He has collaborated with countless local artists to produce many performances and recordings, including the Overlapping Halos: The Poetry of Hafiz album in which his violin became pure prayer; Poetry in Motion, where he helped create a work combining poetry, aerial movement, and music; and performing the premiere of a concerto, "Big Sur," composed by John Wineglass.

Recently, his white blood cell count dropped too low, and an infection was discovered—forcing them to postpone his second treatment while working to get his count back up. This is the reality of chemo: unpredictable, exhausting, and requiring Edwin to step back from the touring, teaching, and music-making that sustains both his spirit and his livelihood.

<div>On Saturday, October 26th, my brother Rip suffered a stroke and has been in the hospital ever since, where the recovery process has been very slow and difficult. <strong>He is in desperate need of physical therapy</strong> but is currently only receiving about 20 minutes of therapy each day and is being neglected for the rest of the day. On September 19th, management notified the committee that they were only willing to offer a freeze for the 24-25 season (which is already underway) but would offer no multiyear agreement.

<div>This is the same agreement they offered for the 23-24 year (freeze in pay), though when negotiations begun in May, their first offer was to cut the choral budget by 80% and cut choral programming by nearly 50%.

<div>Unbeknownst to most people, Susie had a diagnosis of breast cancer right before her husband Rob passed away. She underwent a single mastectomy and radiation. On top of all that, she had been struggling with interstitial cystitis for years.

<div>Rob’s eldest son Jackson came home from college to visit him. The light that came into his eyes was absolutely beautiful.

<div>Rob has been diagnosed with Stage 4 metastatic colorectal cancer. His family is all banding together to help, but the medical expenses are piling up fast. The family is considering an alternative treatment as traditional chemotherapy has proven ineffective. We are hoping to raise funds to cover the cost since this treatment is not covered by insurance. <div>Here's the updated story: 20 years after graduating from the University of Southern California the first time, I was accepted to return to study in a related field—Conducting. I have been working toward an M.M. in Choral Studies, and will audition for their Doctoral program this month.

<div>As someone with lots of experience as a singer, it has been incredibly fruitful and humbling to be a novice again as a conductor. (Don't worry, I still sing plenty!) The instruction at USC has been eye-opening, life changing, and re-invigorating. This photo is from my Instrumental Conducting final wherein after a semester of mentorship from the lovely Larry Livingston, we conducted a movement from Beethoven's 2nd Symphony from memory, leading a live orchestra.

<div>USC is a wonderful school with a great reputation for music, and other graduates from this same program are doing impactful things in the world. It is a pricey school, though, and I am still paying off a six-figure debt from my days as an Early Music student there so long ago. I don’t have regrets—it was a vital formative experience and the relationships I forged back then bore wonderful fruit. However, I seem to have hit a limit in my student loans— Even with the scholarship I’ll be receiving, this final semester's past due tuition bill is beyond reach without a little help, and the government seems to be tapped out.

I was attempting to start a business, Slamhomes.com, which was disastrously underfunded with just the little funds I had.   We built some homes and started running out of money during the pandemic.

<div>I am about to ask for financial help for one of my family members, who lost their apartment and is currently hospitalized, but first, I think it would be helpful to give a bit of background.

<div>My nephew, Charles got evicted at the end of April. He's been sleeping in hotel rooms, when he has the money for it, but mostly in his car. And recently, he ended up back in the hospital. Charles is in his early 30's and suffers from quite a few serious medical issues (heart, kidney, breathing issues, etc). He spent most of his adulthood helping out his dad, my brother, Shakir. He drove a cab off and on, but then ended up as a full time caretaker for his father.
</div>

</div>
<div>When his dad died at the end of 2019, Charles moved in with his mom and sister and got his first full-time job. He was underpaid but he had a job, and was able to help the household. And during the pandemic, he became the primary income. As I said earlier, he has had quite a few medical issues, and this year, he was let go after missing too much work due to sickness and hospitalizations. He just couldn't catch up. When he lost his job, he also lost health insurance. They lived off his minimal savings as long as they could but eventually, the money ran out.

<div>Charles can't afford medical care without being hospitalized or going to the ER. His mom and sister are juggling part-time jobs but just can't make enough to cover rent. When he sleeps in his car, it makes several of his symptoms much worse (ie swelling in his leg).

