<div>When Rick was just 18 months old, Vanessa received the devastating news that no parent is ever prepared to hear. Rick was diagnosed with Infantile Tay-Sachs disease and they were told he may only have 2 to 4 years to live.

<div>This year, Rick turned 4 years old. And for the first time in a very long time, Vanessa is not only fighting for her son’s survival — she is witnessing hope, progress and precious moments she was once told would never be possible.

<div>Earlier this year, Vanessa took Rick to Florence, Italy, where he completed his first cycle of REAC treatment at the Istituto Rinaldi Fontani. Since beginning treatment, Rick has made incredible progress that has completely changed his quality of life.

<div>For the first time in years, Vanessa is seeing improvement instead of decline.
</div>
<div><br />
</div>
<div>Through daily physiotherapy and occupational therapy, Rick is becoming stronger, more responsive and more present. He is building stability in his body, learning to bear weight with support, spending meaningful time in his standing frame and breathing more comfortably as his swallowing improves.

<div>These milestones may seem small to some people, but for Vanessa and Rick, they are life-changing.
</div>

</div>
<div>The changes go far beyond physical progress.
</div>

<div>Rick has now been seizure-free for months after previously suffering up to 60 seizures a day. His immune system has strengthened significantly, and after spending so much of his life in hospital, he has had zero hospital admissions in the past six months.

<div>For the first time in his life, Rick is more comfortable, more peaceful and more engaged with the world around him.
</div>

</div>
<div>And Vanessa sees it every day — in his eyes, his smiles and his strength.

<div>To continue protecting and building on these incredible improvements, Rick urgently needs to return to Italy for two more REAC treatment cycles in July and October 2026.

<div>We are reaching out to you with a heartfelt request to support a beloved husband, father, grandfather, and friend, David Davidson, who is currently battling cancer of the lungs and brain. If you know Dave, then you already know him for the kind and generous person he is; always putting others before himself. Even getting him to agree to this campaign was a struggle, as he was thinking of other people first, not wanting to be a burden or cause an inconvenience.

<div>A little bit about Dave that you may not know already;

<li>He has a passion for photography. When the opportunity strikes, you can catch him out with his daughters taking pictures of scenery, festivals, and nature.
</li>
<li>He loves building computers. He taught me how to build my first computer from scratch in 2019, and we've built many others together since then. I can put one together in just under two hours now because of him.
</li>
<li>He is an avid Toronto Blue Jays fan. Even through a rough season like the Jays just had, David watched almost every game, and enjoyed talking about the new, young talent and prospects of exciting seasons to come.
</li>
<li>Dave had to persevere before. Many years ago he broke his back while at work, and he was confined to a wheelchair until he recovered enough to walk again. The lingering pain and side effects this injury caused, forced him to stop participating in one of his greatest passions; golf. Over the past two years, he has been able to get back into playing it with his daughter and family, bringing back a joy that was once taken from him.
</li>
<li>He is an animal lover, and dogs seem to know this about him. If you put Dave in a room with literally any dog, and that dog will make Dave their best friend within minutes. His dog Dexter can account for this!
</li>
<li>We won't hold this against him, but he has faithfully tuned in to every season and episode of Survivor since season 2. I could think of better ways to spend a Wednesday night, but nobody's perfect.
</li>

<div>Dave has a sharp wit and unwavering positivity that touches everyone who knows him. He is a dedicated family man that takes immense pride in his two children and seven grandchildren, who light up his world. Despite his courage and determination, Dave faces a difficult journey that will include daily radiation and chemotherapy treatments. These treatments will have a significant physical and mental impact on Dave, which will cause him to step away from his full time job indefinitely. Due to his age, he is ineligible for long-term disability benefits, which will put Dave in an even more difficult position during this challenging time.

<div>My name is Jean Samson, and I would like to introduce you to my beautiful niece Emilie Samson who is fighting for her life. Emilie has been a fighter since the moment of her birth. Born at just 27 weeks gestation, weighing only 2.5 lbs., she was amazingly strong from the start. Despite her tiny size, her spirit was undeniable, and she required very little medical intervention. Emilie stayed in the NICU at the Royal University Hospital in Saskatchewan for only two months before she was sent home with a clean bill of health. Because Emilie’s life began in this way, she has been determined to always live her life to the fullest. She has become an accomplished dancer, a proficient student, and an all-around exemplary person whose kindness and zest for life brings joy to everyone she is near. No one could predict the tragedy that was to come.

