<div><strong>In the Indian Himalayas of Ladakh, nine girls aged 8–14 are chasing a dream few thought possible: becoming competitive figure skaters and representing Ladakh and India.</strong>

<div>They come from small villages where ice skating happens on frozen ponds for only a few weeks each winter. Despite these challenges, and with extremely limited access to rinks and coaching, they have already won <strong>ten medals at the 2024 &amp; 2025 Indian Figure Skating Nationals </strong>and earned <strong>silver and bronze at Khelo India 2026</strong>.

<div>I have had the honor of coaching this figure skating team over the last 4 years in Ladakh. Starting from small village based camps I was running, I started to seek out the most passionate and eager girls in the area for further figure skating training. Over the past years their commitment to the sport has only grown as they seek out every chance to skate and improve their skills.

<div>From <strong>May 2–10</strong>, India is hosting a national training camp in <strong>Dehradun</strong> led by <strong>Daniel Wende</strong>, an international coach and former Olympic figure skater. For these girls, this camp represents an opportunity to train full days on Olympic‑size ice, receive professional coaching, and raise their skating to a national and international level—without having to travel abroad, which is otherwise beyond their means. This camp will prepare them for the upcoming <strong>National Competition</strong> June 25-30, where the skaters will represent Ladakh.

<div>After decades as a disappointed World Language student of eight languages at some of the world's most prestigious institutions, and years as a disappointing World Language Educator, Constanza Ontaneda was finally introduced to the methodologies that <em>actually</em> lead to language acquisition. It turns out that those methodologies also have the power to heal entire schools, bringing a degree of joy, freedom and learning into the classroom environment that then seeps out into the wider school culture.

<div>And yet, the <strong>materials available were disappointing</strong>, and made the work difficult. So, Constanza wrote and designed all materials for her students for years before deciding to go pro, and offer the materials to educators and learners worldwide.

