<div>I saw how fresh, unprocessed food shaped my family’s health at home in Pakistan, compared to the more processed diet in Canada and United States, places I've called home for the last two decades.
</div>

</div>
<div>This contrast has inspired a lifelong commitment to mindful eating and an active lifestyle.
</div>
<div><br />
</div>
<div>In 2020, after a routine surgery led to life-threatening complications, followed by a concussion, and years of recovery, I began exploring food’s impact on health and blood sugar. My research led me to the ancient practice of long-fermented breads, a process that transforms high-glycemic flour into nourishing, low-glycemic baked goods.

<div>Disappointed by the inauthenticity of store-bought sourdough, I sourced a 130-year-old starter and have spent a year perfecting sourdough that doesn’t spike my blood sugar. Since starting to offer my bread and baked goods for sale, demand for my bakery has skyrocketed. I went from three orders per week to a thriving weekly menu of sourdough breads, chocolate chip cookies, naan, English muffins, and more.

<div><strong><em>Demand for fresh baked sourdough has outpaced my kitchen's capacity</em>.</strong> I now need to invest in a commercial bread oven, mixer, and additional storage to deliver higher volumes to my community without burning out and while caring for my body and energy. With your support, I can scale my operations, share the joy of real sourdough with more people, and continue this journey of healing and connection—one loaf at a time.

<div>My goal is to scale up from porch pick-ups to weekly markets and custom orders. I am launching this crowdfunding kickstarter campaign to help raise community funds for a deck, brick oven designed specifically for in-home microbakeries and for the kind of bread I bake.

<div><strong><em>An oven, along with a commercial mixer, fridge, and other key equipment will be a game changer in so many ways.</em></strong> They will allow me to make the same quality bread at greater volumes with more efficiency in my baking process and time while lowering the physical burden on my body.

<div>To top it all, baking at higher volumes will allow me to switch to locally sourced organic flour and other ingredients.
</div>

<div>On the seventh day of October, suddenly in the early morning, we heard a sound, and then we realized that the war had started, From the first minute all my family members evacuated to my aunt's house in central Jabalia, which was considered safer than our house on the eastern border of Jabalia. After the first week, we learned that our house was got damaged by bombs , making it difficult to return and live in it. Also, the Israeli army requested people in the north to evacuate to the south of Gaza Valley.

<div>There were over 400 people in the house we were in. Most of them evacuated to southern Gaza, and a few remained in the north of Gaza Valley, including us. Initially, my father refused to evacuate south due to my illness and his old age, finding it difficult to live in shelters. Therefore, we decided to stay in northern Gaza.
</div>

<div>After forty days of intense bombing and fear, shells started falling on the house we were staying in the city center May God protect us . That's when we decided to flee south. It was very difficult for me as a girl with muscular dystrophy to move like everyone else, so my father decided to provide me with a wheelchair.
</div>

</div>
<div>After much struggle, we managed to get the wheelchair from kind-hearted people and fled to the south of the valley, to the Deir al-Balah area. After enduring great suffering at the checkpoint from 8:00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m., we arrived at Deir al-Balah and stayed in shelters in schools, which were overcrowded.

<div>After much suffering and mediation by relatives, we built a small tent that could accommodate at least four people, but my family, consisting of twenty members, found it difficult because I, as a girl with muscular dystrophy, didn't have suitable conditions in the tent - no walls to lean on and no suitable bathroom. I suffered a lot and got sick by hepatitis A in this tent as all my family members suffered from influenza ,intestinal disease and hepatitis A due to lack of good food and clean water .

<div>The war affected me greatly, as well as my health condition and my father's, who suffers from diabetes, high blood pressure, and many strokes. I am now in the final stage of secondary school, eagerly waiting to complete it and pursue my dreams like any other girl in the world. But the war came, destroying all my dreams and aspirations, including our warm home that we waited five years to complete, and my father had arranged everything for me, including a suitable bathroom.

<div>في اليوم السابع من أكتوبر، فجأة في الصباح الباكر، سمعنا صوتا، ثم أدركنا أن الحرب قد بدأت، منذ اللحظة الأولى تم إجلاء جميع أفراد عائلتي إلى منزل عمتي في وسط جباليا، الذي كان يعتبر أكثر أمانا من منزلنا على الحدود الشرقية لجباليا. بعد الأسبوع الأول، علمنا أن منزلنا قد تضرر بسبب القنابل، مما جعل من الصعب العودة والعيش فيه. أيضا، طلب الجيش الإسرائيلي من الناس في الشمال الإخلاء إلى جنوب وادي غزة.

