My name is Mirah and <strong>me and my partner are youth coming out of homelessness.</strong> After we both escaped DV from the past households we lived in, we started our homelessness journey. We managed to stay in Airbnb’s and found a job just before we were going to run out of our savings. As soon as we thought things were going well, we lost our car, which was a huge support for us, especially during a time like this. The job we had at the time was now gone, since our Airbnb was quite far from it and no buses traveled out to that location. We had a week to find somewhere else to stay or we were going to be out on the streets. As you can guess, we ended up there. We even tried living in a U-Haul, but with the constant expenses on it, we eventually had to give that up too. We decided to “camp” out around our local library where there’s a lot of wilderness, and we’ve saved every last dime we were able to come up with from selling almost everything we had before, just to find a place to stay. Of course, it’s been rough considering us needing to be able to afford saving up as well as our necessities while outside. The job search has been rough on top of that with the constant interviews just to be told no or applying and not hearing back. Recently, I was able to find a unit to apply for so we’d have a place to stay, and now I’m waiting to be moved forward in the process of getting accepted without any employment as well as the continuous interviews I have to be able to find a job as soon as possible. We only have about two months of rent saved up for whenever we do get accepted, but we’re hoping to be able to find a job soon enough in time so we won’t be back on the streets again. <strong>We’re hoping to raise enough to be able to afford necessities like transportation (the bus), food, hygiene products, etc.</strong> So that we’ll be able to put the funds we have saved up towards a place to stay or even a car if we’re still unlucky. I just recently started studying for my GED since, due to my past abusive situation, I was unable to graduate and had to drop out my senior year since that’s when I started struggling. My partner recently dealt with grief, and with all the stress life has put on us, she became mentally ill to a point where she needed help. Although it slowed us down a bit, we managed to get her the help she needs, which is all that matters, and she’s currently recovering from that while we get so close to making our lives better, safe, and stable! If you made it to the end, thank you. I’ve always been afraid to ask for any support or help, but while sharing my journey, it’s given me a bit more courage. Our Journey To A Stable Life!

<div>Aloha y’all.  Most of you know the last couple of years have been rough for me what with losing my lucrative job at Roy’s to the 2023 Maui Fires, losing my partner Dale a week later to epilepsy, and having to move back to Oregon three months later to become my mother’s 24/7 dementia caretaker.  But life keeps lifin’-and mine has decided to dole out another lesson in detachment and resilience.

<div>Last Wednesday afternoon, June 11, I had about an hour to pack up everything I could and evacuate myself, my parents, and our dog from our family home of almost 30 years to a single hotel room in our small town of The Dalles, Oregon.  The Rowena Wild Fire burned 3,600 acres- hot and fast, destroying everything we own that didn’t get thrown in the car.  It’s been 5 days now and it’s still going.

<div>While my parents have home owner’s insurance and will eventually be able to rebuild their home- the policy has a limit on contents and it’s not a lot to rebuild over eight decades of life.

<div>My goal with this fundraiser is to gather resources to support myself and replace/rebuild MY life, without drawing on the resources they will eventually receive from insurance.  It’s one thing to lose everything at 43 (44 on 6/24!), it’s another to have essentially lost your wife to vascular dementia and then lose all of your history and earthly possessions only to have to start over at 81 and support your adult daughter as well.  My hope is to ease the burden and mitigate the stress to my parent’s recovery by not having to use their resources to fund my own.

<p>“<a href="https://ftlo-nola.org" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">For the Love Of</a> – NOLA” is a non-profit organization dedicated to providing support for the underserved, marginalized and vulnerable people of the community in and around New Orleans.<br /><br />For The Love Of's mission is to provide support for the underserved, marginalized, and vulnerable people of the community in and around New Orleans via Free Pantries, Performing Arts, and Community Outreach. <br /><br />For The Love Of is a small New Orleans nonprofit and production company with a mission to help local and national communities that are too often marginalized, unheard, and/or discriminated against. Prior to Covid-19 and quarantine, we fulfilled our mission by producing LIVE shows featuring local comedians, poets, storytellers, musicians, and drag &amp; burlesque performers while dedicating the shows and donating monies collected to local/national non-profits. When it was possible, we invited guest speakers from those non-profits to share their message and mission. Throughout the years, we have raised money for and awareness of non-profits such as STAR – Sexual Trauma Awareness &amp; Response, LIFT Louisiana, and the LGBT Community center, to name a few.<br /><br />However, due to Covid 19 and not being able to produce live shows we’ve had the opportunity to reflect and grow.<br />In 2020, we moved our fundraising events to the internet!<br /><br />These virtual shows allowed us to cast performers from all over the country, run our campaigns for a week, and broadcast all over the country and world. For The Love Of - NOLA - Pantry & Hurricane Relief

