<div>We are raising money for our friends who are stuck in Mexico waiting for the documents they need to get home. In order to protect the identities of our friends for their safety, the photos attached to this fundraiser are of some local sights seen on their trip and of the two puppies who are waiting for their humans to come home.

<div>When Shannon set out on her journey to help her friend stay safe in Mexico and get back home safely, she expected the trip to take up to two weeks and budgeted time and money for a week beyond that just in case. Since then, both women, who have lived their entire lives in the United States, have met with delay after unjustified delay caused by everything from minor clerical errors to gaping systemic deficiencies to on the part of our own government. They have done everything in their power to urge, beg and demand the officials in charge of their case to issue the standard, simple documentation which those same officials agree that our friends are entitled to.

<div>At every turn both women have been met with a frankly shocking level of disregard for their safety. Due to this indifference from our government, our friends are now stuck in an unfamiliar country for an indefinite period of time with no ability to earn money to survive or tell their employer, families, or landlords when they will be able to return.

<div>As horrible as this situation sounds, it is not unheard of, and it is not even unique to the current administration. Innocent Americans go through similar tribulations every year through no fault of their own, while simply trying to do normal, constructive things like visit family, take a vacation, travel for school or work, comply with our immigration policies, or even do charity work.

<div>We know times are hard right now for pretty much anyone who isn't a billionaire. That is why the target amount for this fundraiser was chosen with such great care, and calculated to be just enough to make sure our friends have food and shelter for the next couple of weeks. We would rather have to do this again at the beginning of December than ask for more than we think they will need. That having been said, if our friends' luck does turn around before the amount raised is spent on keeping them safe and fed, the remainder will be used to help pay for legal representation for a Dreamer whose lawyer is helping them adjust status.

<div>Many of you know that Monique has been suffering from a seizure disorder for some time. We now know that these seizures are related to two astrocytomas—tumors in her brain. To relieve her symptoms, she requires two urgent surgeries: one to insert an external ventricular drain and another to resect the tumor. These surgeries are crucial to her health and well-being, but they also mean a long and difficult recovery ahead.

<div>Astrocytomas can be life-changing and require immediate and ongoing medical care. While the prognosis varies depending on the type and grade of the tumor, early and effective treatment can significantly improve outcomes. This makes the upcoming surgeries critical not just for symptom relief but for her long-term health. However, the road to recovery is long and will require several months of rest, rehabilitation, and close medical monitoring.

<div>During her recovery, Monique will not be able to work for 3-4 months. As a single mother, this puts her in a precarious situation, as she needs to cover her living expenses while she focuses on healing and taking care of her children.

Specifically, CAT management is disciplining union supportive staff for standing up for themselves and their right to organize, changed staff electronics and working conditions without staff input, and announced potential layoffs. Specifically, CLU is demanding that CAT management cease retaliating against it’s workers for organizing their workplace and come to the bargaining table in good faith, including bargaining over unilateral working conditions. In Memory of Jennifer Comey

<p>After a string of pandemic-related bad luck, I’m currently sinking under the weight of back rent I cannot pay while underemployed and seeking full-time work. I will face eviction without the option to pay my balance and renew my lease (which is also up) if I’m unable to come up with nearly $7,000 fast.

<p><br />My cat and faithful sidekick Moxie is in need of lymphoma treatment soon and I also cannot move in with my family due to my father’s advancing Alzheimer’s. To do so would be risking too much, so I have to stay here. I live in the smallest  unit in a restricted income apartment complex; cheaper rent isn’t an option anywhere in the region.

Housing Help for Jen

On Monday, December 28, at a worksite in Sunset Park, Brooklyn, a wall fell and killed Jasim Mia and severely injured Ashraful Hasan. Both the workers were immigrants of Bangladeshi origin and longtime active members of our Bangladeshi community. Ashraful Hasan is an active DRUM member for over 2 years, and Jasim was the cousin of a DRUM member.<br /><br />The subcontractor and the contractor on the worksite, who hired Jasim and Ashraful, worked without a license, as well as performed work on the wall without a permit. They also tried to repair the damaged retaining wall without a shoring wall in order to save money and increase their profit. The contractor provided no supervision or guidance to ensure the job was done safely and securely.<br /><br />The greed for more profits killed Jasim, and has left Ashraful severely injured, and certainly unable to work ever again.<br /><br />As usual, the business owners gather together to protect each other and to protect their profits. They make false promises of ‘insurance money’ and ‘disability benefits’ to the families and tell them not to talk to anyone else, and especially not to DRUM or any workers organizations.<br /><br />We are raising funds to support Ashraful Hasan for his recovery and needs, because he will very likely be unable to work ever again. He will also not be able to access most sources of public benefits as a result of his immigration status. 100% of the funds raised will go as cash to Ashraful Hasan.