<div>لقد فقدنا منزلنا، أرضنا الزراعية التي اجتاحت تماما وفقدنا أعمالنا، متجر الأحذية.

<div>بعد الكثير من النضال، تمكنا من الحصول على الكرسي المتحرك من أشخاص طيبي القلب وهربنا إلى جنوب الوادي، إلى منطقة دير البلح. بعد تحملنا معاناة كبيرة عند نقطة التفتيش من الساعة 8:00 صباحا إلى الساعة 8:00 مساء، وصلنا إلى دير البلح وبقينا في الملاجئ في المدارس، التي كانت مكتظة.

<div>بعد الكثير من المعاناة والوساطة من قبل الأقارب، قمنا ببناء خيمة صغيرة يمكن أن تستوعب أربعة أشخاص على الأقل، ولكن عائلتي، المكونة من عشرين عضوا، وجدت صعوبة في ذلك لأنني، كفتاة تعاني من ضمور عضلي، لم يكن لدي ظروف مناسبة في الخيمة - لا توجد جدران تتكئ عليها ولا حمام مناسب. عانيت كثيرا ومرضت من التهاب الكبد A في هذه الخيمة حيث عانى جميع أفراد عائلتي من الأنفلونزا وأمراض الأمعاء والتهاب الكبد A بسبب نقص الطعام الجيد والمياه النظيفة.

<div>أثرت الحرب علي بشكل كبير، وكذلك حالتي الصحية ووالدي، الذي يعاني من مرض السكري وارتفاع ضغط الدم والعديد من السكتات الدماغية. أنا الآن في المرحلة الأخيرة من المدرسة الثانوية، أنتظر بفارغ الصبر إكمالها ومتابعة أحلامي مثل أي فتاة أخرى في العالم. لكن الحرب جاءت، ودمرت كل أحلامي وتطلعاتي، بما في ذلك منزلنا الدافئ الذي انتظرنا خمس سنوات لإكماله، وكان والدي قد رتب كل شيء لي، بما في ذلك حمام مناسب.

<div>On Friday, June 2, 2023, Ajike "Aj" Owens, a devoted and loving mother of four, was tragically and unjustifiably murdered in an attempt to protect her children from racism and violence.

<div>Ajike's children were playing in a field next to an Ocala apartment complex when an unidentified 58-year-old white woman reportedly began yelling at them and calling them racial slurs. The children left but accidentally left an iPad behind, which the woman took. When one of the children went to her residence to retrieve it, she threw it, hitting the boy and cracking the screen. After Ajike's children informed her of what happened, she walked across the street with her kids to speak with the woman. She knocked on the door, and at that point, the woman allegedly shot through the door, hitting Ajike, who later died from her injuries. The woman responsible has not yet been identified, arrested, or charged with anything by law enforcement.

She was a single mother whose life centered around her children. She was the Team Mom for her children’s football/cheerleading teams. She excelled professionally as a manager in the Restaurant/Hospitality industry. She was a devoted Christian who believed in bringing her kids up in a supportive Christian environment. After being a devoted mother, she was a devoted friend that took friendships to heart. There wasn’t anything that she wouldn’t do for those near and dear to her heart. She often would give to other single mothers that were in similar situations that she’d been in.

Although he initially had some positive forward progress, he has again been intubated and is often agitated, confused, and combative.

<div>As a board member of the recently closed <a href="https://www.afghanfriends.net" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Afghan Friends Network</a>, I come to you with a rare opportunity to get flour and oil directly into the hands of families in the Ghazni Province of Afghanistan, a country <a href="https://www.rescue.org/article/afghanistan-entire-population-pushed-poverty" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">facing multiple threats</a> and among the top humanitarian crises on the planet.