<div>This seems like an impossible situation for sure. We are hoping a caseworker at the hospital can give him resources to help out (in addition to the handout with lists of shelters). We are looking into how he might get disability coverage, any help on this is welcome. They live in GA so ObamaCare is not a helpful thing (unless you know something I don't, I'd love help).
</div>

<div>I am hoping to raise enough for Charles (and his mom and sister) to find an inexpensive place to move into, maybe public housing, that they can afford moving forward. I am unable to help financially, further than covering their car insurance, since I am currently supporting other family members and am tapped out.

<div>Finally, please try not to be judgy. When you live close to the edge, everything is harder and more expensive. In many places, you can't be tossed out on the street for missing a month of rent, but in some places, the sheriff can show up and toss everything out. It's a messed up world.

<div>Finally part 2, I carry lots of quiet guilt, as someone who has a roof over her head, a well-paying job, the ability to carry debt...while my nephew is living in his car. So I am trying to do what I can...I'd love any help you can offer. Thanks and love to you all.

My nephew needs help

<div>Justin and Erin Ready are nothing short of a power couple. My dad and stepmom are two of the strongest people I will ever know, having weathered the toughest storms while maintaining the love and dedication they have for each other and everyone in their lives. The two own and operate Adventures in Dog Walking, a leading dog walking, training, and pet-sitting company in the Bay Area. Justin and Erin have always been very involved in their community and do everything they can to leave a positive footprint everywhere they step. They now need help from our community, friends, and family in the tragedies that have been striking our family since 2019.

<div>Justin Ready has many titles – father, husband, business owner, herbalist, friend, to name a few – but no one expected cancer patient to become a new way to describe him. My dad’s first cancer diagnosis came right after he turned 40 years old in May of 2019. He went through an intense chemotherapy regimen for three months to fight the cancer. Chemotherapy is extremely rough on the body, and my dad was no exception. Fighting cancer meant fighting through the ills that came with chemo, too, and my dad was the biggest fighter. He finished treatment and was deemed to be in remission by December 2019.
</div>

</div>
<div>Mere months after my dad finished chemotherapy, the COVID-19 pandemic hit, and the whole world was shut down. As you can imagine, this shutdown had immediate and long-term financial effects on my dad and stepmom’s business. While still recovering from the financial strains of medical expenses incurred from the cancer treatment, COVID-19 continued to decimate their business and livelihood. Since the pandemic hit, both Justin and Erin have been in the field working with their dog groups every single day, trying to make it through yet another storm of life.
</div>

</div>
<div>All the while, my stepmom, Erin Ready, was suffering in her own body. She too has many titles – stepmom, wife, business owner, multi-talented musical artist, and friend, to name a few. No one expected a cancer patient to become a new description of Erin, either, let alone after her husband recovered from his cancer. For years she had battled with undiagnosed symptoms and complaints fell on deaf ears. Through her fight for medical care and a diagnosis, Erin found out she had thyroid cancer. She underwent a partial thyroidectomy surgery to have the cancer removed in December of 2022 and is now cancer-free. Her great results also came with another stack of medical bills.
</div>

<div>Erin’s surgery happened just about three years after my dad was declared in remission.  Our family thought this past winter was the end of the medical trauma, but this time of rejoicing was short-lived. My dad is now back in the hospital after having to have emergency exploratory surgery on his abdomen where a carcinoma mass was just removed this past week. His surgery recovery will take up to 4-6 weeks with preventative chemotherapy being suggested to follow. As you can imagine the financial hardships also follow. All we know is that he needs help. Our family needs help.

<div>Our family has been plagued enough by nonstop cancer diagnoses and endless treatment plans. On top of everything else, Justin and Erin do not deserve to be plagued by financial debt from trying to take care of themselves while owning and operating their small business. <div>On Thursday, April 13, 2023, my nephew Ralph P Yarl was on his way to pick up his twin younger brothers from their friend's house a few blocks away from his house. He didn't have his phone. He mistakenly went to the wrong house, one block away from the house where his siblings were. He pulled into the driveway and rang the doorbell. The man in the home opened the door, looked my nephew in the eye, and shot him in the head. My nephew fell to the ground, and the man shot him again. Ralph was then able to get up and run to the neighbor's house, looking for help.

