won’t be able to return to work for 2-3 months. So with medical expenses and suspending work for an extended period I’m coming to you all, my beloved community, to ask for some financial support.

<div>In 1969, The Cockettes debuted at the Palace Theater in San Francisco with their midnight sensation, the Nocturnal Dream Show starring a genderbending, glitter-encrusted, drug-induced theater troupe who took drag and old Hollywood musicals and turned them inside out and upside down, attracting the attention of the American underground culture.

<div>The Cockette’s sprawling, kaleidoscopic pantheon of colorful personalities included icons including Hibiscus and Sylvester and was often augmented by special guests, most notably drag superstars Divine and Mink Stole. The Cockettes were ahead of their time, especially in accepting gender fluidity and glittered beards, and they changed the face of drag forever.

<div>Although the Cockettes disbanded in 1972, its many members kept the group’s spirit alive; in 2009, a theater troupe called the Thrillpeddlers helmed by Russell Blackwood revived a legendary Cockettes show called Pearls Over Shanghai to much acclaim and a long 22-month run.

<div>Playing on the interest already garnered by David Weissman &amp; Bill Weber’s The Cockettes documentary released in 2002, interest in this troupe was reawakened and entertained an entirely new &amp; appreciative audience.

<div>Over the next decade, The Thrillpeddlers continued recreating Cockette shows under the watchful eye of the original songwriter and Cockette Scrumbly Koldewyn.
</div>
<div>In 2020, they celebrated their golden anniversary with an epic, sold-out event featuring many of their classic numbers and a special appearance by cult film icon John Waters at the Victoria Theatre in San Francisco.

<div>Producer Dan Karkoska, Assistant Director Birdie Bob Watt, and Scrumbly Koldewyn continue to spread the word about the Cockettes with new shows in both San Francisco and Oakland in 2022 with plans for San Francisco, New York City and beyond in 2023.

2ND ANNUAL PEOPLE'S MARCH NEEDS YOUR HELP!

Hi, wonderful people! It's Kevin (Squirrel!).<br /><br />Like so many independently owned small businesses across the country, Broken Seal Buttons has been struck with hardships caused by COVID-19. Broken Seal has been making buttons for the Bay Area and beyond since 2012. We deeply want to keep growing and do more for all the amazing people and communities we have been honored to help and serve! Over the last 8 years, it has been amazing to be able to make buttons for artists, Museums, Queers, POC, and all the diverse communities of the Bay Area! As well as other small businesses, social activists, and people who just had a random idea that they wanted on a button has been so amazing! <br />I have resisted sending out a call for help as long as possible. (Also to be totally honest, asking people for help makes me *very* uncomfortable.) But it has become increasingly clear that Broken Seal Buttons does need help. And if I can't find the courage to ask for help, then this business that has been built and grown with the effort and love of so many may disappear. <br /><br />We have always tried to be accessible to as many people as possible! And as a small business, we don't have a lot of extra cash on hand. And it has come to the point we are scraping the bottom of the barrel and really need help and love!<br /><br />I am hoping to raise funds to cover the losses over the last half year and to make sure we keep going!<br />---Rent and utilities<br />---Payments for monthly installments for machinery and equipment<br />---And finally, PARTS! Such as button parts, ink, and paper.<br /><br />Even if we do not meet our full goal, anything of what is raised will help!
