<div>On January 7th, 2026, Ryan was diagnosed with an extremely rare and aggressive form of cancer: Stage 4 metastatic non-small cell lung cancer with an incurable BRAF V600E mutation. This fast-spreading cancer was discovered after what seemed like nothing more than a persistent cough. Since his diagnosis, the cancer has been found to have spread to his brain, liver, and stomach.

<div>Ryan and his family are dedicated members of the Torrance Police Department. Ryan has been with TPD since 2015, beginning his career as a Records Technician and later promoting to Administrative Assistant in the Financial Planning &amp; Strategy Division. Ryan’s wife, Amy Simpkins, has served as a TPD Services Officer since 2012, working as a jailor, a parking enforcement officer in the Traffic Division, and now as the Department’s court liaison. Ryan’s sister-in-law, Natalie Blumfield, has also been with TPD since 2010 and currently works as an Administrative Analyst in Services. His co-workers at TPD describe Ryan as a caring, funny, and genuine person.

<div>Together, Ryan and Amy are raising their 7-year-old son, Liam. Liam knows his Dad is sick but currently does not know the extent of his Dad’s diagnosis.

One of Ryan’s greatest joys is simply playing video games with Liam and making memories together.

<div>On October 17th, an El Segundo resident (whom we are referring to as “AJ”) was detained by ICE as he sat in his truck in the parking lot of a Home Depot in Inglewood. AJ is married to Carmen, an American citizen who has lived in El Segundo for over 20 years and whom many in the community know from her 35 years at the Post Office and from her years working at the former Rite Aid in town.

<div>AJ had a Green Card application in process at the time he was detained. He is currently being held in Calexico, 220 miles away. AJ is diabetic and requires a special diet and prescribed medication, which he has not been given. There are grave concerns for his health.

<div>The ICE raids have now affected a beloved resident of El Segundo, Carmen, and her husband, AJ:
</div>
<div><br />
</div>
<div>Carmen immigrated from Peru many decades ago and is a U.S. citizen. She has worked hard over the years; currently, she works 12-hour shifts six days a week for the U.S Postal Service, a job she’s held for 35 years. She moved to El Segundo when her son was a small child so that he could receive a good education. She scrimped and saved and sacrificed and was able to purchase a condo here in town. Her son attended El Segundo schools, where he played on the football team, and went on to serve in the Marines for ten years. Now he is a federal contractor in Nevada. Many of us know Carmen because she worked at Rite-Aid for many years, as well as at the Post Office.

<div>Carmen’s husband AJ has lived in the US for over twenty years. Carmen met AJ when she was out dancing with friends: “When my friends went out to dance, we would call him to dance with us.” AJ became Carmen’s dance partner. “And little by little… I didn’t realize I was falling in love with him.”
</div>

</div>
<div>The couple married in 2017. They immediately applied for AJ to get a Green Card, but the attorney they hired filled in the wrong birth date on the forms. The process became stalled in the nightmarish bureaucratic immigration maze.
</div>
<div><br />
</div>
<div>In 2023, with the help of a new lawyer, they were able to correct the birthdate on the application, which seemed to resolve the issue. They expected the application to move forward. A backlog of 7.6 million Green Card applications existed in 2023, and the processing of Green Card applications remained stalled.
</div>
<div><br />
</div>
<div>When Trump was elected, his administration asserted that only undocumented immigrants who were violent criminals would be deported. Carmen’s husband had NO criminal record, a Green Card application in process, AND AJ is married to Carmen, an American citizen.
</div>
<div><br />
</div>
<div>On October 17th, 2025, at 9:00 AM, as AJ sat in his truck in the parking lot of the Home Depot in Inglewood, he was surrounded by ICE agents, who forced him from his truck and detained him. They confiscated his phone and would not allow him to call an attorney or his wife. He was taken to the Downtown Los Angeles Metropolitan Detention Center. Fourteen other day laborers were taken along with AJ.
</div>