<div>Unfortunately, he had to run to 3 different homes before someone finally agreed to help him after he was told to lie on the ground with his hands up.
</div>

<div>Ralph Pual Yarl is a fantastic kid, and I am not just saying this because he is my nephew. He truly is. At school, he is a member of the Technology Student Association and Science Olympia Team. Jazz and competition band. He is a section leader in the marching band; a scholar and one of the top bass clarinet players in Missouri. He recently earned Missouri All-State Band recognition with an honorable mention. He plays multiple instruments in the metropolitan youth orchestra. He is a 2022 Missouri scholar academy alumni. Ralph can often be found with a musical instrument. He loves them all.

<div>Last summer, Ralph attended Missouri Scholar’s Academy, where he got a full college life experience. His goal is to attend Texas A&amp;M to major in chemical Engineering. When asked how he plans to get into this university, he said, “Well, if they have a scholarship for music or academics, I know I can get it.”

<div>Ralph's teacher and friends describe him as “ a kind soul,” “quiet,” “friendly,” “well-mannered,” “always willing to help,” “super smart,” and a “musical genius.”

<div>Ralph was looking forward to graduating high school and finally getting the opportunity to visit West Africa before starting college.
</div>

<div>Life looks a lot different right now. Even though he is doing well physically, he has a long road ahead mentally and emotionally. The trauma that he has to endure and survive is unimaginable. He is our miracle. We have heard these types of stories many times, and unfortunately, most black boys are not alive to get another chance.

<div>Ralph deserves to have the future that he has dreams about. He deserves to be the light that shows the world that LOVE wins and that humanity is still Good.

<div>I come to you with a heavy heart to share a story about a beloved Global Spartan, my roommate John Hao. John, a twenty-year-old international student from China, was shot in the back and critically injured during the mass shooting on the Michigan State University campus on February 13. As his close friend and roommate for the past three years, I have seen firsthand the impact of this tragedy on his life and that of his family. His parents from China are mentally crushed and traveled to Michigan to see him without being able to speak English.

<div>The bullet severed John's spinal cord (t7-t8) and critically injured his lungs, leaving him paralyzed from the chest down. As he remains stabilized in the ICU with a breathing tube inserted in his lung, his family is facing significant financial burdens. Due to Covid, they are already in a large amount of debt, and John's critical injuries are adding to the pressure on the family, leaving their parents not only to pay the debt in the future but also need to take care of John without having any income, since they are in the US without speaking any English.

<div>John is a beloved member of our Spartan community, a leader in a student organization, and a passionate sports enthusiast. He always go to home games of detroit pistons, and his favorite player is James Harden. He is never able to drive to state parks to look at the stars anymore like he used to, He dreams of travelling the globe and having a career in sports management. However, his ongoing medical and physical needs, will also create a significant financial burden for his family and make it almost impossible to achieve his dreams.

<div>Richard Armstrong passed away on October 6, 2022 at the young age of 55.  As an incredible musician, teacher, and friend, he epitomized a life worth living and a life dedicated to giving. He will be remembered for his gift of the music he played, the knowledge he shared, and the support he provided. His legacy is one to be remembered and celebrated. The Richard Armstrong Memorial Fund is accepting tax deductible donations to fund music programs at the schools and organizations Rich attended and taught.

<div>Many describe Rich as a “musical genius”, “the hardest working multi-instrumentalist they’ve ever known”,  and a “masterful, thoughtful and exciting soloist”. His primary instrument was the trumpet, but he sang lead vocals in several bands and played percussion, guitar, bass, and keyboards professionally.

<div>While Rich collected many awards and accolades from many prominent organizations and musicians, his most proud moments were less pretentious and include: a “best of” award for his Burning Man Crossroads performances, high praise backstage from Bruce Springsteen after a cinematic, ethereal trumpet solo during a live rendition of Nebraska, his work with the Jazz Mafia, which includes the Brass Mafia, Grateful Brass, and Jazz Mafia Symphony, and the only Country song he wrote by putting music to autobiographical lyrics his dad wrote.