WITHOUT ADDITIONAL SECOND WAVE FUNDING THE NAVAJO &amp; HOPI FAMILIES COVID-19 RELIEF FUND MUST STOP PROVIDING FOOD BOXES TO FAMILIES IN A MATTER OF WEEKS <br /><br />As of today (November 23, 2020), there are 15,039 positive cases of COVID-19 and 631 total confirmed deaths on the Navajo Reservation. This marks a spike of over 2,200 cases in 12 days on Navajo.  Numbers are also on the rise on the Hopi Reservation, and both tribal governments have placed their communities in lockdown again. Our relief effort is the primary relief effort providing assistance on both reservations.  We have already deployed roughly $6 million in direct relief in both communities, which has us nearing depletion of existing GoFundMe donations.  We need a second wave of donations to help us meet the second wave--tsunami, really--of COVID that is inundating our communities.  <br /><br />To date, the Relief Fund has raised over $6 million, and has spent almost all of that on bringing vital resources to Navajo and Hopi communities to help shield them from COVID. The team and a legion of hundreds of Navajo and Hopi volunteers all over the two nations has provided food and water to over 46,000 households (each roughly averaging 4 persons per household, and amounting to over 186,000 people served—which is more than the combined population of the Navajo and Hopi Reservations) in 335 distributions in over 530 Navajo communities and Hopi Villages. <br /><br />The Relief Fund currently seeks to raise enough funding to carry Navajo and Hopi families through this second wave, through the cold and flu season, and to the end of the COVID pandemic in these communities. We estimate needing $6.5 million in order to meet that goal, so we have now adjusted our GoFundMe campaign goal to $13 million total. <br /><br />By donating, you will help the most heavily impacted community in the USA.  For $100, you will help a family of four by providing them with 2 weeks’ worth of food and Personal Protective Equipment (PPE).  For as little as $10, you can help feed a family of 4 for an entire day.  Donate today to the Navajo &amp; Hopi Families COVID-19 Relief Fund. <br /><br />The Navajo Nation and Hopi Reservation are extreme food deserts with only 14 grocery stores on the two reservations to serve some 180,000 people who live in a territory larger than West Virginia, or larger than the combined area of Vermont, New Hampshire, and Massachusetts.  These communities have high numbers of elderly, diabetic, asthmatic, and cancer-afflicted (i.e., high risk) individuals.  One-third of the people living on these two reservations do not have running water, and another third don't have electricity.  These communities could be devastated by COVID-19.  <br /><br />Our relief effort prioritizes those at highest risk of complications if they contract COVID, and the most vulnerable:  the elderly, immunocompromised, mobility impaired, and families with children but inadequate income (roughly half of the people living on the two reservations are unemployed; 45.5 percent of Navajo families with children live in poverty, and 14.9 percent live in extreme poverty).  <br /><br />We provide our beneficiaries with food, water, PPE, health supplies, cleaning supplies and other essential items (like toiletries) they need to weather this pandemic.  The need is so great.  Please give if you can.  <br /><br />Each week since April 12 we have consistently brought $150,000 to $200,000 worth of food, water, PPE, and cleaning supplies to 15 to 20 Navajo and Hopi communities (each Kinship Care Package we hand out consists of 2 weeks’ worth of these materials). We have deployed over $4,060,196 in direct purchases of food and over $565,500 in PPE in Navajo and Hopi communities. We are currently in the process of deploying another $800,000 in PPE Kit supplies and 17 tons of coal for an elders heating program and will continue distributing the PPE Kits through the end of February.<br /><br />We sanitize all items before we distribute them, and we have a rigorous health and safety training for all of our staff and volunteers.  We are mostly all volunteers with 33 team leaders that each lead a team of 5-8 volunteers in the Utah, New Mexico, and Arizona portions of the Navajo Nation and on Hopi (located in Arizona).   Our 6 staff members are compensated through use of grant funding.  We do not use any of our individual donations through GoFundMe or made through our fiscal sponsor to compensate staff.  <br /><br />We bring our direct relief items by truck to Navajo and Hopi where our teams sanitize them and assemble Kinship Care Packages (include 2 weeks of food, water, PPE, health items, and cleaning supplies) or PPE Kits (include a container of 75-count Clorox wipes, 50-count 3-ply masks, and 8 oz. of gel hand sanitizer).  We distribute our food through contactless drive-thru or home deliveries.  We also provide immediate assistance to COVID-positive families in isolation or COVID-exposed families in quarantine by providing food and Isolation Kits (the Isolation Kits are extensive and include things like vitamins, tissue paper, cough drops, sleeping bags, etc.).<br /><br />We are also helping to stop the spread of COVID-19 on these reservations by engaging some 300 volunteers to sew masks for medical workers and first responders on Navajo and Hopi. We use donated funds to help purchase the fabric for these masks.  Through the masterful coordination of our Super Volunteer and now Logistics Coordinator, Theresa Hatathlie-Delmar, we have facilitated the transfer of some 73,441 masks, surgical gowns, bunny suits, and bootie covers to Navajo and Hopi community members and first responders.  <br /><br />We also receive and distribute in-kind donations.  For example, 48,000 cans of water from Jason Momoa and Mananalu, and 8 tons of canned water from Can’d Aid.  Through the Airbridge program held in collaboration with Air Serv International (in their first domestic relief operation) we were able to fly over 48,000 pounds of PPE and other relief items to remote Navajo and Hopi communities in July and August.<br /><br />We also use your donations to run a public education campaign urging folks to stay home, socially distance, and take precautions to prevent the spread of COVID-19.  These materials are on posters displayed in places of business all over the Navajo Nation and regularly run in 1-page ads in the Navajo Times.  Our Hopi material is under development and is poised for circulation in early December.<br /><br />We are a grassroots indigenous women-led group; we are not a government.  Given the amazing support for this effort, and the need to combat future pandemics and climate change threats to our communities, we formed a nonprofit under Utah state law (Yee Ha'olnii Doo d/b/a Navajo &amp; Hopi Families COVID-19 Relief Fund) and are in the process of applying for 501(c)(3) status.  Yee Ha'onii Doo expends our funds and operates under the supervision of a 501(c)(3) fiscal sponsor (Nonprofit Legal Services of Utah d/b/a Nonprofit Fiscal Services).  All funds raised prior to September 25th were deposited with Rural Utah Project (our original fiscal sponsor).  The funds from this campaign will be used to make direct purchases, or reimbursement of purchases by volunteers, of bulk food and medical items, and other purchases made on behalf of our beneficiaries, such as water, food from supermarkets, PPE, and other items necessary to keep our beneficiaries socially distanced, and our public education campaign.  <strong>This campaign is not associated with the Navajo Nation government (or the official Navajo Nation government’s fundraising campaign on GoFundMe) or the Hopi Tribe.  Instead, this fundraiser is an initiative of Yee Ha'oolniidoo, a grassroots, indigenous-led, nonprofit organization.   As of two weeks ago, the Navajo Nation had not expended any of its private donations raised through GoFundMe.<br /></strong>

