Support Mauser’s Fight for Life

<div>A little backstory: On February 24th, my sister-in-law went into labor. While she was in labor her 18 month old daughter Lilah had a seizure while at home. She was rushed to the hospital where they did a scan and found a mass on her brain. Later that day she was transferred to a children’s hospital for an MRI where they found out that the mass was a stage 4 tumor. On March 3rd, Lilah had brain surgery to remove the tumor, which the surgery was very successful! The whole tumor was removed and Lilah is recovering very well, you would have never known that she had brain surgery!

<div>Later in the week they found out that Lilah has been diagnosed with a very rare aggressive form of brain cancer. There were only 58 documented cases in the U.S. last year. She will be admitted to the hospital and she will have 3 months of chemo and 3 months of stem cell treatment. They will be living at the hospital for 4 weeks at a time while she is getting her treatments.

<div>On September 26th at 1:30 am, we received news that a house fire took the life of my Aunt Joanne, her dog Zeus and critically injured my Uncle Chris and Uncle Paul. Both Paul and Chris are fighting for their lives at UF Health/Shands Gainesville Burn Center. Paul suffered 2nd-degree burns to his upper extremities, face, and shoulders. He is currently on a ventilator due to the smoke inhalation injury to his lungs.

<div>Chris is very unstable and at this time has a very low chance of surviving his injuries. <strong>His heroic actions of helping his brother Paul out of the house and going back inside to attempt to save his sister Joanne have left him with very life-threatening injuries.</strong> He has suffered a very severe inhalation injury, 3rd-degree burns to his face, head, arms, and back. He is currently on a ventilator, CRT, and they are considering ECMO as his organs are failing. They have encouraged family to visit and say goodbyes in case he does not survive the weekend.

Help Leila Heal After Her Accident

<div>Some neighbors of mine had this Dane who they let wander around the neighborhood constantly. He drove my dogs absolutely insane because he kept coming in my front yard. He appeared severely neglected... very underweight, bad eye infection, gross skin issues. I bugged animal control until they finally picked him up - it's a rural area where there aren't really strict leash laws. The owners found out he was there, said they had gone on vacation and just left him outside with food and water, but that they'd come and get him when they returned home. That was about a month ago.

<div>I went to animal control to take pictures of him a few weeks ago to try to network with Great Dane rescues and see if I could get him in anywhere and he looked pretty dang bad. I didn't feel comfortable leaving him and I felt like I had a responsibility to him, so I filled out adoption paperwork with plans to bring him home, hopefully get him healthy, and into a rescue:

<div>On January 12, he was brought to a vet by animal control to be neutered so he could come home with me. The vet called and said she didn't feel comfortable neutering him in his current condition. She wrote out a certificate allowing me to bring him home not fixed and agree to do it in a few weeks after he had hopefully gained some weight. He got a bath, full blood panel run, and skin cytology, which showed bacterial infections on his skin. He weighed 86lbs yesterday, he was brought into Animal Control in late November at 91lbs so he had lost a little bit since then.

<div>While waiting for animal control to pick him up so I could come get him, he started displaying symptoms of bloat. The vet was confident she caught it immediately and got him stabilized and called me. We discussed options and his likelihood of not surviving surgery right now. I really wanted to give him a chance because no one else has in life. I talked it over with her and I went and brought him to an emergency vet clinic so that he could be monitored full-time after the surgery. I dropped him and they did x-rays and went ahead and went through with the surgical procedure despite his likelihood of not making it. He survived the surgery - it's now about 15 hours later and he is staying stable but he's definitely not out of the woods yet. He had his stomach tacked to prevent further bloat and his organs were examined to make sure there was no bruising from the period when his stomach was twisted, but it's possible there was damage to his heart. Obviously, his emaciation is going to complicate healing.

<div>This was a massive expense that I wasn't planning on undergoing and I did it because I felt like the dog deserved a chance. My dad passed away unexpectedly a few months ago and I received a small inheritance from that, so thankfully I did not have to worry about supporting myself or my animals if I chose to go through with a surgery for Sawyer, but it is still going to be $6,000-9,000 that I wasn't planning on having to cover. Several people on Reddit were asking about donating to support him and I'm so, so appreciative for all the concern people have shown for him and wanted to give people a chance to contribute if they wanted. All money will go towards his care.