In the midst of a <strong>deadly</strong>, global pandemic, while most of the state was ablaze and the air filled with toxic smoke, the Kinney family was forcibly removed from their fourth-generation home. In the morning of September 9th, 2020, Multnomah County Sheriffs bashed open the Kinney family door at gunpoint. Armed with assault rifles, they barked orders for the family to pack up their belongings and move within 30 minutes. The Kinneys were given no prior legal notice, as their case was still in litigation in a higher court. Multnomah County Judge Judith H. Matazarro authorized the eviction in direct violation of state and federal eviction moratoriums.<br /><br /><br />We <strong>refuse</strong> to let another eviction happen. Outraged at the treatment of this Afro-Indigenous family, the Portland community has united to save the Red House on Mississippi, rallying support around the family to reclaim the house and hold the land in a 24/7 eviction blockade. Since September, support has grown for the Red House and today we maintain an around-the-clock community presence along with onsite camping, a fully functional kitchen offering two free hot meals a day, and free programming centered in healing and abolition. This is what it looks like for neighbors to truly take care of each other.<br /><br /><br />Our Story<br /><br /><br />One of the oldest standing homes in the neighborhood, the Red House on Mississippi was built in 1896 and has belonged to the Kinney family for 65 years. In the 1950s, William and Pauline Kinney, an African-American couple, moved to Portland from Little Rock, Arkansas to escape deep South oppression. Like other Black families, they were redlined out of getting loans in North Portland and bought the home outright with cash in 1955. There, they raised their children, and a new generation of Kinneys made the Red House their family home.<br /><br />Their oldest son, William Kinney Jr. grew up in the house and remembers a time when the home was a rental for Black families and he would help his father to collect rents. He went on to become a security officer for Portland Community College, where he served from 1976 to 1992. After being excluded from training available to white employees, he spoke out. In retaliation, he was wrongfully demoted and eventually terminated. He filed a racial discrimination lawsuit against the college. A federal jury awarded him $900,000, though he accepted a settlement of a fraction of the award amount because the college threatened to appeal. <br /><br />Meanwhile, in 1983, he’d returned to the Red House with his wife Julie (an Indigenous Native of the Upper Skagit Tribe of Washington) and their four-year-old, Michele. William and Julie had two more children, William Kinney III two years later (1985) and youngest son Michael (in 1990). Family memories fill the house and the neighborhood, though the shiny new condos and expensive food carts of gentrification tell a different story.<br /><br />Before the community garden was built across the street, it was a vacant lot known as “the field,” used as a community baseball field amongst all the neighbors. All three of the Kinney siblings played for Peninsula Little League and proudly remember the year William’s team won the district and went on to state. One winter, Julie brought the kids over to the field during a heavy snow to build a snow-cat that was about 12 feet long. It was so huge that reporters showed up with cameras to put it on the evening news.<br /><br /><br />The Kinneys describe the attack on their family as beginning in 2002, when their son, William III was taken to prison at the young age of 17 for an automobile accident. In hopes of saving their child from the brutality of the prison system, the family was left with no choice but to take out a loan against their home to pay for costly legal fees. Despite their efforts to fight the system and keep their family together, the Kinneys' lives took a downward turn when William III was taken to prison for two 5-year sentences, totaling 10 years.<br /><br />During her son’s incarceration, Julie Metcalf Kinney was met with the untimely dissolution of the local nonprofit Low Income Housing for Native Americans of Portland, Oregon (LIHNAPO), where she served as Executive Director. A longtime housing organizer for Indigenous families, she’d been involved with LIHNAPO since its founding in the early 1990s and had served as an original board member in addition to being a member of the Interstate Urban Renewal Committee of Portland and a commissioner of the Housing Authority of Grand Ronde. Mrs. Metcalf Kinney dedicated her life to fighting against the gentrification of inner-city Portland where she was born and raised. Now, decades later, her family faces the tragedy of losing their home to criminal banking practices and a horrifying illegal eviction.<br /><br />Big Banks and Back-Room Deals<br /><br />The trouble for the Kinneys intensified in 2004 when they refinanced their second mortgage with Beneficial Oregon to pay off an adjustable rate mortgage that had an increasing interest rate. The first loan was paid off by the new one. In December 2016 the Kinneys received a notice that the loan had been transferred from Beneficial to MTGLQ Investors (a subsidiary of Goldman Sachs), but that they should continue to send payments to Beneficial as the servicer. The loan was evidently assigned from Beneficial Financial 1, Inc. ("BF1"), as successor through merger to Beneficial, to MTGLQ.<br /><br />The Kinneys then received paperwork from both entities for the next two months, each demanding payment, so the family sent a letter seeking to verify the new entity that was servicing the loan. In May 2017 the loan was sold again, this time to U.S. Bank Trust National Association ("U.S. Bank Trust"). It was then transferred to U.S. Bank Trust REO Trust. In May 2018, Clear Recon Corporation was appointed as successor trustee of the 2004 Deed of Trust and they initiated the process to foreclose on the Kinney’s home.<br /><br />The Kinneys continued to challenge the process, but their home was sold via auction as a nonjudicial foreclosure in October 2018. Owing only $97,000 on their home, they were denied their right to buy it back (their right of redemption) as protected by Oregon law. They even tried to bid on their own home at the auction but were refused on a technicality. According to Zillow, the empty lot directly adjacent to the Kinney family home is worth $10.2M.<br /><br />Their home was reportedly sold to a developer, Roman Ozeruga of Urban Housing Development, who got the deed in 2018. Urban Housing Development attempted to evict the Kinneys when it first got the deed, but the eviction was stalled by the Kinneys’ federal complaint and a state counterclaim. In February 2020, possession of the Kinneys’ home was awarded to Urban Housing Development. In March, Oregon declared a state of emergency due to COVID-19, issuing a statewide eviction moratorium on April 1st. A federal eviction moratorium followed on September 1st. Moratoriums at both state and federal levels should have halted the eviction.<br /><br />What’s Happening Now<br /><br /><br />In response to the community and family’s reclaiming of the land, Multnomah County initiated a new 30-day writ of execution to re-evict the family. While it was set to expire October 27th, sheriffs failed to evict the family by the court-ordered deadline. Instead, Multnomah County Judge Stephen Bushong made an unusual decision, extending the writ of execution an additional 120 days. As winter arrives and temperatures dip below freezing, the community remains resolute in their support, initiating weatherizing projects for those who continue to live and sleep outside the Red House in anticipation of a second eviction, which could happen anytime in the next four months. History shows the next eviction may be more devastating than the first.<br /><br /><br />The family’s litigation continues, too. On November 14th, a petition for a writ of certiorari was filed in the U.S. Supreme Court. Urban Housing Development has until December 23rd to respond. While the fight continues in the courts, we’re working in the community to leverage our people power. This is where you come in.<br /><br /><br />We Need Your Help<br /><br /><br />We don’t need another empty, high-rise, high-rent luxury condominium. The Kinneys are one of the last Black families remaining on Mississippi and their fight for their home is also a real-time fight against gentrification. In order to stand a chance against the big banks and developers who’ve systematically displaced Black families across North and Northeast Portland, we need leverage.<br /><br /><br />We need to raise $250,000 by [date], the last day of Multnomah County’s extended writ of execution. This money will be an essential bargaining tool to initiate negotiations with developer Roman Ozeruga and ensure the Kinney family can remain housed for generations to come. To reach our goal, we’ll need to raise $22,000 each week starting today, on Black Friday 2020. Save The Kinney Family Home