<p>I have been encouraged by a handful of people in my life to create a Go Fund Me. 
</p><br />
<p>I am asking if you would consider helping me weather this storm. 
</p><br />
<p>As Brandi Carlile says, "You can dance in a hurricane, but only if you're standing in the eye.." 
</p><br />
<p>My cardiac bypass (CABG) surgery is now being moved up to May 22nd due to symptoms. Today they told me they would like me to be able to stay home until my sugery, but if anything chages at all they want to hospitalize me until my sugery. 
</p><br />
<p>I was hoping to be able to continue working, and I wanted to go to my senior's graduation before my surgery - though plans clearly changed. He says I'll just have to watch his college graduation 
</p><br />
<p>I have very humbly found myself continuing to tread water in the unprecedented storm of the past 6 months. 
</p><br />
<p>This time, I'm truly waving my white flag and directly asking for help myself. I'm so incredibly independent and want to do everything myself (oh and do everything for everyone else as well - obviously), and, well, for most of my life that has worked out for me. It is embarrassing for me to put this out there and ask for the help yet again, AND I also know I would give to others without the judgment I have for myself. 
</p><br />
<p>What I really need from my village is to share this far and wide. 
</p><br />
<p>I'm asking for positive thoughts, healing energy, love, strength, and prayers sent out into the universe to surround my family, friends, medical team, and myself during my surgery and recovery. 
</p><br />
<p>I'm also asking for any amount of donation people feel they can spare. Every little bit truly helps. <p>I have been off work a lot because of my current intermittent leave for my kiddo. I have already exhausted my paid leave Oregon and have no more pto at work. I don't have short-term disability and it takes 90 days for my long-term disability to be available, which will then only pay 60% of my income. 
</p><br />
<p>Due to my surgery, I will be off work for around 2-6 months. I need money need to pay bills, and I have no idea how much this surgery and subsequently being in the ICU will cost me. 
</p><br />