<div>Carmen learned what happened when the wife of one of the other workers got a message to her. She left work and called her lawyer and the Mexican consulate (neither of whom returned her calls for several days). She was able to retrieve AJ’s truck from the Home Depot parking lot, then rushed to the Metropolitan Detention Center.
</div>
<div><br />
</div>
<div>Her husband AJ is diabetic and requires medication and a special diet to keep his blood sugar under control. At the Metropolitan Detention Center, an officer confirmed her husband was in custody there, but would not allow her to deliver the medication or food.
</div>
<div><br />
</div>
<div>When Carmen tried to put money in her husband’s commissary fund, she could not. He was not officially “in the system” for several days. He was given no soap, no water to wash, little food, and was not able to call anyone. AJ was only able to send messages to Carmen through the family of one of the other detainees, who called her.
</div>
<div><br />
</div>
<div>Over the next few days, AJ was abruptly moved to Santa Ana, then back to Downtown LA, and then to a detention center in Calexico, a 220-mile and four-hour drive from El Segundo. The lawyer who had been representing AJ told Carmen he could not continue to represent AJ after that move.
</div>

<div>A few weeks after AJ was detained, Carmen received an email with a notice for AJ to appear at an immigration hearing regarding his Green Card application. Since he was already detained, of course, he could not appear. Because he did not appear, his application was denied, leaving him vulnerable to deportation.
</div>

</div>
<div>AJ had a hearing on November 17th, and Carmen made the trip to Calexico to be in the hearing and see him, but after arriving, she was told by the court clerk that the hearing was virtual. She sat inside the tiny courtroom of the Imperial Immigration Court with the court clerk and watched the proceedings on a large screen. The judge and an interpreter were virtual from another location. AJ was virtual from the Imperial Detention Center. AJ’s lawyer was virtual as well.
</div>

<div>During the hearing, AJ’s lawyer asked for a continuance to prepare the case. The court translator mistranslated some crucial information about the date of the next hearing to AJ (who does not speak English). No one corrected it. Carmen herself raised her hand and asked the court clerk if she could speak.
</div>
<div><br />
</div>
<div>The judge listened to her explain that the translator had given AJ incorrect information. The judge asked the translator to correct this for AJ. This incident is an example of how crucial it is for Carmen and advocates of AJ to be present and on top of all proceedings.
</div>
<div><br />
</div>
<div>Carmen was not allowed to visit AJ at the detention center after the hearing because there are no family visit days on Mondays or Tuesdays.
</div>
<div><br />
</div>
<div>Carmen retained a new lawyer based in San Diego, who said they would appeal the denial. On November 23rd, she drove four hours to Calexico to see AJ. She was initially refused because AJ was “not in the system” (in spite of being told on the phone by detention center staff that she would be able to visit that day). Her insistence prevailed, and she was able to see him. He had finally been given clean clothes, and conditions had improved slightly, but AJ was not being given the medication his doctor had prescribed for his diabetes, in spite of lawyers filing letters from AJ’s doctors with information about his required medication and diet.

<div>Earlier, in September, a man in the same facility where AJ is being held died from an untreated health condition. As of November, 25 detainees have died in ICE detention centers this year.
</div>

</div>
<div>AJ struggles to keep his spirits up in detention. There has been pressure put on him by authorities to sign the papers that would force his deportation to Mexico. Thirteen of the men who were detained along with him have been deported. Another man has disappeared and can’t be located by his family. Carmen has requested local clergy to visit AJ in detention, but the Imperial Detention Center is not allowing clergy or other advocacy groups to visit detainees.

88 & Still Working:Let’s Support Veteran Ed Bambas

Israel and his wife have spent years building their small contracting business from the ground up. After working his way through the trades, Israel started his own company eight years ago, and together with his wife, they’ve become a trusted team in their community. Yesterday, while we were looking at flooring, their locked truck was broken into in broad daylight. Thieves stole a collection of essential tools, including a four-speed impact driver, a set of drills, a Makita battery-powered circular saw, and a combo kit drill/driver. These are the tools they rely on every day to complete projects and support their livelihood.

 The loss is a devastating blow. Israel and his wife will have to borrow tools just to keep working, which will slow them down and make it much harder to finish jobs on time. Despite this setback, they remain determined to keep moving forward. Seeing them so shaken as they spoke with the police was heartbreaking. They are resilient people who have always helped others, and now they need a little help themselves. Funds raised will go directly toward replacing the stolen tools so they can get back to work and continue serving their clients without further disruption.

Luckily, they are safe but are displaced and in need of support as they begin to put their lives back together, find a new place to live, and replace everything that was destroyed.