This holiday season, let's show our gratitude by raising $60,000 so elder Black Freedom activists, like my Aunt Pam, have the food, housing and medical care they need to thrive. Whether your donation is $10 or $10,000, the generosity is deeply appreciated. With $60K we could prevent evictions and provide home health care,  food, and holiday help to five elder Black activists. <strong>All elders should be guaranteed basic care, and especially our elder activists who fought for our lives and freedom in undeclared wars against Black communities. They fought for our lives, don't let it cost them theirs. </strong><br /><br />Last month, one of my mother's best friends, Pam Hannah, was admitted to the hospital with severe Hyponatremia, a potentially fatal condition caused, in part, by malnutrition, among other issues.   Only two weeks after being released from the hospital, she was re-admitted two days before Thanksgiving. My Aunt Pam is a veteran member of the Black Panther Party and has actively fought for Black human rights and freedom her entire life, alongside my mother Janet Cyril who died in 2005.<strong> Now, in order for her to live at home, my aunt Pam urgently needs at least $10,000 to support extra home care, cleaning, and more to supplement what our failed State has neglected to offer. </strong><br /><br /><strong><em>My Auntie Pam is not alone</em>.</strong> <strong>Ramona Africa</strong>, a member of MOVE, the Philadelphia based Black organization bombed by police in 1985 is also aging and in need of support. When you live on freedom's frontline, there is no pension, no retirement and the only safety net is the one the movement offers.<br /><br /><strong>Baba Sekou Odinga</strong> is a former member of the Black Panther Party incarcerated as a political prisoner for decades, yet he continues to struggle for our collective freedom and deserves our help and support too.<br /><br /><strong>Bullwhip Cyril Innis Jr.</strong> and <strong>Yasmeen Majid</strong> are among dozens of aging Black activists who dedicated their lives to the freedom of all Black people, and they aren't the only ones.<br /><br />That's why this holiday fundraising drive hosted by me, my sister Sala, Pam's daughter Ksisay and my friends and movement kin, Monifa and Lumumba Bandele, strives to raise enough money to support the beautiful Black lives of up to 10 elder Black activists. I hope can turn this into a longer term effort to provide movement elders a safety net, even if we have to weave it with our own hands. <div>Jay Chase of the NATO3 is finally free, and very much needs your support!!  Jay Chase, along with two others were kidnapped by the state of Illinois when NATO came to Chicago back in 2012.  The three of them came to Chicago, along with tens of thousands of others to say NO to the war machine that is NATO.  While in Chicago, the three of them were entrapped by undercover cops and then charged with numerous, ridiculous felonies.  This was the first time the state of Illinois charged people with conspiracy to commit terrorism, and it was simply for protesting NATO and being far leftists. Thanks to many awesome people on their legal team, and broader community support, they were found not guilty on all terrorism related charges!  However, all three were convicted on one felony. Jay was sentenced to the longest time, 8 years, for that felony. This sentence was beyond terrible in so many ways, but especially awful because Jay Chase has Huntington's disease.  He was diagnosed with it back in 2013 and the disease has been progressing since then.  Huntington's disease effects so many different aspects of a person, including their motor skills and cognitive ability.   Jay is out, but he has a long fight ahead of him with this disease.  There is no cure for Huntington's but there is treatment that can slow symptoms and prolong life.  Jay did not receive good care in IDOC (are we surprised?) but we want to get him proper care now that he is free.  Donations will be used to1) get Jay set up with basic necessities people need,2) medical care, and3) housing.  Jay will need continuous care as he fights this disease, so we are calling on our large community to come together to help him.   We see the continuous fight for justice and equality in the streets today, and that is fantastic!  Let's come together to support someone who took to those same streets 8 years ago and had everything, including his health and liberty, ripped away from him.  Let's make Jay's time left the best it can be!