<p>I work in the NICU as a nurse. I have been a single mom the good majority of my life. Between my partner and I, we have 7 kids ranging in ages from 3 - 33. Our kids come from all different ways, biological, adopted, co-parented, etc. Ya know, kinda like the Brady Bunch, but not. 
</p><br />
<p>This is how the past 6 months have gone... 
</p><br />
<p>In December, I flew to San Francisco to be with one of my kiddos in the ICU who almost accidentally died after a fentanyl laced overdose. My kid had strokes and a left arm compression injury, and tragically, my kiddos' wife died. They were there on vacation. 
</p><br />
<p>My kid moved home to live with us to be supervised and work on rehabbing their arm, memory, and cognitive deficits. 
</p><br />
<p>Then, my partner's father had 2 separate strokes, and during this time, a very close uncle also died. 
</p><br />
<p>In March, my 26 year old had bilateral total hip replacement surgery and woke up with his right leg having very little movement. He had to go to rehab for 3 weeks, and then I had to stay at his house to help him. 
</p><br />
<p>April came along, and it was MY turn. I shockingly found out I have Cornary Artery Disease (CAD) and need a double bypass. 
</p><br />
<p>Did I mention this whole time we have also been working on potty training the twins. The best way to make this happen is to let them run naked at home. So.... when I take them to the park, they really don't understand why they just can't take their clothes off. I'm pretty sure they think I'm crazy for not letting them strip there, despite me pointing out that all their friends also have their clothes on. 
</p><br />
<p>People ask what led me to find out I need heart surgery because if you have been around me, you wouldn't have any idea. Up until recently, when my symptoms increased. It's still very surreal to me. 
</p><br />
<p>I have genetically high cholesterol, familial hypercholesterolemia (FH). My cholesterol is typically in the 400s. I also have high lipoprotein a (Lpa). I was diagnosed when I was 18 and didn't start meds until maybe my mid-20s since there were no studies of young people being on meds lifelong. I eventually hated my statins and stopped them. 
</p><br />
<p>Fast forward to a few years ago when I had a hypertensive crisis. I called 911 thinking I was having a heart attack - it turns out my blood pressure was 270/140. They kept me a couple of days and sent me home on BP meds. 
</p><br />
<p>Over the next 3 years, my question has been why... why did this happen? Why is my blood pressure higher when I am upright. I didn't want to just treat the symptoms. I changed jobs, which changed my insurance and providers, and that certainly slowed things down. I was persistent and still kept asking why. 
</p><br />
<p>In the meantime, while waiting for tests and playing the medical hurry up and wait game, I have avoided being super active knowing my BP gets so high when I'm up and walking around. I also know my anxiety greatly impacts my blood pressure as well. 
</p><br />
<p>While doing all of these tests, I've only had shortness of breath on exertion, like going up the stairs or walking fast. I attributed the SOB to being out of shape. 
</p><br />
<p>Long story short, eventually, my tests led to a cardiac CT, then angiogram, and here I am now awaiting bypass surgery. 
</p><br />
<p>Also, today, I went in for a left arm ultrasound because it has continued to hurt since my angiogram and I haven't had a palpable pulse. Turns out I have a thrombus, and they can't treat it with anticoagulants until after my heart surgery... cool cool. 
</p><br />
<p>Interestingly, I have joined some groups with other people who have CAD and needed bypass surgery. What I see is there are a lot that have genetically high cholesterol like me, yet there is this other group of people that run marathons, eat healthy, don't have high cholesterol, don't smoke and yet still have CAD. Many of them find out because they have a heart attack, and that's how they get there. This can be a silent disease. 
</p><br />
<p>Oh, how I wish our country focused on preventative care. 
</p><br />
<p>I'm so thankful I kept asking why and was able to get the tests I needed. As scared as I am, I also feel incredibly lucky that my heart is going to get fixed so I can come back even stronger. 
</p><br />

<p>Speaking of BCB - if you didn't know, I LOVE the band Brandi Carlile and I am a proud Bramily member with a multitude of concert memories. I'm REALLY hoping to be healed enough from my surgery to see them at Red Rocks in September. #GOALS #PRIORITIES.... this will be my focus!!