<div>He played with and supported major acts from all musical styles including, Boz Scaggs, Tony! Toni! Tone'!, Thomas Dolby, Lydia Pense &amp; Cold Blood, Lyrics Born, Train, and Josh Groban. He has also done stints with Petula Clarke, Spoon, and Jody Watley.

<div>In his memory, his friends and family want to honor his legacy and his gift to the world by funding music programs at Wilcox High School in Santa Clara, CA; the Santa Clara Vanguard; the Waldorf of the Peninsula in Mountain View, CA.  Rich was a Student at Wilcox High School class of '85, a member of Santa Clara Vanguard, and a music teacher at Waldorf of the Peninsula.

</div>This page was originally opened in early November to support Chabot fifth grader, Quada Theriot and his family after he and his mother, Nicole, were in a very serious hit and run car accident. Fortunately, Quada has made a complete physical recovery.  

Initially we raised about $15,000 to support the family while Nicole Theriot navigated a myriad of medical challenges and was unable to work.

Very sadly, Nicole died from complications from this accident on Tuesday, November 29.    We are now seeking additional funds to help with funeral expenses and to support the family through this tragedy.

Hello everyone! To put is simply I am sick, I am very very sick. I have been for a long time. To put it long, about 6 months ago I lost complete control of my health. I was diagnosed with Lyme disease after fighting for over a year to get an accurate diagnosis. I then found out my stomach is filled with bile, my gallbladder is not functioning, my endometriosis is progressing, and I am beginning to see specialist for a possible coinfection of MCAS AND P.O.T.S. I have lost 20 pounds. I am getting worse. In my most recent doctors appointment with what I hoped would be my new internal medicine specialist I was told "You have too many symptoms. I don't even know where to begin." For 6 months I have been going from doctor to doctor and have received no treatment. I am already out over 1,000 dollars and I barely have any answers or doctors I trust. I have not been able to work because of Covid and just the severity of my illness. A lot of days I cannot move because the pain is too unbearable. Sometimes I lose consciousness because of the pain. I am 24 and wear compression socks and get out of breath walking <strong>It is terrifying being chronically ill, queer, black, and a woman right now. It is terrifying having to see doctors that don't view me as human and trusting them with my life.</strong>to the kitchen in my small duplex. Along this journey I have experienced so much blatant and violent racism and disregard for my health from doctors and hospitals. I am constantly being told despite the vast amount of symptoms, diagnosis, and actual failing organs and pain that I just have anxiety or PTSD.  <br />Because I am not able to work or move most days I have lost my income. I am quickly drowning in medical bills and cannot afford to travel or see specialists for my disease(there are no Lyme disease specialists in my entire state and the medical field in Oklahoma is terrifying in general). I currently see 6 specialist. I am about to have surgery, and I have three different doctors appointments for this week alone. I take over 15 pills a day depending on what time of the month it is. Medications and supplements are expensive. I now live alone(as of this month) and now pay all of my bills and rent alone when before they were divided. I was receiving unemployment but as of this month that is no longer. Please share if you cannot donate. Thank you to everyone for your continued support of me, my art, and my activism.

Help the Porters rebuild their home

Can you please help my brother and I prove we are U.S. Citizens?  <br /><br />When I was 18 months Old, my 8 year old brother, Onis, and I flew to the US alone from the Dominican Republic. My grandmother who was a U.S. Citizen at the time petitioned for us. We have been here legally as permanent residents ever since. My Green Card expired a few years ago and I couldn’t travel because I feared deportation. Also, I really wanted to vote in the last election, but couldn’t. Recently we learned that because our father became a U.S. Citizen when we were minors we are eligible for Citizenship. It’s complicated because we need to prove “legitimization”. We are hiring a lawyer to help us.<br /><br /><br />I am a recent high school graduate. I am currently volunteering as a Youth Leader for the Mosaic Project (a non-profit organization that empowers youth to build more peaceful communities). <br /><br /><br />The lawyer we are hiring is charging a flat fee to file a brief and complete our N600 forms. Her fee is $4,000. We also have to pay $1,170 to INS for each of the N600 forms. Total cost is 6,340. We are trying to raise $5,340 to offset the cost for us.
