<div><strong>Mars Williams</strong> is a beloved member of the creative music community whose influence radiates outward from his home in Chicago to every corner of the globe. As a grammy-nominated saxophonist, composer, and bandleader he’s fronted too many ensembles to count, ranging from his longstanding working band <strong>Liquid Soul, Witches and Devils, NRG Ensemble, Extraordinary Popular Delusions, An Ayler Xmas, XmarsX</strong>, and <strong>Boneshaker.</strong> In the rock world, he's legendary for his decades of recording and touring with <strong>The Psychedelic Furs</strong>, as well as stints with <strong>The Waitresses, Ministry, Power Station, Billy Idol, Die Warzau, Jerry Garcia, Billy Squire</strong>, and countless others.

<div><strong>At the end of last December, Mars was diagnosed with a rare cancer known as ampullary cancer, in which a tumor develops near the bile duct and pancreas.</strong> He underwent major surgery in January, followed by a three-week hospital stay to recuperate. And in March he began a six-month course of chemotherapy. Despite these challenges, his attitude is totally upbeat, and he’s tackling this like everything else in his life – head on. But he needs our support to make it through.

While he does have insurance, that only covers a portion of the monumental expenses. And like most lifelong working musicians, he doesn’t have the savings to see himself through a crisis of this magnitude.

Help Mars Williams Beat Cancer

Familias Unidas en Acción, BanchasLenguas Language Justice Collective, and Cooperation New Orleans have been collectively building the cooperative ecosystem in New Orleans since the summer of 2019.  Since early March, we have expanded our solidarity efforts to support Familias Unidas en Accion, a New Orleans- based group of immigrant families, during the Covid-19 pandemic. We need your help to support families, especially those with young children, who are in need of food and economic aid. Most people in New Orleans have lost their jobs due to Covid-19;  this crisis is hitting our immigrant community particularly hard. In addition, undocumented and very low-income people will not be eligible for the funds provided by the federal government relief package. <br /><br />We will use the funds to purchase produce and bulk foods such as beans, rice, and maseca to distribute to families. A $50 donation would provide basic food supplies for a family of 6 for a week. We will also use the funds to provide direct economic aid to immigrant families who are ineligible for government relief. Also, a portion of these funds will be used to support the work of Banchas Lenguas who are providing necessary translation and interpretation services during this time. Most of the Covid-19 information and community support being provided is only in English, and these interpretation services are keeping our community informed and connected. <br /><br />Your support is urgently needed. We are part of a growing movement of love, solidarity, and mutual aid in our city. Our actions today will help us build toward a local economy rooted in solidarity, cooperation, and human need: an economy for people over profit. On February 10, 2020⁠, Aquil was admitted to the ER with what initially appeared to be a worsening case of the flu. Two days later, he was diagnosed with <a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Stevens%E2%80%93Johnson_syndrome" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Stevens-Johnson Syndrome</a>  (SJS), a rare but very severe allergic reaction to over-the-counter or prescribed medication that affects the skin and mucous membranes. <br /><br />SJS affects just 1 to 2 million people per year, and complete recovery can take months. To combat the life-threatening effects of this condition, Aquil is currently being treated in the burn unit at the University of Chicago Hospital. He has already had to undergo eye surgery to prevent permanent damage to his eyesight. <br /><br /><br />Doctors estimate that Aquil is in for a month-long stay in the Intensive Care Unit (ICU), which will likely result in a hospital bill in the high 6-figure range for him and his family. <br /><br /><br />Aquil, who has spent nearly his entire career working for numerous nonprofit organizations—is a loving son, brother, father and friend who has always been there to support his community and the people he cares about. We are asking for your help to offset Aquil’s medical expenses and support him in his journey to recovery ahead. <br /><br /><br />No donation is too small, and we truly appreciate any amount you can give.