Jay Chase of the NATO3 Is FREE!!!

A group of New York City public defenders* are raising money to support Teens Take Charge, a group of teenage students in New York City’s Public School System, who are young and dedicated activists committed to the cause of desegregating New York City’s Public School System.<br /><br />          These young advocates have faced racist, unconscionable bullying in various forms old and new, including online harassment, doxxing, and even in-person at a press conference by at least one parent (while that parent sat as a member on a Community Education Council).<br /><br />     Some parents have even gone so far as to threaten to file baseless defamation lawsuits against children based on their advocating against racist, segregationist positions of white elected representatives on the CEC.<br /><br />          In solidarity with these young advocates, we’d like to purchase a copy of two books for each of the thirty-five students in their summer institute and their fifteen-member leadership team. If we can get enough donations, we’d love to expand it to the 120 students who are in Teens Take Charge. Based on the list price of these two books after taxes, we need to raise approximately $6350 to buy 135 copies of each book from a local bookstore.<br /><br />          The students in Teens Take Charge chose the following two books: How to Be An Antiracist by Ibram X. <p><strong>Delbert Africa entered the Ancestral Realm in June 15, 2020, but hundreds of political prisoners still need to come home!</strong><br />My father, Delbert Orr Africa, was a political prisoner from the MOVE Organization that was wrongfully imprisoned for nearly 42 years. Although he finally got paroled on Saturday, January 18th, he faced some serious health issues that required immediate treatment long before his release in January 2020.

