<div>Frances is almost 12 years old. We first started to notice something wrong when she was 3. She was diagnosed with speech and other developmental delays along with ADHD.

<div>What started as seemingly subtle delays and inattention eventually turned into tremor, drop seizures, and myoclonic jerking.

<div>Recent evaluations show she is half her age developmentally, and via genetic testing we recently received a definitive diagnosis.
</div>

<div>Frances has an extremely rare genetic mutation of DHDDS. She is 1 of 6 known cases in the world. While there was no hope for a cure a decade ago, medical science is now in the experimental phases of developing treatments for rare diseases.
</div>
<div>Unfortunately, because this is so rare, it receives very little research funding. These types of diagnoses leave families isolated and overwhelmed with the gargantuan task of raising the funds that go to improving and hopefully saving the lives of the people they love. There is no insurance company to go through. There are no medications that exist.

<div>Due to the lack of data and people diagnosed with it, our only hope that has emerged so far is personalized medicine. We are yet to have confirmation that Frances is a viable candidate. Every day that goes by is a ticking clock. For the few people/kids diagnosed with DHDDS, desperately chasing researchers and scientists is a full time job. These treatments can take time to develop which can be a terrifying thought. They can also cost up to 5 million dollars.

<div>Frances has changed our lives with her compassion and strength. We want to continue to see her laughing, singing, dancing, telling stories and jokes, giving hugs, and being her magical social self. Help us alleviate her physical and mental challenges that cause her so much frustration, anguish and pain. She is approaching adolescence which for some with rare neurological disorders can be the beginning of decline.

<div>So far she already experiences seizures, hypotonia, ataxia, scoliosis, tremor, migraines, anxiety, frequent nausea and vomiting, photosensitivity, joint pain and muscle weakness. All a direct result of this disease. We live in fear daily that the worst is yet to come.

Frances Changed My Life - Our search for a cure

<div>Our little angel, my daughter Dana, is a 19-year-old young woman. She's mature, kind, calm, intelligent, and very bright. She was a sophomore at UCSC. She has excellent academic grades, is a ballet and folklore dancer, an avid swimmer, and an active advocate for social rights. She was living the normal life of a college student far from home... On Saturday, April 26, she called me from the hospital in Santa Cruz, California, crying and telling me, while fearing, that her face was numb on the right side and that the CT scan had revealed a brain hemorrhage. I was in shock with my cell phone on speakerphone in San Diego. Erik and Danilo, sitting next to me, heard Dana's shocking call. My first reaction was to answer: "Don't worry, mija! You're already in the hospital, and everything will be okay. It's God's plan!" The three of us flew to be with her. Dana was stable in the ICU for four days, and on her tenth day of hospitalization, she underwent surgery for a midbrain hemorrhage due to a ruptured arterial/venous cavernous malformation. Her first three days after surgery were critical and exhausting. My daughter fought to live, and I was devastated, praying and looking for a thousand ways to help her, monitoring her progress as a mother, and constantly communicating with her understanding doctor, to whom I am deeply grateful. She learned to swallow, speak, sit, and walk again. Today, she continues speech therapy, physical therapy, occupational therapy, and psychotherapy three days a week. The entire family is convinced that she will make a full recovery with time, patience, and continued hard work, but above all, with God's grace. We have so much faith!

<div>This event changed the way we live. Life. It touched our souls, it broke us, and we have been healing them little by little every day. Watching my daughter live this great suffering almost drives me crazy. However, I know that all human beings must live day by day. One day at a time. God has never abandoned us—my Dana, my family, and me—and I fully trust in His mercy!

