<div>We are reaching out to you with a heavy heart to share our mum's story. In 2021 she was diagnosed with Stage 4 Metastatic Lung Cancer despite never having smoked a day in her life.

<div>Over the past two. Years she has undergone gruelling rounds of Chemotherapy, Immunotherapy and Radiotherapy, fighting with every ounce of strength she has.
</div>
<div><br />
</div>
<div>Unfortunately, her cancer is aggressive and has a mutation called HER2 which is rare. The cancer is spreading and she has recently had to endure 2 hours of Stereotactic Radiotherapy Surgery to her brain.
</div>
<div><br />
</div>
<div>Her Oncology team have told us that she urgently needs a specific drug called Enhertu - this drug actively targets the HER2 mutation that her cancer has.
</div>
<div><br />
</div>
<div>Shockingly whilst this drug is available on the NHS for breast cancer patients who have the HER2 mutation it has still not been approved by NICE for use in lung cancer patients.
</div>
<div><br />
</div>
<div>Her oncologist has told us that faced with the same situation, the drug they would want for their family would be this one. However, it is proving impossible to get.
</div>

</div>
<div>We have exhausted every avenue in our search for help, we have reached out to AstraZeneca (UK and USA branches), Daiichi Sankyo (Japanese Manufacturer together with AstraZeneca) NHS England, NICE, CEO and Chief Medical Officers at UHB, and our local MP but no one will help us. The QE hospital where she is being treated have applied to get this drug from the Pharmaceutical Company on compassionate grounds but has been refused.

<div>The injustice is alarming -how is it fair that a drug that could halt the progress of this disease and give someone more time is accessible only if one can pay for it. We are devastated by the immoral reality that our mum could be sitting in the same cancer clinic as someone who will receive this drug for free, simply because they have breast cancer, whilst our mum is denied access because of the type of cancer she has.