<div>In May of 2023, a month before she turned 18, Emilie began to experience pressure and pain in her head that stopped her from doing the things she loved. That year, after several hospital visits and worsening symptoms, Emilie returned to the Royal University Hospital in Saskatoon, SK where she was given a provisional diagnosis of Von Hillel-Landau Syndrome. Characterized by multiple tumors called Hemangioblastomas, this disease causes tumors that grow in the brain and on the spinal cord. Although they are not cancerous, these tumors are life-threatening, causing immense pain and suffering. VHL Syndrome is a rare disorder and affects one in 36,000 people. In Emilie’s case, three hemangioblastomas have been confirmed. One is in her brainstem and two on her spine. Without treatment, this condition is fatal. Genetic testing confirmed that Emilie does not have VHL, but the doctors believe there's a chance the tumors carry that mutation but the only way to confirm this would be doing a biopsy on the tumor which the doctors are unable to do as it would be fatal.

<div>At that time, Emilie’s medical team informed her parents that there were only two possible courses of action: Radiation treatments to attempt to shrink the masses in her brain and spine, or Surgery to remove the tumor in her brainstem which she would not likely survive. Emilie’s wish was to spend the summer that followed her high school graduation making memories with her family while she was still able, and they did. To support their daughter, Emilie’s parents have had to give up their jobs and live on limited income to be by her side.
</div>

</div>
<div>Over the last year, Emilie’s condition has steadily declined. In October 2023, Emilie developed hydrocephalus, a shunt was placed in Emilie’s head in the hope that the ever-building pressure on her brain might be eased. In January of this year, it became clear to Emilie, her family, and her medical team that her condition was deteriorating quickly, and that intervention was her only hope. In March of 2024, a hard decision had to be made. Radiation can come with terrible side effects, so they decided to attempt the resection of the tumor in Emilie’s brainstem. Upon reaching the tumor, the devastating truth was revealed: the tumor truly is inoperable.

<div>Next, Emilie’s team decided to begin radiation treatment, which consisted of 30 treatments over six weeks beginning in May. After these exhausting treatments, Emilie returned home to rest. She soon became symptomatic again and was readmitted to the RUH on August 4th. The shunt that doctors had placed in her brain was no longer enough and a second shunt was placed which required three more surgeries.

<div>Over the next two weeks, the shunts have proved to be ineffective and the ventricles in her head could not move the fluid on their own. They just would not drain. During this time in ICU, Emilie’s parents and brother have been by her side.
</div>
<div><br />
</div>
<div>Right now, Emilie is at the Royal University Hospital fighting for her life. She is suffering from excruciating headaches and uncontrollable pain throughout her body which means that this trained athlete and dancer can no longer walk, or even stand, on her own. She frequently loses consciousness and is experiencing vision loss. Emilie and her family are losing hope as she fights for her life in the very hospital where her life began just 19 years ago. With every day that passes, Emilie’s chances of survival are slipping away.

<div>She has one last hope. Emilie’s medical team have prescribed a drug called Belzutifan (also known as Welireg) as a last resort. They believe that Emilie’s tumor may respond to this treatment. This drug costs $23,000 per month. It must be taken for at least 3 months before any effects can be seen. This course of treatment is not covered by the family’s medical benefits or by Saskatchewan Health as they can not confirm the VHL and does not qualify for exceptional drug status in Emilie’s case. The medical team petitioned the drug manufacturer to provide the medication out of compassion, but this effort was unsuccessful. Emilie’s family has exhausted all avenues they have available to them, and their medical team has recommended a GoFundMe campaign be organized and shared with the public.

<div>Through this campaign, we hope to raise $100,000 to fund the purchase of this potentially life-saving medication, and to support Emilie and her family as they navigate this impossible situation.