<div>Before the takeover by the Taliban, the Afghan Friends Network had been able to open and sponsor <a href="https://www.afghanfriends.net/the-khurasan-learning-center" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">several schools</a>, run under the direction of Fatima Mushtaq. Fatima, who also served as <a href="https://www.latimes.com/archives/la-xpm-2006-dec-03-fg-schools3-story.html" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Director of Education of Ghazni province</a>, received multiple <a href="https://www.hrw.org/report/2006/07/10/lessons-terror/attacks-education-afghanistan" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">death threats</a>, and after several teachers were shot, AFN closed the schools. When the Taliban took over the entire country, AFN helped get Fatima and five of her six children out of the country. Her husband and one of her grown daughters were unable to escape Afghanistan, but have been able to distribute sacks of flour and gallons of oil that we fundraised for two weeks ago: with a single $2k donation, we were able to provide for 45 families facing malnutrition, severe cold and lack of opportunities in the tightening vise of Taliban rule.

<div>The escalating atrocities against women and girls of Afghanistan shock the conscience of humanity. In the latest assault on women and children, the Taliban in Balkh province has <a href="https://www.wionews.com/south-asia/exclusive-afghan-women-fear-for-life-as-taliban-ban-male-doctors-from-treating-them-551218" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">barred women from seeing male doctors</a>. The severe shortage of female physicians effectively <a href="https://blogs.bmj.com/bmj/2021/09/06/staring-into-the-darkness-women-health-workers-in-afghanistan" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">prevents women from receiving medical care</a>.
</div>

<div>Just prior to their most recent decree, the Taliban banned women from serving as aid workers or interacting with male NGO workers. Since the December 24th ban, <a href="https://www.pbs.org/newshour/world/taliban-ban-on-women-workers-hurts-humanitarian-aid-for-afghans" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">only 14% of aid organizations can operate in the country</a>, and the ones that can still operate are increasingly unable to deliver aid to cold and hungry children and families. The opportunity we have through Fatima’s husband and daughter to deliver directly to Afghan families is a rare and precious lifeline.

<p>On Friday, July 23rd Steve Van Pelt and a dear friend made it to the top of Mt. Jefferson. They spent an incredible day together, and Steve was on cloud nine. They were on their way down when his friend saw Steve slip and fall hundreds of feet. From the way he fell, we know that his end was immediate. Every effort has been made, but crews were not able to spot him and the ravine where we believe he is resting is inaccessible. There is no more appropriate tombstone for Steve than Mt. Jefferson.

<p>My brother is capable of doing anything. Building anything. Fixing anything. He is the most talented person I know. He takes risks, but is not reckless. He thrives on adrenaline. He is invincible. He is my safe place. My best friend. My hero. We’ve lived all of life together. We’ve traveled through the highest and lowest parts together. He knows me authentically. He knows my heart. He knows my hurts. And he knows how deeply I love and admire him because we did not leave any of those words unspoken.
</p>

<p>I thought that we were going to keep traveling this path together. It just doesn’t make sense that it can be over when he’s not finished yet. When his dreams are still sitting in the driveway. When his perfect other half is still here, broken. Maybe life doesn’t follow a neat story arc the way that I believed. Maybe clichés are our greatest form of wisdom and truth. "Life is short." "Accidents happen." And maybe even "Time heals all wounds"?

<p>My brother is, and has always been, a part of this mountain. He is, and has always been, a part of this rugged landscape. He is, and has always been, a part of this wilderness. Manicured grounds could never hold him. There is no other place where he could be at rest.

<p>I don’t understand. I don’t know how I’ll ever be okay again. But I know that he wants me to be. I know that he is okay. He’s just off on his next adventure.

