2023 Yard Signs! Buy yours, help another senior

<div>Want to join us making a difference? The Overlake School Outreach Club is raising money to benefit Avondale Park Transitional Housing to provide holiday gifts for the resident families, and any donation will help make an impact.<br /><br />For the past ten years, Overlake has supported families at Avondale Park through Holiday Helpers each December. Traditionally, homerooms, teams, departments, and families have purchased gifts from wish lists for Avondale Park residents. Due to the pandemic,  Hopelink is operating remotely and they are not meeting with residents face to face. Also, as an agency, Hopelink is moving away from holiday gifts and moving toward a more equitable gift card system so that everyone gets the same amount.<br /><br />So, the program had to change to be more equitable and to keep our community safe. Instead of purchasing gifts this year, we're raising the funds needed for gift cards. This allows the Avondale Park residents to have minimal contact and to still provide the support we've given historically.

<div>The goal of this project is to provide gift cards for each of the 30 families at Avondale Park transitional housing in Redmond. At Avondale Park, Hopelink provides emergency shelter, transitional housing, counseling and job training for homeless families getting back on their feet. These families are thrilled to have a safe home for their children, but are still struggling to meet basic needs and gain traction with steady employment and housing. Our goal is to ensure that each child at Avondale Park receives a gift or two this holiday season.

Winter Hopelink Avondale Fundraiser

<br />11/12/2018 <br /><br />Message from Beth:<br /><br />”Dear Overlake Community,<br /><br />As you may have now heard, my humble hometown of Paradise, CA is now recognized for the most destructive fire with the greatest human loss in CA history.  I wish you all could know it the way I've known it...a place of tranquil beauty, rivers, and a tightly knit community in the foothills of the Sierra Nevadas.  It is still remarkably tight-knit, despite this tragedy, and I hope the tranquility and beauty will restore with time.<br /><br />My extended family, my husband Ryan, and I, are safe along with many people we grew up with and have known for 30+ years.  Still, my heart sinks knowing that many did not survive or are still unaccounted for in this disaster.  Daily, fire and safety personnel continue to put their lives on the line to try and contain this devastating fire.  Many of them have lost their homes, but bravely fight on.  I watched a broadcast of a community meeting last night.  The sheriff and CalFire officials described how combined factors of extreme wind/weather conditions, drought, and location/terrain created the formula that generated this horrific fire storm.<br /><br />Tens of thousands, including my family, have been displaced, have lost homes/businesses/personal belongings, pets etc.  However, nothing is more valuable than human life and I'm left feeling extremely fortunate that my loved ones are safe and out of harm's way. There is very little you find you need in this world when you know the people you treasure evaded such a threat. Again, my heart is breaking for those who perished and those who’ve lost or cannot locate loved ones.<br /><br />Words cannot describe the support I feel coming from the Overlake.  It is hits me at my core to see so many colleagues, former students, parents and families from the past 13 years showing such support.  Service and compassion are in the fiber of the Owl community.  I know that deep conviction to offer help in any form in the wake of tragedy and I’m forever grateful for the amazing outpouring of love.  The future can be uncertain, but communities that work together bonded by compassion, curiosity, responsibility and action can rebuild just about anything they put their hearts and minds toward.  The school I'm working with now shares in those same values.<br /><br />I will meet with staff of Achieve Charter Schools, along with partners and county/state education officials tomorrow to nurture healing and to find out what may be next for our students and their families.  You can imagine that school becomes the next place of healing for children who’ve gone through a trauma such as this.  As I have more info. available re: any additional ways to support the school community(ies) I will let you know.  The cooperation amongst schools will be integral to us serving youth and their families.<br /><br />Beyond that, relief efforts already (on day 5) are yielding an abundance of supply donations that are stretching limited human resources to sort/distribute beyond capacity of storage and staffing.  Humanitarian Relief management is something we often study in our Service Learning program at Overlake and this is another example.  While grateful for the support to meet emergent needs, Aid coordinators share that, currently, the best way for others to help relief efforts is to donate in-kind to any of the following organizations who will ensure resources are allocated efficiently to those in need.  If you wish to continue to support relief efforts here are some added resources doing amazing work in the response and recovery process.<br /><br /><a href="https://www.norcalunitedway.org/camp-fire" target="_blank" class="" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer">https://www.norcalunitedway.org/camp-fire</a><br /><br /><a href="https://www.nvcf.org/fund/camp-fire-evacuation-relief-fund/" target="_blank" class="" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer">https://www.nvcf.org/fund/camp-fire-evacuation-relief-fund/</a><br /><br /><a href="http://www.wagsandwhiskerspetrescue.com" target="_blank" class="" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer">http://www.wagsandwhiskerspetrescue.com</a><br /><br />Thank you for the kindness and love you’ve shown to my family &amp; Beth Highland, Hope for Paradise

About a year ago, I was diagnosed with Cutaneous T-Cell Lymphoma (CTCL), a rare form of non-Hodgkin's Lymphoma. This is a blood cancer that affects my skin with raised rash-like patches. While this kind of cancer has a very high survivability rate, in order to keep it under control and prevent it from both spreading and worsening, I need regular dermatological treatments and hematological tests. Up till about a month ago, I was covered by Medicaid, but our family's income is now too high for me to qualify for this coverage. This has required me to purchase new health insurance on the marketplace. The frequency and type of treatment I need necessitated the purchase of a high-premium low-deductible plan, which overall will increase our family's expenditures on my healthcare from roughly $0 per month to around $1000 per month. I am trying to raise $15000 to cover the costs of insurance premiums, co-pays, and deductibles for the next year. Raising these funds will allow us to cover the costs of treating my disease and not experience extraordinarily high levels of financial stress as I try to beat this thing. My hope is that the new treatments I will be receiving over the next several months will help get my CTCL in check and make it so my expenses will not be as burdensome in the years to come. I would be happy to answer any questions anyone may have about my disease or the kind  of treatment these funds will help me cover. <div>Last month, Lilly Frank underwent a major spinal surgery, and many of you have reached out with words of support and generosity for her. We wanted to provide an important post-surgery update on Lilly.

<div>What was supposed to be one major surgery turned into something far more complex, much more costly, and a significantly longer process.
</div>

<div>Due to complications, her spine had to be reconstructed. After six to seven hours in surgery and significant blood loss, doctors had to end before completing everything that was planned for her safety. Lilly now faces a four-month recovery before undergoing a second surgery to finish stabilizing her upper spine.
</div>

</div>
<div>She spent a significant amount of time in the Acute Rehab unit at the hospital relearning how to walk, shower, dress, and climb stairs. At this time she is still unable to stand or walk on her own. We have recently transitioned her back into her home where she still requires major support through her recovery. Every night is a battle, but she is pushing forward with incredible strength.