This page has been created to assist a much-loved mother, wife, sister, friend, co-worker and overall awesome human being, Michelle Moon.<br /><br />Anyone who knows Michelle will understand that she is a strong and stoic individual, who is perpetually generous with those around her, while always reluctant to ask for help for herself.  It’s now time for those who have been touched by her generosity, kindness, infectious smile and caring nature to band together to make this unspeakably difficult chapter of her life a little more manageable. <br /><br />In late May of 2020, Michelle was diagnosed with a rare and aggressive form of cancer. She has battled through several rounds of chemotherapy, as well as many shifts in the course of her treatment plans and options, and is now awaiting her “Plan C”, a stem cell transplant.  Enduring all of this with two small children at home, not to mention amidst a global pandemic, is too difficult for most of us to even imagine.   <br /><br />We are endeavoring to make the financial strain upon this young family a little more manageable. Fayez has a very strong support system-his immediate family, extended family, and the London community. </strong><br /><strong>JazakAllah Khair****</strong><br /><br /><br />On Sunday June 6th at 8:40pm, the Salman Family were targeted in a hate crime on their daily evening walk when a 20yr old white male murdered them with his truck and drove away. All family members, aside from 9-year-old Fayez, have since passed away. Fayez is in stable condition but remains in the hospital. This attack has been confirmed by the London Police to a be premeditated hate crime against muslims, the perpetrator has been arrested and has been charged with four counts of first-degree murder and one count of attempted murder.<br /> <br />The London community is heartbroken in the wake of this devastating loss and act of hate. Mr. Salman Afzaal (46) was a physiotherapist and beloved member of the London community - whether at his local cricket matches or at the Masjid, the first thing to greet you would be his gentle and welcoming smile. His wife, Mrs. Madiha Salman (44) was in the process of working towards finishing her exams to obtain her PhD at Western University in Civil engineering; she was a brilliant scholar and a caring mother and friend. Yumna Salman (15), their daughter, a loving friend to many, was finishing up her grade 9 year at Oakridge Secondary School. Accompanying the family, was Yumna and Fayez’s grandmother (74), mother of Mr. Afzaal, who was a pillar of their family that cherished their daily walks. The family is survived by Fayez Salman (9) who is currently in the hospital and being supported by his extended family. <br /> <br />We understand that there is little we can do to ease the grief and trauma that Fayez and his extended family are going through, but we started this gofundme campaign to raise money so that the family can donate on behalf of the deceased. The family has indicated that they do not need financial assistance at the time however, if you would like to help and donate the money will be used as  Sadaqa-Jariya on behalf of the deceased. Sadaqa jariya is an important concept within Islam - it is a gift that not only benefits others in this life but also benefits us and our loved ones in the next. Salman Family Sadaqa Jariya Fund