<strong>Miss Major is Coming to New York City!</strong><br /><br />The National Lawyers Guild is honored and excited to have the Legendary Trans Movement Leader, Miss Major, coming to our Law for the People Convention annual Student Party, an intergenerational event that will be hosted at the Stonewall.<br /><br />The Stonewall riots that took place in June 1969 are considered one of the most important events in the fight for LGBTQ rights in the United States. The National Lawyers Guild is honoring this history with a queer/trans liberation dance party, where we will be celebrating queer elders and trans leaders including Miss Major!<br /><br />However, before we can get the party started, we have to make sure we can get Miss Major safely and comfortably from Oakland California to New York City, and that's where YOU come in!<br /><br />We need to raise $3,000 for accessible plane tickets, accessible hotel accomadations, and accessible transportation once she gets into the city. <br /><br />Miss Major has given so much to our communities, and we want to make sure she is comfortable and cared for while she's here with us in New York.<br /><br />Throw down $500 if you have, or $5 if you have that. Dear Friends and Family:<br /><br /> We are writing to ask for your help for our dear friend and colleague, Maria Alexandra Garcia. The recent months of mobilization against police violence has been an inspiration across the US and the world. Here in New York, the police have recently retaliated with a wave of arrests, violence and intimidation against activists, linked or not to recent protests. For many of us, this wave of repression hit close to our hearts with the police targeting of long-time activist, interpreter and scholar, Alexandra Garcia.<br /><br /> On Friday, December 19, the NYPD raided Alexandra's home, seized her personal possessions, and arrested her. Press, identifying her as Maria Garcia, has been particularly malicious around her arrest, with a wave of false and misleading news articles, including photographs of her and publishing her home address. Since, surrounded by loving friends, Alexandra has been trying to rebuild her life. <br /><br /> The police and district attorney falsely accuse Alexandra of being present during an anti-police brutality protest on the Brooklyn Bridge on December 13th. She denies the allegations and will fight through the court process to vindicate her claim. Our support for her, however, is not reducible to innocence, and extends to others targeted by police. She is a part of the larger racial justice movement that has spoken out against the failure  to indict NYPD Officer Daniel Pantaleo in the death of Eric Garner and the systemic racism involved in police brutality against people of color in New York City and across the United States.  Even though she was not present at the December 13th march, she is being targeted as a part of a larger strategy to stifle the protest movement that is advancing a conversation about race and the criminal justice system in the US to the mainstream.<br /><br />We have known Alex for many years through organizing farmworkers, as an organizaer for ACORN and New York Communities for Change, or as an interpreter for the social justice movement. You may also know her through her work at El Museo del Barrio and The Queens Museum, where Alex uses cultural production, community events, and network building as a way to organize Latino communities in East Harlem and Corona and create a network of support for immigrant families. <br /><br /> For those of you who don’t know Alex, she is a smart, warm, and deeply kind person who touches the people that she meets with her passionate enthusiasm and inspirational commitment to both her work, and the social justice movement at large. She is a part of our community, and is always willing to offer her support and experience to fight against the many injustices around her, and to support others in doing the same.<br /><br /> We need your help to make up the considerable financial costs Alexandra faces in rebuilding her life. With the press publication of her address, she is seeking a new apartment. The seizure of her computer and camera prevented her from completing her final papers, a semester's work, delaying her receiving her prestigious fellowship. She faces many other personal expenses in the coming months as a result of this ongoing legal case. She is being represented pro bono by the Criminal Defense Clinic of the Benjamin N. Cardozo School of Law, allowing us to put contributions towards Alexandra’s other expenses, rather than legal fees. Sherry has been living in Oregon City since 2017 and may be evicted tomorrow unless she is able to pay $962 for rent arrears.