They called him FM for "Fat Man" because he was built like a brick house, but his personality was even larger. His smile could light up a room. Even as he lay in the hospital dying, he found a way to bust his family's chops and make people laugh.

<div>I'm creating this GoFundMe because, unfortunately, Bryan didn't have health or life insurance and couldn't get any after his diagnosis.

<div>Bryan was a mere 26 years old and newly wed to his lovely wife, Marysa, as of June 11, 2021. Bryan and Marysa celebrated the birth of their beautiful baby boy this past April. Though his son will unfortunately never get to know his father physically, our family is dedicated to making sure his son knows EXACTLY the kind of great man his father was.

<div>As the leading provider to his family, and due to this country's broken systems for disability (They made him wait weeks/months and then still gave him less than what he was entitled..), his family is left with little to no money. We'll be holding a memorial service, but there aren't even funds for a proper funeral/burial/ceremony, let alone anything to support his family. They have had to resort to selling his tools and items that should otherwise be keepsakes and heirlooms for his child just to make ends meet.

<div>Bryan has an incredible family that supported him throughout his life, especially during his battle with this terrible disease that takes so many from us far too often and far too young. 
</div>

<div>Bryan's life seemed to be coming together with his new marriage and newborn child; he'd been excelling at his job as a mechanic for Kia (he dreamed of being a mechanic, and dammit, he made it happen.) He also dreamed of being a loving husband and father, and he achieved that as well. The kid didn't have any "quit" in him; if he wanted something, he made it happen. He didn't have an ounce of "quit" in him, even in the end. 
</div>

<div>He was a devoted metalhead, often attending concerts with his family and friends, especially if Metallica or Five Finger Death Punch were in town. Bryan dedicated himself to his wife, child, and furbaby "Tank." Voted the class clown in high school, Bryan had a penchant for making sure people were happy, comfortable, and laughing whenever possible. 
</div>

</div>
<div>However, to put it simply and bluntly, there's <strong><em>nothing</em></strong> for his wife and baby. We aren't a wealthy family, and cancer came on so strong and quick that there wasn't time to prepare financially. There's going to be a silent auction and some other fundraising efforts, but his family quite literally doesn't know where the next rent check will be coming from, let alone the price of diapers and formula for his child, utility bills, food for his wife and dog, all the things we take for granted.
</div>

<div>In a true "it takes a village" fashion, we're asking the community to come together to help this family. Losing someone at any age is never easy, but at 26, he and his family had their whole lives in front of them. Having to mourn the loss of your husband and of your father is hard enough... not knowing how you'll keep the lights and heat on (as winter approaches in the mountains of West Virginia) is just cruel icing on the cake.

Just when you think you’ve done everything correct.... my Urologist and Oncologist are not in my network on my health insurance. Although I have fantastic medical coverage, when not in the network, it can get pretty steep. I’ve been diagnosed with terminal metastatic prostate cancer, stage 4 and am not working. We are doing fine with my retirement but medical is getting rough. I now have the best cancer hospital in the nation and they ARE in my network, but still playing catch-up with past medical bills and a couple items not covered. Any amount would help. Thanks!

Alicia McInturff very unexpectedly lost her life partner &amp; father of her daughter, Nate Laird. Nate was the sole income for their family, and being young, they were not prepared for final expenses. I am trying to raise funds for Alicia so she can take care of final expenses for Nate as well as have some cash to pay for household expenses until she can get another line of income established.