<div>Hey everyone, I’m raising money to purchase the treatment that is needed for my cat, Oliver. Oliver has a very unique, energetic personality. He’s extremely curious and loves to play! He enjoys laying in his hammock basking in the sun looking out of the window. His favorite toy is a bee attached to a string. When people come over, Oliver loves to greet them and hang out with everyone because he wants to be apart of the fun.

<div>Oliver was recently diagnosed with Feline infectious peritonitis (FIP) which is a viral disease caused by a feline coronavirus that affects wild and domestic cats. The dry form of FIP causes infection and inflammatory lesions around the blood vessels in a cat’s body. When a cat gets FIP, it is progressive and almost always fatal. And because of all this I don't want to lose him. He is fighting a tough battle.

<div>FIP has long been considered an untreatable disease. It wasn’t until recently that antiviral drugs were introduced to help treat FIP. These drugs are not yet approved by the FDA. There are groups who are educated and specialize in helping obtain the necessary treatment. The treatment consists of 85 days of injections and is known to have no relapse, but it has a hefty price tag because it’s so difficult to obtain at times.

The government assistance programs are all out of funding. One place called R.I.S.E Homes backed out last minute due to their lack of follow through after I had sent my part in and showed them a screenshot of my part, which they requested. She denied me last minute to cover the 1000 for Oct rent I owe. Now November rent is due and I am on the list to be evicted. So I am asking for some help to cover my rent through January. <div>On July 5, thirteen-month-old Zethan Lloyd drowned in a swimming pool. By the time his mother was able to get him, he was dead. She was able to perform CPR while his family looked on praying with all their hearts that Mom would be able to breathe life back into their baby brother.

<div>By the grace of God, Zeth was brought back to life through those life-saving breaths of his mother. But, the road to recovery isn't so clear. The Lloyd family is on a sabbatical living down in Costa Rica where this occurred. Baby Zeth was life-flighted to San Jose where he was put in a medical coma to reduce the swelling that is in his brain. It is unclear what exactly his state is because of this, nor will they really know anything until they are certain they can bring him out of the induced coma. He also is battling an infection in his blood in addition to all the complications from the drowning.

<div>At this time, the Lloyd family has to pay all of the medical expenses out of pocket. Their insurance will reimburse them for the out-of-pocket expenses but only after they hit their deductible. This $10,000 is to help them through the cost of the life-saving care this thirteen-month angel is receiving. Any surplus they don't use will be either refunded or used to help other families in Costa Rica pay for their children's life-saving procedures (Zeth has two roommates who are in as bad a condition as he).

Support striking journalists in Jacksonville

<div>Hi my is Dave and I’m trying to raise money for our friends/neighbors the Garis Family. Thier cat Gator (named for his orange fur &amp; blue eyes &amp; his mama’s love for the Florida Gators ) recently went missing in Silverleaf community for 18 days. His mom &amp; Dad did everything they could think of to try &amp; find him: physical searching day &amp; night, flyers, drone thermal imaging, going door to door, posting on every social media site, &amp; so much praying. There were no sightings of him, no signs, no leads. On day 18 Gator showed up on a neighbors back porch 15 houses away, severely burned on the left side of his body. It’s not exactly clear how the burns happened, but per Gators Dr. they are far beyond 3rd degree. Gator will most likely need reconstructive surgery and skin graphs to heal. Gator will be in emergency care at least 3 more week. After 2 days the cost has already exceeded $1,500! This family will do whatever it takes to get Gator healthy and back home to his family. This community has benn so wonderful and supportive when they were looking for him. Gator’s family is so appreciative, any little bit helps! Lets go Gator!!

