I've been thinking hard for the past few weeks about something I could do to honor my mom's memory. I've been counting my blessings ever since she passed, but I realized the other night during the crazy storm we had how grateful I am to have a roof over my head. How grateful I am to be warm. How grateful I am for food in my stomach. A hot shower. A pillow. Socks.<br /><br />As some of you know, the last few years of her life were rough for my mom. She basically lost everything and ended up homeless. She would often talk about the nice people who would come by and bring her different essentials: toilet paper, socks, food, etc. Basic necessities that you and I take for granted. She was always incredibly grateful for anything anyone had to offer her.<br /><br />The night the storm was going on, I realized I had a weird sense of relief. I no longer had to worry about whether my mom was warm and dry. If she had food in her belly. If she had taken a shower. It was a comforting thought for a brief moment, until I thought about all of the people who aren't so lucky. The ones who are still out there with nowhere to go, doing what they can to survive. People exactly like my mom.<br /><br />After a lot of thought, I've decided the best way to honor my mom's memory is to give back to those less fortunate. My goal is to raise enough money to buy sleeping bags and items to make backpacks for the homeless. Things like socks, toothbrushes, hand sanitizer, wipes, BandAids, and food will all be included. I want to pass these "blessing bags" out to those in need around the Sacramento area. <br /><br />My mom was an incredible woman who lost her way the last decade of her life. Her story goes to show that those you love are just a paycheck or a bad decision away from ending up on the streets. Those "filthy bums" you see on the corner are someone's mother or father. Someone's daughter or son. Someone's brother or sister. They all deserve a little bit of kindness and empathy. And they all deserve the basic essentials you and I take for granted every day. I've never been so excited to make an idea a reality, and I hope that all of you are eager to get behind this as well. ❤️