On the morning of August 25, 2020, about 7:00AM, a young lady was speeding and recklessly passing other motorists. As she tried to pass another car, she clipped the front causing her to spin out of control hitting and totaling our parked car. She also hit an electric pole to land finally against a pair of garbage cans. This special purchase allowed me and my family to pick up and deliver necessary food weekly to families in quarantine, our Elders, people with compromised disability/immune system and single parents. The vehicle provided the opportunity to give more food to our community members. It was a blessing not only to my family, yet the community we live in and serve. This was my way of giving back to my community.  We barely had the car for 2 weeks! The driver responsible for the accident has no license or insurance, and no money to recover for the loss of my vehicle. My insurance company doesn’t want to compensate for my loss although I am not at fault. Please help me continue to help my community. The world is in the midst of quite possibly the <a href="https://www.nytimes.com/interactive/2020/07/03/us/george-floyd-protests-crowd-size.html" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">largest civil rights movement in US history</a> . And Portland, Oregon &amp; NYC have been in the <a href="https://time.com/5872883/portland-activists-black-lives-matter/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">national spotlight</a>  for the last several weeks as examples of the brutal, disproportionate response from the local, state and federal government toward the civil rights protestors of the Black Lives Matter movement. <br /><br />Now, Moms United for Black Lives both Portland and New York City chapters are looking to take that tenacity to Washington DC to advocate for their communities and build solidarity on behalf of their cities during the upcoming August 28th March on DC. <br /><br /><img src="https://d2g8igdw686xgo.cloudfront.net/50192528_1596666561291402_r.jpeg" width="100%" media_type="3" alt="50192528_1596666561291402_r.jpeg" /><br /><br />New York took note of the hardship faced by the Black community in Portland, because that struggle is not unlike the struggle in NYC. Now, these two cities are joining together in solidarity to amplify one another's work. <br /><br />This bicoastal team of activists and organizers will be uniting for the March on Washington DC on the 57th anniversary of  Martin Luther King’s march on our nation’s capital.  <br /><br />These activists are leaders in their communities; they deserve the opportunity to exercise their rights and speak truth to power in Washington DC. It was <a href="https://www.washingtonpost.com/news/retropolis/wp/2017/06/07/when-portland-banned-blacks-oregons-shameful-history-as-an-all-white-state/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">illegal to be Black in the state until 1926</a> , less than 100 years ago. This racist history permeates everything from public policy to policing. It also greatly informed how the city of Portland came to be “<a href="https://www.theatlantic.com/business/archive/2016/07/racist-history-portland/492035/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">the whitest city in America</a> ” a moniker that still applies today. <br /><br />Daily life as a Black American living in Portland &amp; NYC is –in itself– an act of resistance. <br /><br />According to the <a href="https://www.census.gov/quickfacts/fact/table/portlandcityoregon,OR/RHI125219" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">most recent census</a> , Oregon’s population is nearly 87% white with only 2.2% being Black or African American and Portland  is 77% white with a 5.8% Black or African American population. <br /><br />So it’s no surprise that the white majority has maintained the below status quo treatment of Black residents and that the Black Lives Matter movement here has been met with such a violent response from elected officials. <br /><br />The ongoing fight for racial justice in Portland &amp; NYC is the fight for racial justice everywhere. These activists are ready to further amplify the voices of their community to a national audience at the march on DC. Please donate today to help these Black revolutionaries take this fight for Black Lives straight to DC’s doorstep. <br /><br />Your support is critical to amplifying the ongoing work and voices of these Black activists who have been doing this work their entire lives. MOMS UNITED FOR BLACK LIVES (PDX & NYC to DC)