<p>This is my beautiful Lila, my daughter with the sweet smile and big brown eyes. At 11 ½, she’s creative and curious, friendly and compassionate. She loves animals and the beach, drawing and helping people with her art. And despite this huge heart of hers, Lila tells me she only feels good or happy inside about 20% of the time – like her heart is a bucket that she can’t fill with love and security because it feels like there’s a hole in the bottom where it quickly drains out. <br /><img src="https://d2g8igdw686xgo.cloudfront.net/54681990_1613913986691341_r.jpeg" alt="54681990_1613913986691341_r.jpeg" width="100%" media_type="3" /><strong>Lila, at Christmas, in a moment of happiness. <p>When she was just 4 years old, I first noticed Lila responded differently than other children to minor conflicts or the word “no” – certainly differently than her older brother did at the same age. I didn’t know what it was, but I knew she was struggling with something that she couldn’t express and that I could never understand. She had screaming fits, throwing things from her bedroom down the stairs, inconsolable until she’d accidentally hurt herself and collapse into tears. It was like she could only replace mad with pain, whether directed at herself or at me.

<p>When she was 5 ½, she rode her scooter in front of a car…because she felt so terrible inside that she just wanted to die. That’s when she began psychiatric care. At 6, I made the hard choice to give her medicine – admitting she needed it was super hard, accepting that my daughter needed an antipsychotic rarely used in kids was beyond words. But within a few days, she began to feel a wider range of emotions, sometimes joy but still mostly the negatives —disappointment, sadness, shame. Still, she stopped threatening to hurt me or herself. But the truth is, that progress was short-lived because it didn’t help repair what was broken inside her – didn’t plug the hole in her heart bucket.  <br /><img src="https://d2g8igdw686xgo.cloudfront.net/54681990_1613914661738814_r.jpeg" alt="54681990_1613914661738814_r.jpeg" width="100%" media_type="3" /><strong>Lila at 8. </strong><br /><br />Officially, Lila is diagnosed with a mood disorder, emotional disregulation, and ADHD. Borderline personality traits are also an issue. Learning-wise, she has a form of dyslexia and slow processing speed and difficulty remembering things (her working memory is not great) – these are separate from but exacerbate her mental illness. Things that you and I can just brush off, Lila can’t. Every disagreement it’s as if she feels tossed away like trash, every small conflict feels likes she’s being told to stop breathing, every “no” feels like death to her. Like flipping a switch, she goes into fight or flight... and it’s always fight, a fight for what feels like must be her life.<br /><img src="https://d2g8igdw686xgo.cloudfront.net/54681990_1613913843666379_r.jpeg" alt="54681990_1613913843666379_r.jpeg" width="100%" media_type="3" /><strong>Lila at 7.<br /></strong><br />As Lila’s mother, I’ve done everything I can find to help – therapy, psychiatric care, educational evaluations, a special school for her learning disabilities – to make her feel loved in a lasting way. And I’ve spent tens of thousands of dollars out of pocket for her treatment – downsizing to save on rent, cutting the extras to free up money, taking on freelance jobs on top of my full-time work. I do this out of love for her and our family but also at the expense of my family – myself and my son who sacrifice alongside. I navigate all this with an ex-spouse who doesn’t understand the extent of the problem himself. And within a healthcare system that offers few real options for children with mental health issues. Over the last year, it’s become clear that Lila needs more for her wellbeing than what any weekly or twice-weekly therapy appointment can accomplish.<br /><img src="https://d2g8igdw686xgo.cloudfront.net/54681990_1613913878343717_r.jpeg" alt="54681990_1613913878343717_r.jpeg" width="100%" media_type="3" /><strong>Lila’s love of animals, and their love of her, is one of the few things she holds onto when it comes to love and security. <br /><br /></strong>I’ve found a warm, home-like residential treatment program in <a href="http://www.intermountainresidential.org/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Montana</a>  for her – listening to their therapists and hearing parents talk about the progress their young children have made with their program is, in a word, miraculous – it gives me hope for the first time in years. But that hope comes with a huge price tag – not only to make this treatment possible for her but to help my family survive during it. While insurance may cover somewhere between a third and a half of the costs, it’s likely to do so for one to three months at most; the in-patient program is $12,600 a month on top of the $14,200 to secure a place for her – one month in advance plus the enrollment fee!<br /><br /><img src="https://d2g8igdw686xgo.cloudfront.net/54681990_1613917389510428_r.jpeg" alt="54681990_1613917389510428_r.jpeg" width="100%" media_type="3" /><span style="font-size:1.0625rem;"><strong>A happy moment last summer. </strong></span>

