<div>I’m a global justice strategist, storyteller, and lifelong student of history, power, and possibility. My work lives at the intersection of memory and movement. I explore how the stories we inherit shape the systems we live inside, and how truth, when told honestly, can become a catalyst for change.

<div>I am raising funds to create a professional proof of concept for a documentary film titled Why Is Washington [Still] Burning? This film tells a true and largely undocumented story from 1968 that I did not learn until adulthood, and that I began filming in 2019.
</div>

<div>Two days after the assassination of Martin Luther King Jr., as Washington, D.C. faced widespread fires, military occupation, and mass arrests, a group of 100 white and Jewish physicians, nurses, lawyers, and faith leaders organized emergency medical care, legal defense, and political strategy in direct support of Black communities. My mother, Susanne Orrin Jackson, and Arthur Waskow were the lead organizers of this effort. I was just weeks old at the time.

<div>Arthur Waskow was an acclaimed Jewish theologian and public intellectual. In 1969, he founded the Freedom Seder, a groundbreaking cross racial Passover ritual that explicitly linked Jewish liberation to Black freedom struggles in America. He died just a few months ago, making the preservation of this history especially urgent.
</div>

<div>I discovered this history when my mother sent me the original typewritten documents they created in the immediate aftermath of Dr. King’s assassination. These were not reflections written years later. They were strategy documents. Emergency plans. Evidence of disciplined organizing in real time.
</div>
<div><br />
</div>
<div>When I asked my mother how they were able to mobilize so quickly, she told me they had already spent the previous year organizing against the Vietnam War. The networks, trust, and infrastructure were already in place before crisis arrived.
</div>
<div><br />
</div>
<div>Why Is Washington [Still] Burning? documents this hidden history through original archival materials, government testimony, and living witnesses, including my now 82 year old mother. It asks why the structural conditions that led to the 1968 uprising remain unresolved today, and what real solidarity has required across generations. The film explores what happens when ordinary people build parallel systems of care, governance, and accountability in the absence of justice.

<div>The proof of concept is being created in collaboration with filmmaker Kyle Dorrell, a credited director and editor, and my film partner Matteo Colaciello. This reel is essential for securing foundation funding and completing the documentary. Contributions support editing, archival integration, and professional post production so this story can be told accurately and responsibly while those who lived it are still here.

Why Is Washington [Still] Burning? The Untold Story of 1968.

<div><strong>“I’m not a criminal — so why am I being treated like one?”</strong>

<div>In November 2024, I received an unexpected call from my cousin Monica, whom I hadn’t seen since childhood in Colombia – before I left the country at age 12. She explained that guerrilla activity in her rural region had intensified, threatening her family’s safety and making their agricultural business unsustainable. Her oldest son, Mauro, was planning to flee the country and seek political asylum in the United States. She asked if I would be willing to serve as his sponsor.

<div>It was a difficult request, one I didn't take lightly. I thought deeply about the implications for my family and me. When I’m faced with hard choices, I turn to my late father for guidance — I look to the heavens and ask, “What would Papa do?” I knew his answer: he would open his heart and his home. He would help.
</div>
<div><br />
</div>
<div>Monica has been raising four children on her own since her husband died of a sudden heart attack at age 41 — the same year I lost my father. Mauro, her oldest son, was only 18 when he stepped into the role of provider, helping maintain their small agricultural business and putting food on the table.
</div>
<div><br />
</div>
<div>Eventually, economic hardship and escalating violence forced Mauro to make an unimaginable decision: to leave his family and undertake the dangerous journey through Central America, crossing the Mexico–U.S. border in hopes of seeking asylum — the same path my father took nearly 40 years ago to create a better life for us.
</div>

</div>
<div>After a brief stay in a detention center in Arizona, Mauro was released with an ankle GPS monitor and allowed to continue his asylum process. He lived with me for a few months before moving to Chelsea, where he became a full-time volunteer at La Colaborativa’s La Casita, a shelter supporting immigrant families. Mauro quickly became a beloved and valued member of the community. I saw it for myself when I attended La Colaborativa’s gala — Mauro was greeted with open arms, laughter, and genuine affection from the staff and other volunteers.

<div><strong>But on June 5, 2025, everything changed.</strong>
</div>
<div><br />
</div>
<div>Mauro was summoned to the ICE office in Burlington, supposedly for a routine GPS tracker inspection. Instead, he was detained and transferred to a prison in Plymouth. His asylum case had been denied, and his appeal was still pending. Now he waits behind bars, hoping for a miracle — praying that his appeal will be successful so he can continue serving his community and rebuilding his life.
</div>

</div>
<div>He calls me from prison often. Through three-way calls, I connect him with his mother in Colombia. Each time, he asks her through tears, <em>“Mamá, ¿por qué estoy aquí? No soy un criminal.”</em>
</div>
<div><em>"Mom, why am I here? I’m not a criminal."</em>
</div>
<div><br />
</div>
<div>And he’s right. Mauro is not a criminal. He is a young man who stepped up when life demanded the impossible. He fled violence, sought refuge, and poured himself into serving others. Now he’s in a prison cell.
</div>

</div>
<div>As his sponsor, I continue doing what my father would do — offering a helping hand. I’ve shared Mauro’s story with anyone who will listen. Legal fees are mounting, and your support is deeply appreciated.