In Memory of Steve Van Pelt

On behalf of our dear friend and sister, Sweetwater Nannauck (Tlingit), we are extending an important ask out to you all today, as she is needing and looking for <strong>medium to long-term housing. We who have learned so much from her are raising money to support her housing stability in these difficult financial times of the Covid-19 pandemic.</strong><br /><br /><img src="https://d2g8igdw686xgo.cloudfront.net/51448788_1600979466612137_r.jpeg" alt="51448788_1600979466612137_r.jpeg" width="100%" media_type="3" />                                   Photo: Portrait by Mel Ponder<br /><br />The original Native elders of this land, the aunties, uncles, grandmothers and grandfathers are some of the most sacred treasures we still have. Their wisdom, patience, willingness to teach and share their traditional ways, strengths of survival and connections to the great Mother Earth and Spirit, are some of our richest resources. We must do our best to support them during these challenging seasons.<br /><br />The few short years I have known Sweetwater and witnessed the work she does with her various communities has been incredibly inspiring. I have sat in on Decolonizing Our Activism workshops she hosts for those in the community seeking more historical knowledge on systemic racism of Native peoples. She has been a lifelong mentor and advocate for Native youth through numerous projects and efforts. She is a prayer warrior and hosts various prayer circles for BIPOC. She is a strong advocate for climate actions and protection of the environment, tribal sovereignty rights, against tribal disenrollment, and ICWA rights as she has hosted and organized as Director of Idle No More Washington.<br /><br />Prior to the Covid-19, Sweetwater often travelled providing workshops, presentations, keynote speaker, consulting, and organizing. She works with the University of Washington and has regular student interns and service learning class volunteers every quarter come to her for her Native perspective and guidance while fulfilling their volunteer obligation for a class. She’s helped 4 of these students get into graduate school with letters of recommendations, and helped 3 get jobs by being a reference for them. Holding onto our Elders - Sweetwater

<p><br /><br />On 08/26/2020 Hurrican Laura, hit the coast of Louisiana as a Category 4 hurricane and made its way through  Lake Charles, LA. Many homes, business have been devastated and families displaced. 
</p>

<p><br /><strong>Who is this helping?</strong>
</p>

<p>My in-laws are an incredible group of 4 families with 8 children who homes were devastated by Hurricane Laura. They are a hardworking family who have never been in this position of hardship. They have worked all their lives to save up and pay off these homes and it was all taken away overnight. They do not have homeowners insurance that covers natural disasters. 
</p>

<p><br /><strong>The Situation as of 08/28/2020 -3pm <br /></strong>The city does not have electricity or running water at the moment, with no idea as to when utilities will return. The 100mph winds tore off roofs and ripped walls, crushed ceilings, with excessive water damage. Lake Charles Hurricane Relief- Medina Family

<p>On June 15th, 2020, my family and I lost the most important person in our lives. My mother was diagnosed with Hodgkin's Lymphoma, a cancer of the lymphatic system. My family and I had very high hopes given that doctors caught it early and it was a form of cancer that was very treatable. My mother started chemotherapy earlier this year and over the past few months, her health had started to decline due to the side effects of the chemo treatments which we were all unaware of until it was too late. She was admitted to the ICU earlier this month due to shortness of breath, excessive coughing, and other symptoms identified by my older brother before she was taken to the hospital. <br /><br />We received a diagnosis of pneumonia and several other issues that caused her lungs to start deteriorating including a pulmonary embolism and edema. On the morning of her passing, we learned that a small hole had developed in her lungs. The doctor's tried every treatment that they possibly could from the very first day that she was admitted to the hospital. Unfortunately, the treatments did not improve her condition and on the 15th of June, they told us that there was nothing else that they could do for her. My family and I remained by her side as she took her very last breath. 
</p>

<p>We are beyond devastated as we try to process the sudden loss of the person most dearest to us. It's hard to even imagine life without my mother, she was my best friend and the one person I knew that I could always lean on. She always protected me and had my back no matter what. I am the woman I am today because of her and her love. She had the most beautiful soul and everywhere she went, she instantly made friends whether at the grocery store, banks, anywhere. People were naturally drawn to her and her beautiful spirit. She was always so full of life and joy. It was rare to ever see her sad. She was so strong even through many hardships and always kept a smile on her face and made us all laugh with her silly jokes and sense of humor. She adopted all of my friends as if they were her own children, making sure they were always fed and comfortable whenever they would stay over.
</p>

<p>She was selfless and her faith in God was so strong. She truly loved The Lord and kept him first in everything that she did. She spent a lot of her life sharing a piece of her beautiful heart with all of those around her. She was always helping others even when she didn't have much to spare. She always found a way to give back in any way that she could and that is something I will continue on in her memory. I strive to be more like her each and every day of my life. She may never to get to see me get married or meet her future grandchildren, but I know that she's watching over me and will forever live in my heart and spirit and I know my family feels the same.
</p>

<p>My family and I are now left to pick up the pieces of our shattered hearts from her unexpected and sudden passing. The cost of her upcoming medical bills and funeral expenses will be a hurdle for us. I have created this gofundme to honor my mother and her memory and to help aid us in providing her with a beautiful burial and ceremony that she most certainly deserves.