<p><span style="font-size:1.0625rem;">Average stays are 12 to 15 months, and insurance requires reauthorization every <strong>three to five days with no guarantee of coverage for any significant length of time.</strong> Plus there are costs associated with travelling to Montana every six to eights weeks for family therapy.</span>

<p>Long-term, I estimate my total need to be $75,000 (based on initial deposit, a 12-month stay and assuming one-third payment by insurance for the first several months, 7-8 required round trips to Montana, and an insurance coordinator to navigate the reauthorization process – I’ve mentioned that insurance companies pull no punches to wear you down to make you wanna quit, right??). I’ll be able to squeeze and save and take a loan for the remainder, estimated to be another $50,000-75,000. Right now, $14,200 will secure a bed for her this spring – as early as mid-March if what feels like a million things align in the next three weeks – and get me started for the first month to allow insurance to (hopefully) kick in, but more will be needed along the way. I have about $7,000 right now I have saved for this.  <b>As of 12/16/2021 I have increased the goal to $90,000 which is about half of what the total out of pocket will be.</b><br /><img src="https://d2g8igdw686xgo.cloudfront.net/54681990_1613914074357836_r.jpeg" alt="54681990_1613914074357836_r.jpeg" width="100%" media_type="3" /><strong>New Years Day 2020, on a visit to her great grandpa, with whom she shares a love of rocks and science. <br /><br /></strong>I’ve never reached out to friends or strangers for financial assistance, but the path for most kids like Lila is rough – abusive behaviors and relationships, addictions, institutionalization – and isn’t one that I can take alone or delay. Please spread this request through your networks. A little from a lot of people can do lot of good now and for years to come. Lila’s Love Bucket Challenge

Murdoch is a gentle shar pei who has led a terribly rough life. He was discovered several months ago wandering the streets of Indianapolis nearly hairless and bone-thin. He was taken in by an animal shelter and began to flourish under the loving care of their staff.


I adopted him in March when coronavirus struck and I needed a companion to share my life. Murdoch was the perfect dog -- only five years old and kind to every living creature he met from people to cats. I thought I had found the perfect friend. Murdoch and I were even featured in a story  from the Humane Society to encourage people to adopt animals during this difficult time.

But then 10 days ago he stopped eating. I took him to the vet on four separate visits and she became increasingly worried. A battery of tests finally revealed he has lymphoma. It has spread to his other organs. Murdoch needs chemotherapy to extend his life.

Murdoch means so much to me. He is my first pet as an adult and has been my constant companion during these solitary, social-distancing days. I know he will eventually succumb to this horrible disease but I want to give him the best life he can possibly have until then. But, it won't be cheap. I have nearly exhausted my savings to give him this last chance.

Please help me help Murdoch in this terrible battle.  He has already overcome so much in his life and I want to help him as he confronts his worst fight yet.  The funds you contribute will be used solely on his veterinary care.  If any funds are left, they will be donated to the American Humane Society.

The workers at The Florida Times-Union have been working diligently to provide our community with the latest news about the coronavirus outbreak. While working, we received notice from our company, Gannett, that it intends to cut our work hours and pay by 25 percent for April, May and June.<br /><br />Our labor union is requesting to bargain over any possible changes to hours or pay, but in the meantime, our journalists have to cover rent payments, medical bills and monthly expenses. Please support us as we try to take care of our families while working to cover the COVID-19 crisis.

<strong>Michael Cummings suddenly passed away on Monday, July 8, 2019 and is survived by his wife Melissa, son, Alex, 20 years old and daughter Sara, 14 years old. Michael began working at SSE just 2 short weeks ago and though he wasn't here with us very long, we quickly learned what a talented and caring individual we had on our team.  Our thoughts and prayers go out to his family in this time of sorrow.