<strong>URGENT HELP REQUESTED! We need your help to pay veterinary bills for a very lucky and sweet dog.</strong> Becky is a 10-month-old Korean Jindo rescue who has an amazing story to tell. She was born in a dog meat farm, but she got a second chance at life. Her parents, Dennis and Kimberlee rescued her and brought her to Canada just 3-weeks ago. We’re asking for your help with a third. Sadly, she was struck by a car and her medical bills are expected to exceed $10,000. We are dedicated to saving her and giving her the long‑life she deserves. Being the excited 10-month-old puppy that she is, she kept running away farther and farther away. <br /><br />Tragedy struck around 10PM when Becky found herself in the middle of the intersection of Markham Road and Painted Post Drive and was hit by a car. I was driving near the area and my heart dropped when I saw what happened. I ran to her as soon as I stopped driving, and when I found her, she was in horrific pain, shaken and crying on the road. I kneeled to comfort her and come to her aid. <br /><br />While she was hurt, in pain and shaken to the core, she was surrounded by 5 amazing members of the local community that stopped and came to her aid, including the driver. All of us carefully picked her up, wrapped her in a blanket and got her out of harm’s way. We carried Becky to safety into one of our cars. She curled herself up at the bottom of the passenger seat and you could see it in her eyes she knew she was in safe hands. The warmth of a toasty car helped her relax and gather herself.<br /><br />Becky is now at the hospital and she is receiving medical treatment. She has a fractured front leg and a bruised shoulder, but is otherwise well. She will be going into surgery on Monday (February 8, 2021). Her medical bill is estimated to be $10,000, but the love for this amazing puppy is just too strong. Please consider helping Becky, Dennis and Kimberlee get back to health and happiness.  Please help this dog get a chance at a full and happy life.  <br /><br />She has an amazing story, and Dennis and Kimberlee deserves some help with the medical bills. Dennis and Kimberlee rescued Becky from a dog meat farm, and gave her a second chance at life. She is incredibly lucky, and a sweet dog. At the same time, I am astounded how a busy community has come together in a moment of selfless need to help this loving animal during such a tragic event. Nick was diagnosed with Appendix Cancer, he has a rare type of cancer but thankfully it is a slow growing type.<br /> <br />Nick was been undergoing chemotherapy for about 9 months, he had some success with the last drug they gave him which started to shrink the tumors in his abdomen.<br /><br />Nick had a surgery in December that did not go as well as he hoped.   They were able to remove some of the “slime” from his abdomen but were unable to remove his Appendix or any of the tumors.  Due to the surgery they took him off of the Chemotherapy, but he is expected to resume by late January 2021.<br /> <br />Nick and his doctors are hopeful that the Chemotherapy will shrink the tumors enough that they can do a future surgery to remove the tumors and Appendix.<br /> <br />Officers from 43 Division have suggested a lot of idea’s to assist Nick in this terrible time.  The idea that Nick liked the best was to create a Detective Nick Ashley scholarship at Cedarbrae Collegiate here in 43 Division.  I have been in touch with the administration at Cedarbrae and they love the idea and are super supportive of this scholarship in Nicks name.<br /><br />Nick will be the person to pick the criteria for the student that gets awarded the scholarship, the school with pick the student based on Nicks wishes.  I am hopeful that Nick will be well enough and COVID gets under control enough for Nick to be able to award the student in person, he is really excited about this project.

Detective Nick Ashley Scholarship

Tharshika Jeganathan was a beautiful soul, full of energy and passion.  Tharshika's smile filled the room and she was loved by her family and friends. <br /><br />Tharshika migrated to Canada from Sri Lanka to what she believed would be a loving relationship with her husband. However, soon after her arrival, she was repeatedly abused by him. Several incidents of unreported domestic violence eventually led to the arrest of her husband, Sasiharan Thanapalasingam. <br /><br />Tharshika had no other family here but she was determined to move on from her past and to build a new life for herself in Canada. She stayed at a shelter immediately after the incident, and later found a new place to live, and a job to sustain her life in Canada and to provide for her family back home in Sri Lanka. <br /><br />Tharshika was a strong, dedicated woman that did everything she could to escape her traumatic relationship with her husband. However, her efforts came to a horrifying end on September 11, 2019 as Sasiharan attacked and killed her. <br /><br />Her friends in Canada would like to get Tharshika's remains to Sri Lanka so that she can reach her final resting place with her family. Her friends would also like to ensure that her family is taken care of while they mourn the loss of their loving daughter. <br /><br /><br />This GoFundMe is organized by ISEE INITIATIVE on behalf of the family and friends of Tharshika Jeganathan. <br /><br /><br /><em>ISEE INITIATIVE is a non-profit organization based in Toronto with an aim to provide education and create awareness about domestic violence among all individuals in order to overcome socio-cultural barriers and offer multi-level support in the empowerment and rehabilitation of domestic violence victims.</em>