<div>Today we were told that to buy the drug is going to cost us £9,040 every three weeks and will need to be paid upfront. We are hoping to start treatment within the next 4-6 weeks but will be guided by the professionals as to the exact date. We are intending to fund the first few treatments from our savings but we know this will not be sustainable for too long. Treatment will continue if the drug is shown to be working, which we all hope it will be but obviously, this will require us to find this money every three weeks. Our mum can no longer work due to her condition so this is a big ask. So, reluctantly we are setting up this GoFundMe campaign not only for our mum but also for other people who may be in a similar position, denied access to life-prolonging drugs because of the type of cancer that have. We believe that everyone should have the right to receive the best possible treatment for their condition regardless of the type of cancer they have. We create this page with hope to relieve some pressure from the family at this incredibly difficult time.<br /><br /><strong>Callum’s Story</strong><br /><br />Callum was diagnosed with a brain tumour at the early age of 6, just before his 7th birthday in 2005. His tumour was discovered due to deterioration of his eye sight, constant headaches, sickness and an obvious change within himself. <br /><br /> He underwent a 6.5 hour operation at Birmingham Children’s hospital with the hope to remove as much of the tumour possible, however, the position of the tumour in his brain presented high risks and surgeons could only remove one third of the tumour. <br /><br />Callum then had 18 months of chemotherapy from 2005-2007, from the age of 7. His life during these years consisted of back and forth trips to the hospital due to infections, blood transfusions, scans, tests, temperatures and a lot of scares. <br /><br />Over those 18 months Callum was unable to attend school, therefore was home schooled and unable to do all the things that a little boy of his age should have been doing. <br /><br /> In 2013 his tumour became active and Callum was told the devastating news that his tumour had started to grow once again. This time, it was suggested that proton beam therapy was the form of treatment best suited for him. Since proton beam therapy wasn’t available in the UK in 2013, it meant Callum and his parents had to fly to America (Oklahoma) to receive the treatment he needed. They spent 2 months in Oklahoma and upon completion of his treatment, Callum was awarded with a special medal to signify his bravery. <br /><br /> Despite all the bad, Callum has a huge personality; forever lifting other people’s energies, always smiling, laughing and being silly. It’s forever said that Callum never fails to leave a lasting impression on anyone who meets him. Determined not to let his illness hinder his life and ambitions, he completed childcare at college and landed his first job as a teaching assistant, helping children who like him, have their own disabilities.<br /><br /> In 2017 Callum met Georgia, the love of his life. Happier than ever they decided to try for a baby, despite Callum previously being told he was unable to have children due to all the treatments he has had in the past. <br /><br />On February 13th 2019, they were blessed with the birth of their beautiful baby girl, Isla-Grace.<br /><br /> <strong>A true living miracle</strong>. <br /><br /> All Callum has ever wanted was to be a dad and have a family of his own, it’s always been his one wish. Happier than ever, everything was falling into place, he was living the life he once thought couldn’t happen. <br /><br /> Callum now works at Templar’s Primary School in Coventry as a learning mentor. Being the caring, compassionate person he is, Callum adores his job and the children there, both staff and the children adore him too.<br /><br /> On April 13th this year, Callum was enjoying a night out with friends when he was pushed over and banged his head. As a precaution he went to hospital to have this checked out. Unfortunately, scan results revealed a second, new brain tumour. <br /><br />Initially, Callum and his family were led to believe the tumour was very small in size, which gave everyone hope that it would be manageable. This, however, was not the case and the tumour was in fact large in size.<br /><br /> Neurosurgeons and professionals advised that in order to gain a better understanding of the new tumour, a biopsy was necessary.<br /><br />On the day of his biopsy, 8th May, Callum remained positive throughout. Laughing about his hospital stockings and kissing photos of his daughter, he reassured all his family of his love for them. <br /><br /> Unfortunately, the biopsy didn’t go as planned. Callum had a severe bleed on the brain during the operation which resulted in surgeons placing two drains in his head to remove the excess blood and fluid, in an attempt to relieve the pressure on his brain. <br /><br /> Callum’s family were told on that night that he was not expected to make it and that he is now severely brain damaged. Within a day, life was flipped upside down for Callum, his family, his girlfriend, daughter and all his loved ones.<br /><br /> Since the biopsy, the family have been advised his tumour is behaving like a Grade 4 and is unfortunately, terminal. <br /><br /> His family have been by his bedside throughout, unable to work. There are no words that can bring comfort, however we hope to ease the financial pressure for the family. In aid to show how truly loved and missed Callum is by all of us here at Templars Primary school. <div>Ducks are available to buy for as little as £1 and can be collected from outlets in Rugby, Coventry and the surrounding areas. These serve as a reminder to “Check Your Ducks” each month, and we encourage you to take them on any journeys, days out, meals or anything you have planned to start these conversations with family and friends, children and adults. 
</div>
<div>Our “Check Your Ducks Day” is every month, on the 17th, the date of Tracie’s birthday and serves as a reminder to check yourself on this day, every month. 
</div>
<div>Tracie’s own cancer journey is detailed below, and she truly hopes her story touches your hearts as your stories and donations touch hers....
</div>
<div>In 2013, Tracie Mills, the founder of Check Your Ducks was diagnosed with Breast Cancer and started the path of intense chemotherapy, following with a double mastectomy, all under the superb care of the Oncology and Breast Care teams based at the UHCW Hospital in Coventry, and subsequently The Maple Unit at Rugby, St.Cross. Her dream started as raising £1000 for one new chemotherapy chair for the Arden Centre in Coventry where she had been receiving treatment.  Tracie wanted to give something back for the care and support she had received during such a difficult time and many friends and family jumped on board and for the past 6 years. Tracie has been spurring on the public, local businesses and anyone else who would listen, to help, support and fundraise for her charity and the kindness and generosity of our local community was second to none. 
</div>
<div>Every single £1 matters and is received gratefully and will make a difference to the future of cancer patients and their care. She will make sure of it.
</div>
<div>We will continue to fundraise and support in any way we can to support the community of Cancer Care in Rugby and Coventry and Warwickshire.
</div>
<div>We have next to no overheads and the support of people and local businesses in Rugby and Coventry carry us through and we are proud to say that every single penny gets donated to help patients/families dealing with Cancer.
</div>
<div>Tracie lives on in hope that the legacy of Check Your Ducks continues for many years to come and continues to help the future of Cancer in Rugby and Coventry long after she is gone. Things are now in place for this to continue with the recruitment of an Admin Team since Tracie has become more poorly. 
</div>
<div>Nickie, Rebecca, Shell and Mand are running with it, holding the reigns and doing a wonderful job. Tracie is obviously in the loop and trying to maintain a huge input where she can. Tracie is a self admitted control freak and perfectionist but knows they will continue in her own unique style.
</div>
<div>Cancer is a devastating disease, not only for the patient but for the family and friends involved. It turns lives upside down and changes the patient dramatically, treatment is debilitating and this can have a huge impact on the patient and all that love them.
</div>
<div>Tracie of course has much to say and her final few words in updating this story remain mainly unchanged "I am still here fighting the good fight, days are much harder than ever before, life just keeps throwing unbearable curve balls, they knock you down, the important thing is how you get back up. Check Your Ducks has never been and will never be a ME, it has always been a WE.

<div>I am truly grateful for every penny that is donated and will make a difference in the future of patients and their loved ones and I assure you I will go down fighting and continue with the tenacity and sheer determination that I always have. I have beautiful friends waiting for me and ready to dance with ducks in the fast lane of heaven, and I will have never given up the fight. Cancer wins eventually and at some point I know it will win with me. I will be dancing with ducks on the other side of the stars, I will dance with you one day, much love!" xx