This is why we decided to revive our old and abandoned school greenhouse using permaculture principles and turn it into Armenia's first <strong>Permaculture Teaching Lab</strong>. By educating people of all ages and backgrounds across the country,  we aim to help make the production of food more sustainable. At the same time, the greenhouse will supply our community with healthy and nutritious food.<br /><br /><strong>When was the greenhouse built?</strong><br />Our greenhouse was built in 2011 thanks to Susan Prentice, a former Peace Corps volunteer. She envisioned it to be a teaching greenhouse for the school after noticing that students were taught primarily by lectures in conventional classrooms and had few opportunities for learning in any other environment. She was able to receive funding through USAID to make the initial vision of the teaching greenhouse a reality and this is what it looked like.<br /><br /><br /><br />However, after Susan left the plastic covering of the greenhouse started to degrade and slowly the greenhouse fell into disrepair and was no longer used.<br /><img src="https://d2g8igdw686xgo.cloudfront.net/62063095_1642855746551453_r.jpeg" alt="62063095_1642855746551453_r.jpeg" width="100%" media_type="3" /><br /><br />That was until last year, when we formed our team of students aimed at giving our old greenhouse a new and long-term purpose that would not only benefit the students at our school, but all of Noyemberyan, its surrounding villages, and eventually, the entire country!<br />To serve this long-term purpose, we will no longer be using a plastic cover but will be converting it into a glasshouse. This will be more expensive but glasshouses have a life of over 60 years and are easier to maintain, which will give us more time and energy to focus on year-round permaculture education and awareness-raising!<br /><img src="https://d2g8igdw686xgo.cloudfront.net/62063095_1647695047565024_r.jpeg" alt="62063095_1647695047565024_r.jpeg" width="100%" media_type="3" /><br /><br /><strong>In April 2022 we invited Permaculture expert Zach Mermel from the USA to help with the permaculture design of our greenhouse. Susan made sure that the greenhouse was built next to the school's boiler house (used for generating heat to heat the school's buildings) so that excess steam could be used to heat the greenhouse! This will allow us to continue to use the greenhouse for teaching and growing year-round! It is also a good example for teaching the importance of using waste as a valuable resource, which is one of the main principles of permaculture!</strong><br /><br />During the past 4 months, we have managed to raise a large portion of the money required to repair the greenhouse. <br />A grant from The Calouste Gulbenkian Foundation worth 3630$<br />EVZ Foundation MEET UP! We will receive our compost worms and produce our own worm castings out of all the organic waste our school produces, including paper waste!<br />We are also getting our compost bin from ISSD Armenia!<br />The Agrarian University of Armenia is helping by providing the expertise of their greenhouse specialist Naira Gasparyan and their Advisor on Environmental Curricula Emil Gevorgian.<br /><br /><img src="https://d2g8igdw686xgo.cloudfront.net/62063095_1653821279159547_r.jpeg" width="100%" media_type="3" alt="62063095_1653821279159547_r.jpeg" /><img src="https://d2g8igdw686xgo.cloudfront.net/62063095_1653821301199931_r.jpeg" width="100%" media_type="3" alt="62063095_1653821301199931_r.jpeg" /><br />We have also already embarked on this mission of raising awareness on permaculture through the creation of <strong>the first Armenian Permaculture Facebook group</strong>, where we share our progress. Support us in constructing buildings for organizations led-by and supportive-of Black, Indigenous, and People of Color(BIPOC) in our communities. We have a caravan of carpenters ready to hit the road in March 2021 to work with Cooperation Jackson and then the Ndn Bayou Food Forest.<br /><br /><strong>THE PROJECTS</strong><br /><br />First we’re going to Jackson, Mississippi to spend a week working with <a href="https://cooperationjackson.org/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Cooperation Jackson.</a> “Cooperation Jackson’s basic theory of change is centered on the position that organizing and empowering the structurally under and unemployed sectors of the working class, particularly from Black and Latino communities, to build worker organized and owned cooperatives will be a catalyst for the democratization of our economy and society overall.” As the co-op acquires homes and buildings from negligent landlords, we'll be offering our carpentry skills to get those spaces livable. We’ll be working on two houses that the co-op has purchased - beginning with replacing windows, some structural repairs, and running plumbing and electric. <br /><br />Then we head to Rayne, Louisiana to work with the <a href="https://www.patreon.com/BayouFoodForest" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Ndn Bayou Food Forest</a>. This land project began as an indigenous-women-led resistance to the Bayou Bridge Pipeline, the southern-most leg of the infamous Dakota Access Pipeline through Standing Rock, and has now been working to grow and build systems to heal the Earth and sustain life. “We want to make food free. That means diversifying local production - a field that once grew only sugarcane for fuel ethanol now grows avocados, sweet potatoes, mulberries, bananas, beans, kale, figs, catfish, okra, watermelon, squash, turmeric, basil, broccoli, cabbage, collards, and more.” We’ll be finishing up their common shower house, working on their nursery, and building a small cabin on the property.<br /><br /><strong>YOUR CONTRIBUTION<br /></strong><br />A contribution to this project would help the participants with gas for driving, food for the crew, an emergency fund, insurance for tools, and some materials. What we have left over will get split between the two recipient organizations and Just Construction. Anything helps and is greatly appreciated!<br /><br /><strong>BACKGROUND</strong><br /><br />Just Construction is working on the built environment of a more just future, focusing on social justice and environmental harmony. We intend to offer building projects for low cost or free to organizations uplifting BIPOC communities. We hope to make homes and buildings affordable for these movements by offering our building skills, offsetting material costs with donations, and will teach our skills in an effort to further empower each other.<br /><br />Vermonters like to say “we welcome refugees”, but where are they going to live? Where are they going to keep their chickens?! We believe that the more infrastructure we can create for leaders of color the more we can not only make good on Vermonters’ word, but we can expand the capacity for leadership in the twin climate and racist crises. The team we bring down south will come back galvanized for the projects we’ve got lined up for the spring and summer in Vermont. Get in touch if you want to help! Just Constr. Builders Delegation to the Deep South

M.O.C. is a first-year outing club whose mission is to provide all students with the chance to explore safe adventures locally and in the forests, mountains, and waters of Maine.  <br /><br />In our first fall we offered afternoon hiking and mountain biking trips, as well as two overnight camping trips.  We hope to get out skating, skiing, and to indoor rock climbing gyms this winter, with another two spring overnights in the works.  We have had 20 students on each overnight, and our afternoon trips drew about 10 students each, and those numbers will likely increase as we build up our gear library to give all kids access to quality biking, skiing, and camping equipment.<br /><br />Renting trailers of XC skis, vans for transportation, and camping equipment all come with a cost.  Some of these costs can be eased if we get to the point that we own equipment rather than rent it each time.  Funds raised through this and all M.O.C. events will go towards necessary equipment for students new to camping and outdoor sports, and will also help us float students who may not be able to pay the $5-$20 cost to go along on some of our off-campus trips.  <br /><br />A donation of $10-$20 would allow a couple students who couldn't otherwise pay for an afternoon or overnight trip to come along.  A donation of $25-$50 would allow us to purchase quality used or new gear like sleeping pads/bags.  Donations of $50-$100 would allow us to build up a set of tents, bikes/helmets, skis, or go towards renting a van, reserving time at a climbing gym or skate rink for some fun off-campus adventures.