In Memory of Tharshika Jeganathan

On Sunday June 10th, 2018, our loving brother/friend/favourite DJ went boating across Lake Ontario to enjoy his Sunday evening. Things took a turn for the worse when Theepan fell from the boat. Since that Sunday night, Theepan has not been located and his whereabouts are still unknown. Several of Theepan’s friends and family have been searching for him day and night hoping to find him. A social media hashtag #BringBSoulHome was made in hopes to raise awareness and inform the community to keep an eye out for him. <br /><br />Theepan left Sri Lanka at the young age of 10, where he lived away from his parents for 17 years. He was the only son and sent money to his parents back home to support them every month. He financially supported his family from the time he got his first job and has continued doing so every month. Both Theepan’s parents and his sister are back in Sri Lanka anxiously awaiting news regarding their loving son and brother. <br /><br />This page is dedicated mainly to support his family financially. Since Theepan’s whereabouts are still unknown we would like to ensure that his family is still able to receive the same support. <br /><br />Theepan is a selfless and genuine individual, his work and career has been set in stone and he is known for being an amazing person within every community. His music is his passion and his smile is as sincere as can be. He worked hard to become the icon he is, and it came with dedication and hard work. He is iconic and broke many barriers within his career. In Memory of Anne Marie D'Amico

On Monday, April 23, 2018, a Toronto van mounted the sidewalk and ran over innocent pedestrians on Yonge Street south of Finch Avenue, killing 10 people and injuring 15 (<a href="http://www.cbc.ca/news/%20canada/toronto/pedestrians-str%20uck-white-van-1.4631564" target="_blank">News Article</a> ).<br /><br />One of the victims of this horrific incident was Renuka Amarasinghe, single mother of 7-year old Diyon Amarasinghe, who is now stranded in Canada with no one to care for him. We refuse to accept such a fate, and would like to help Diyon secure a bright future!<br /><br />We will use this money to help Diyon with necessary expenses and set up a fund for his education.<br /><br />Diyon is a member of the Toronto Mahavihara Sunday School and has been in contact with members of the Lotus Youth Council previously. <br /><br />UPDATE 2018-04-26: <br /><br /><span style="text-decoration:underline;">We are committed to setting up a trust fund for Diyon once the legal formalities are completed.</span> <br />Currently, <span style="text-decoration:underline;">Renuka and Diyon's lawyer is working on obtaining Renuka's death certificate for this purpose</span>. Diyon is residing with a friend of Renuka's currently, and the Toronto Mahavihara is in contact with them at all times. <br /><br />The Lous Youth Council is affiliated to the Toronto Mahavihara which is a registered charity under Revenue Canada for over 20 years (Charity No.119266898RR0001). The Lotus Youth Council is working with Renuka's lawyer and the Toronto Mahvihara temple to ensure all this money is put to the use of Diyon's future. <br /><br />As for now, funeral arrangements for Renuka are being made. This is a testament to the kindness and generosity of the human spirit and we are grateful for all the support received thus far.<br /><br />Diyon is under the care of Renuka’s friend while matters are being settled and the Toronto Maha Vihara has been in frequent contact with them. <br /><br />A meeting was held yesterday (April 27) at the Toronto Maha Vihara to discuss Renuka’s funeral arrangements and Diyon’s Trust Fund. There were many participants including from the Sri Lankan Tamil and Muslim communities, as well as Mr. U.L.M  Jauhar, Consul General of Sri Lanka, Mr.  Gary Anandasangaree’s , MP Scarborough-Rouge Park, representative and Toronto Victim Services staff.<br /><br />Renuka’s mother and sister are travelling from Sri Lanka to Toronto to attend Renuka’s funeral, with Toronto Victim Services arranging their travel.<br /><br />Preliminary discussions were held on establishing Diyon’s trust fund. General consensus was to appoint a Board of Trustees to oversee the responsible distribution of funds to Diyon’s guardians and Diyon, once he reaches the age of majority. The Board of Trustees will  comprise of Toronto Maha Vihara and Lotus Youth Council members. Further discussion and steps, including the appointment of Trustees, will be taking place soon and is on-going.<br /><br />These are difficult times and issues to navigate. That is why we are taking the necessary time to discuss and plan the best and right course of action for all involved. Over 1000 community members were present to pay respect and offer their final goodbyes.<br /><br />As of Monday May 7th, 2018,  12 noon, the fund is now  officially closed. We would like to thank each and every one of the donors for their boundless generosity. We have far exceeded our goal, and this is a testament to the kindness and boundless generosity of the human spirit. <br /><br />The Legal Advisor of the Toronto Maha Vihara Society has started the process to establish a trust fund for Diyon.