As co-captain, I helped lead my high school team to the state championship, where I ended my high school career scoring 100% from the field (you can see it at the link below).

<div>My academic and athletic record helped me gain admission to 10 colleges and universities (including American Univ., Syracuse, Loyola Maryland, Temple, and Seton Hill) and earn an opportunity to walk on to an NCAA D2 team in Pennsylvania! And, I stand ready to work even harder when I get to the next level.

<div>Now, I need my village to help me get there.

<div>Unfortunately, I found my school late after the recruiting season and after the team's scholarship money was already allocated. But, God is good, and being an athletic scholar has kept the pathway open: I earned $24k in an academic scholarship, another $2.5k for being admitted to the Honors Program, and I am eligible for a $5k housing grant and a $5,500 federal loan. That gets me more than halfway there. But there is still a gap -- a $25,778 gap.

It would be a long story to tell you what she's been through as a survivor and single mom of three. But suffice it to say, there's no mountain she wouldn't climb or debt she wouldn't take on to help me reach my dreams. But, it is my prayer that I won't have to ask her to take on a mountain of new debt over the next four years, especially since she is still raising my little siblings alone.

<div>People may think I have it made and resources for college shouldn't be a problem, but, unfortunately, appearances are sometimes only that. Everyone who publicly claims you doesn't privately support you. Despite the lack of support and obstacle after obstacle intentionally thrown in her way, I have watched my mom struggle and overcome for 18 years. And, that's why I leave everything on the court and bring it all to the classroom.

<div>As many of you know, Wallace recently began displaying symptoms of a decline in health. The world froze as we all held our breath and prayed that our beloved dude still had at least a few more of those nine lives left.

<div>If you follow Jay, you know Wallace has brought endless joy and comfort to us all since Jay brought him home in 2016 – offering us much-needed levity during the pandemic, especially – and we all expected those green eyes and stripes to make cameos in Jay's video for many years to come. This sudden turn of events was heartbreaking both as friends of Wallace, and of Jay, and <strong>a few days ago we got the bad news: Wallace was diagnosed with FIP, feline infectious peritonitis. In the words of Jay, "It's really bad. Could be only days." </strong>

<div>Apropos of Jay's legacy with The Underground Railroad, it turns out there is an underground treatment protocol for FIP using an off-label drug unapproved by the FDA – and it's known to be successful. The good cat dad he is, Jay rushed into action and got Wallace set up for treatment within the day. But this is just the beginning of our hero's journey.

<div>Because this treatment is underground and takes time, it results in *wildly* expensive vet bills. We're talking thousands upon thousands of dollars getting racked up in a very short period. No matter how much you prepare for such an expense, you take a HARD hit, and it can take a very long time to recover from that. The $5K goal is just a fraction of what this type of care costs. As one of Jay's friends cautioned about the treatment Wallace is undergoing, "It's a marathon, so prepare yourself for a long haul."

<div>It's absolutely terrible that with how our systems are set up, people essentially risk going bankrupt or having to choose to end their best friend's life, and no one, especially Jay, should have to be in that position.

Just 5 days later on December 17, Sheena went to the hospital because she didn't feel well and was having a hard time breathing. She was admitted to the hospital that night and only a few days later was told on Friday, December 20, that she had cancer - what she thought was allergies was instead an aggressively growing mass on her lungs.<br /><br />Sheena will need to start chemotherapy right away and is undergoing tests to see if and how far the cancer has spread. <p>On August 28th, the <strong>“Black Life Matters Ride,</strong>” an initiative of ‪<strong>#‎BlackLivesMatter‬</strong>, will bring activists and professionals of color from across the country to Ferguson, Missouri, as part of a national call to end state sanctioned violence against Black people.<br /><br />We are a coalition of volunteer medics, community organizers, cultural workers, artists, media specialists, counselors, and legal professionals (from New York, New Jersey and Phildalephia) and we will provide on-the-ground support to the Ferguson community. <br /><br /><strong>AGENDA</strong>:<br /><strong>Aug 28th and 29th:</strong> Travel days<br /><strong>Aug 30th and 31st:</strong> Solidarity march and local community engagement efforts coordinated with local community members<br /><strong>Aug 31st:</strong> Establish next steps and key action items in the #BlackLivesMatter movement. Riders return to their communities  ready to organize within their local networks. <br /><br /><strong>YOUR CONTRIBUTION WILL BE USED TO HELP:</strong><br />1. Subsidize travel (i.e. gas and tolls; bus and/or van rentals), housing, and/or for riders in need of financial assistance;<br /><br /> 2. Purchase necessary materials and supplies;<br /><br /> 3. Support any emergency costs accrued by riders, if nessary (i.e. legal fees and other safety matters);<br /><br /> 4. Support the family of Mike Brown. A percentage of the funds raised will be provided to the family; and<br /><br />5. Support <a href="http://obs-onthemove.org/">The Organization for Black Struggle</a>, a local nonprofit commited to ending police brutality in St. Louis.<br /><br /><strong>Local sustainability is of the upmost importance.