Cancer is an ugly, horrific disease and my goal is to defeat it before it ever touches my own life.<br /><br /><img src="https://d2g8igdw686xgo.cloudfront.net/40003866_1560806061220388_r.jpeg" alt="40003866_1560806061220388_r.jpeg" width="100%" media_type="3" /><br />Right after my dad was diagnosed with highly aggressive Stage 4 metastatic prostate cancer, I tested positive for the cancer-causing BRCA-2 mutation. BRCA mutations are associated with breast cancers, ovarian cancers, pancreatic cancers, and melanoma, as well as being associated with developing cancer at a younger age. My oncological team studied my DNA and put together a genetic panel describing my lifetime risks of getting cancer. I have an 85+% chance of getting breast cancer, and a 30-40% chance of getting ovarian cancer. <strong>I hope my story can inspire others to consider genetic testing, assess their risk, and be proactive in managing their cancer risk.</strong><br /> <br />After meeting with my team of doctors and surgeons, a breast MRI, and breast biopsy, I’ve decided to be proactive about my cancer risk and get a <strong>risk-reducing prophylactic double mastectomy.</strong> While very scary and a major surgery, this is the best way to minimize my risk so that I (fingers crossed!) never get cancer. This will reduce my odds of breast cancer to less than 5%.<br /> <br />I found an excellent surgeon to do my mastectomy and reconstruction. She has devised a 2-step surgical process to maximize my chances of retaining my nipples. The first step is a “reduction” surgery, scheduled for August 7, 2019, and the second step is the mastectomy and reconstruction with implants in November 2019.<br /> <br />I’ve put together a GoFundMe to ask for help in paying for the surgeries, managing my recovery, and easing the financial burden. Insurance is a significant help here, as it will cover both surgeries, but I’m still responsible for my high deductible and out-of-pocket costs. <strong>As a 3rd year graduate student, this financial strain is crippling. </strong>The funds will go to the following: insurance out-of-pocket deductible (surgery costs, doctors appointments, testing, medications, hospital stay, spirometer, etc.); pillows (wedge body pillow, heart-shaped arm pillow, and pregnancy pillow); PJs and robes to hold post-op fluid drains; new wireless bras and medical compression bras; physical therapy to manage pain &amp; reduce lymphedema; silicon scar cream; and gym training to regain range of motion and upper-body strength.<br /> <br />Thank you so much for considering and sharing my story. This has been an extremely difficult emotional and physical journey, but I’m so grateful for my friends and family who are helping ease my burden. My BRCA-2 Double Mastectomy

It was hobby that went way too far. I became addicted and obsessed as most climbers do. Before I knew it, my weekend hobby was starting to look like more of a career. I knew there was no money in climbing from the start. I was never doing it for money, it was for the challenges, the glory and the laughter. Hence, I've had to live two fairly imcompatible lifestyles to fund my climbing addiction.  I work fairly hard at a desk all day and at night I attempt to crush boulders! <br /><br />I rallied hard in 2017 and 18, knowing one thing only, that if I ever wanted to compete overseas, it's all or nothing at training.<br /><br />I made it! I have just been selected for the Australian Open Bouldering International Team after a very successful 2018 competing in Australia. <br /><br />This means I can represent Australia overseas next year in 6 world cups and the world championships in Japan!<br /><br />Selection for the world cup circuit has been my dream for the past 5 years and now that I’ve made it, I would like to devote my heart and soul into training for it. I don’t like to do things by halves and I wouldn't want to go knowing I didnt give it 100%.<br /><br /> Unfortunately, unlike other countries, in Australia all climbers are responsible for their own expenses to compete for their country.  We have no funding source as of yet. <br /><br />Climbing in Australia is fast gaining popularity since the announcement that it will be show cased in the 2020 Tokyo Olympics. In 2017, the Australian Sports Committee also recognised climbing as a sport and Sport Climbing Australia (our Federation) is now doing everything in its power to secure sponsorship for athletes, but that will take some time. <br /><br />Many milestones were achieved last year, unfortunately Australian athletes are still struggling financially without and funding from the Government or our Federation. <br /><br />To compete oveseas in 2019, I must pay for international flights, visas, transport, hotels, my coach and federation fees. On top of that I really need to take time off work to train and recover. My work schedule isn’t very compatible with proper training. <br /><br />Please don't feel like you need to give much!