Sousa Family Tragedy

Let me tell you about my friend, Jeremy. Jeremy is a loving, dedicated husband, father to two smart and fearless girls, and a beloved brother and son. He is funny, compassionate, and a friend to everyone he meets. At just 38 years old, he also is living with a rare and painful disease that requires a liver transplant.<br /><br />As some of you may know, Jeremy has Primary Sclerosing Cholangitis (or PSC)—a rare, genetic liver disease that is terminal without a liver transplant. There’s no medication or treatment or cure for the disease other than liver transplant. And because Jeremy has both PSC and Ulcerative Colitis, he also has an increased risk of several cancers including colon cancer and bile duct cancer.<br /><br />Jeremy has had three hospitalizations due to repeat Cholangitis in the past three months, a common infection in PSC patients. The disease causes jaundice, intense and painful itching, nausea, vomiting, fever and chills and several other symptoms that are difficult to manage, even with medication. <br /><br />A living donor liver transplant is the best chance Jeremy has to live. The sooner his transplant happens, the greatest his chances are for recovery.<br /><br />There is reason to be hopeful. Many, many people registered to be evaluated to be a living donor for Jeremy. We found out this week that only 1 even has the potential to be a match and he is having his own evaluation at the end of September. We will find out early October if he is a match. Jeremy is 6’7" tall, which means he needs a larger portion of the donor’s liver than most people. And while many of the donors were a match in other ways like blood type and in good health, they didn’t match due to their height and size. <br /><br />As you can imagine, even with health insurance, Jeremy's possible transplant will be very expensive, and he and is family will incur tens of thousands of dollars in medical bills, and lost wages (for Jeremy, and his wife, Christie), as well as donor expenses such as medical care, lost wages, airfare, and accommodations. <br /><br />This is where you can help. Please consider donating any amount you can to help Jeremy and Christie defray the costs of his transplant. They are under so much stress and pressure right now, waiting to see if their possible donor is a good match, we can help them by easing their financial worries. Any amount you can give is helpful. In loving memory for Paula Teña mother of 4 ♥️

In mid January we lost  our beloved friend Scotty Bell.  Scotty brought so much love and light into this world.  He was a brilliant mind, a kind soul, a caring friend, and was someone who truly lived life, always going after the next adventure. He had a deep love for the outdoors and being in nature. Many of us who knew him most likely spent some time with him in a forest, on the beach, or soaking in a hot spring.  We would like to continue spreading Scotty's light and love of nature by getting a bench in his honor on the Sonoma coast along Highway 1 through Sonoma County Regional Parks. We appreciate any and all donations and are so grateful for this unbelievably supportive community. We love you and miss you Scotty.

Sometimes terrible things happen to the most incredible families. In our family, we have learned that our niece, Emeline, has been diagnosed with a vicious disease of the white brain matter. A disease without a cure.<br /><br />OUR STORY<br />This gorgeous smiling face you see is baby Emeline Smith, a beautiful ten-month-old baby who was born to the two most incredible people I have ever met.<br />Her mommy, Melissa, is a hair stylist in Santa Rosa and her daddy, Jarod, a surveyor for the water agency. Everett, is her loving older brother and the best big brother ever.<br />Just weeks ago their simple and seemingly perfect life was turned upside down. Baby Emeline suddenly was unable to hold her head up. The first doctors to examine Emeline believed she had contracted a very rare but treatable virus called infant botulism. These first doctors were almost positive this virus was what was causing her symptoms so they chose to treat her with the appropriate medication for botulism, discharged her, and, awaited confirmation from the test results.<br />Days later Emeline was due to have a follow-up appointment to check her progress. At that appointment the doctor sent them immediately to Oakland as she was highly concerned that not enough progress had been made after the treatment. When they arrived in Oakland they too believed it was botulism but wanted to make sure. So they kept them there awaiting the results of the test to confirm the diagnosis.<br />Melissa and Jarod were shocked to find out that in fact, the botulism test came back negative. With this devastating news, as they now had no idea what might be wrong with baby Emeline, they were scheduled for an MRI the following day to try and figure out what was causing their sweet baby to suddenly be unable to hold her head up and lose all motor function.<br /><br />On April 19th, Melissa and Jarod’s life changed forever. They were told by a team of doctors the MRI showed a disease in her brain that affects the white matter of her brain. They were further told that this disease is progressive, is inoperable and has no treatment.<br />To obtain a second opinion, to ensure that this diagnosis was correct, the family traveled to Stanford where baby Emeline was firmly diagnosed with Leukodystrophy, the proper name for this devastating disease.<br />OUR HOPE<br />Absent a miracle, Melissa and Jarod’s main priority is to be at home to ensure that whatever time is left for baby Emeline be filled with love, magic, wonder and joy. Melissa and Jarod do not know how much time with Emeline they have but do know, they want to spend as many moments with her and as a family as they can.<br />SO many of you have asked us how you can help. These funds will assist in her care at facilities that may not be covered by Kaiser, and, much more, help this family stay home as much as possible to provide direct and loving care to Emeline as they navigate this brutal disease.