My name is Victoria I live with my husband Phil Vanderyken, an artist and musician and our two dogs in an old shotgun house in the Black Pearl neighborhood in uptown New Orleans. <br />The Black Pearl was traditionally an African-American neighborhood that like so many others, has been thoroughly gentrified over the last ten years or so. We love our neighborhood and are proud to call our neighbors friends. Many of them are older African-Americans who have lived here most of their lives, raised families and have deep roots in the neighborhood. <br />Dorothy Hammett, Miss  Dorothy for short, is one of them. She lives across the street from us. She's eighty-three and has lived in the Black Pearl for more than thirty years, in a home that she shared with her late husband Elius.<br /><br />Monday June 8 was a very sad day in our neighborhood, like most New Orleans folks, I was relieved that Tropical storm Cristobal mostly brought a ton of rain. <br /><br />Miss Dorothy, however, was not so fortunate. That morning we got a frantic call from a neighbor. Apparently a strong wind had caused the floor of miss Dorothy's kitchen to collapse and fall unto the ground, thereby pulling down half the kitchen roof and destabilizing the entire house. Her bedroom ceiling came down. Thankfully she wasn't in bed. Her house, like all houses on our block, sits on piers and is almost 100 years old.<br />Miss Dorothy's house is tiny, maybe 600 square feet and on a small lot, it can be rebuilt. <br /><br />Miss Dorothy's been taking care of herself independently after her husband's passing, even through the pandemic, going shopping for groceries once a week, wearing her mask, sweeping leaves from her porch every morning. She mostly keeps to herself. In a few minutes her entire independence, her entire LIFE, was upended. Entergy came and took out the gas meter and cut the power from the utility pole.  She's at a neighbor's house, but she is now effectively homeless.<br /><br />We're heartbroken. She is a sweet soul who wanted nothing more than to have a peaceful old age in the neighborhood she's lived for so many years, among people she's known most of her life. My best friend, Traci Foust passed away unexpectedly on January 13, 2018. Traci was one of the strongest women I know. She battled Lupus for many years, and had recently been diagnosed with Pneumonia in both lungs. She was admitted into ICU, caught the flu and her immune system couldn't fight it any longer. She passed from cardiac arrest. Traci was the best friend I could ever want. She was an amazing mother, writer, daughter &amp; friend. Traci's first book Nowhere Near Normal was published in 2011, and was currently working on a book that will not be completed. Her boys need your help with a memorial fund, and for anything they deem necessary. Their worlds have been flipped upside down, and any help you may provide is very much appreciated. **PLEASE READ THE UPDATES**<br /><br />Two men were killed today because they stood up for two Muslim women who were being harassed on Tri-Met by a racist. Another was injured.  <br /><br />They are heroes, yet their families are not only going to be faced with the pain of losing people they love, but with financial hardships from their passings.<br /><br />I've started this GoFundMe to help them with costs as a result of their deaths and injuries.  All donations will go to the victim's families.  Hopefully the goal is just a starting point.  They will certainly need more than this. And no amount of money will ever lessen their heartbreak.<br /><br />CREDENTIALS<br />I have been getting more messages than I can keep up with asking who I am and why they should trust me.  I'm working a 12 hour shift today at work so it's more difficult than normal.  However, I thought I would update this with some information:<br /><br />1) I started this because I was looking around for somewhere to donate to the families of these heroic victims and couldn't find anywhere.  I lamented this online and then thought, well, why shouldn't I just do it.  So I did.  <br />2) I am not a member of the families or a close friend. I learned I have a friend who is related to Ricky Best, but only after I started this.  I have reached out to the families, but they are understandably concerned with more important things right now and most likely grieving for their terrible losses.  I am patiently awaiting someone from the families to help direct the donations where they belong.<br />3) GoFundMe gives 30 days to indicate where the donations will go.  While I didn't know exactly where they would go when I began this, I figured I would have time to figure it out.  I will be transparent about where all the money goes and it will only go to the families of the victims.  I just wanted to help and didn't know if it would be as successful as it has.<br />4) I am a restaurant owner in town who also occasionally writes for Willamette Week.  You can find me on Twitter or Facebook as Nick Zukin or "extramsg".  Others in the restaurant industry can vouch for my credibility as can people in the food press. <br />5) I have been talking with people at both GoFundMe and the Portland Mayor's Office in order to make sure that the process of distributing the funds is fully transparent and verified.<br />6) I am impressed and proud of our city's generosity.  These guys stood up for what was right and paid the ultimate price.  I'm glad we are helping their families as a community.

Hello many of you have heard to horrific news that Maddy West was in a head on collision Sunday morning, in which she sustained critical injuries.  Brigette Scott, is one of my most dearest friends and Maddy's mother.  I love the family with all my heart.  Maddy is currently in the ICU.   The family has been by Maddy's side around the clock creating a space of love, support, and healing energy.  At this time due to the extent of her injuries her path to recovery is uncertain.  Many people have reached out and asked what they can do to support Maddy and her family.  Please continue to pray for her and her family.  The family has also asked that if you are able please donate blood and platelets.  Maddy has has multiple blood transfusions, and they would love to see the blood and platelets replensished.  Additionally, Maddy was an active volunteer at the Red Cross while she was in High School and creating a plentiful blood supply was a cause close to her heart.  Finally, I am asking that if you are able please provide a monetary donation to help with extra expenses, bills, and time off work.  It is unclear as to when the family will be able to return to work as they are caring for Maddy.  Maddy is a beautiful strong soul with a fighting spirit and she can feel all the love, prayers, and support of her beloved people.  Thank you for being a part of Maddy's life and any kind of support you can offer.