Support for The Bresnitz Family's Fire Recovery

<div>On August 4th 2024, 27-year-old Jorge Santos was riding his road bike from his home in Baldwin Hills to the city of El Segundo to meet some friends at a local brewery on a beautiful summer Sunday. Only a few blocks away from his destination, Jorge was hit by a suspect running from the San Bernardino Sheriff's Department. This suspect was driving at a very high rate of speed, ran the stop sign, hit Jorge, and kept going, leaving him unconscious and bleeding in the street after being thrown into the air off of his bike. Several citizens raced to Jorge’s aid and stayed with him until fire and paramedics quickly arrived and took him away. Due to the help and care given by the medics and firefighters of the El Segundo Fire Department, combined with an absolute miracle, Jorge survived the hit and run. He was in a coma from the day of the accident until August 7th (4 days) and now after multiple surgeries continues to reside in the hospital with a broken left femur, broken left hand and fingers, two broken clavicles, two collapsed lungs, every rib fractured/broken/bruised, hip issues, and road rash. He still is unable to get out of bed or walk.

<div>A little more about Jorge. Jorge lives alone with his mother and helps provide for them. He loves being outdoors and going on adventures like rock climbing, hiking, and backpacking. However, Jorge’s true love is cycling. He is an avid bike rider and an active member in the cycling community of Los Angeles. Here’s what a friend and fellow cyclist wrote about Jorge:

<div>“If you came to one of our group bicycle rides in recent months, you probably enjoyed the company of the smiling, positive ray of joy that is Jorge. He brightens up every mile on the road and every conversation at a stop. <div>We were trying to keep this quiet, but many of you are finding out and both of our phones have been flooded with kind messages but we don’t have the energy to respond.

<div>Weds evening, after getting a tattoo, Fitzjoy was rushed to the ER from extreme pain around his on his right side. They found a punctured lung and drained 2 L of blank ink on the first night. He had used numbing cream which can dilate the skin and cause these crazy types of accidents that normally don’t happen from a tattoo.
</div>

<div>He is still in the ICU fighting to breathe and an infection developed in his lungs and last night they drained a 10 L of puss and fluid. He has been in an extreme amount of pain and on pain medication around the clock which is causing him to hallucinate. His heart rate had elevated due to him having a hard time breathing, and since last night it’s more stable. Today is the first day we feel like we are finally headed in the right direction.

<div>He is still working hard to take his next breath. We don't know how long this road will be and how long he will be in the ICU. Today was the first day he was able to move a bit but he still can’t fully sit up.

Everyone who knew and loved Alex knows how caring he was, that he was a real-life super dad, and that his number one priority was always his family.

<div>After 37 years of dedicated service in the classroom, statewide education activism, and advocacy, Daphne Moote has announced her retirement from the El Segundo School District effective at the end of the 2024 school year. A graduate of the University of Southern California School of Education, (Where her father, the late A. Lloyd Moote was Professor Emeritus of European History) and the CSU Dominguez M.Ed. program, Daphne is a tireless and selfless advocate for students, teachers, administrators, and district employees. Moote helped generations of students begin their educational journey as a National Board-Certified Early Learner Generalist and Trainer of teachers seeking National Board Certification. She served her entire classroom career as a kinder teacher, while influencing the lives of students at every grade level.

<div>From the very beginning, her passionate activism and advocacy work was evident. Beginning at the local level as a Building Representative for the El Segundo Teachers Association, Daphne rose rapidly through the various levels of ESTA; eventually serving as the President of the El Segundo Teachers Association for an unprecedented 16 years! All the while building a solid relationship with the California Teachers Association and spearheading efforts to negotiate significant benefits for deserving El Segundo District employees. Of vital importance was working to preserve class sizes and programs that support student learning. Her efforts did not go unrecognized.
</div>
<div>Moote is a three-time recipient of the Bay Valley Service Center Council WHO Award (We Honor Our Own), given for her years of dedicated service to the El Segundo Teachers Association, The Bay Valley Service Center Council, and the California Teachers Association. Moote also served as a trainer of TLC staff, and numerous committees, such as PTA Council. Her behind the scene efforts helped make the El Segundo School District generally, and Center Street, a recognized institution of academic excellence. Her efforts do not end there.
</div>
<div>Along with her husband, Daphne co-founded a popular summer education nonprofit, the Daphne A. Moote Learning Academy (DAMLA), which began in 1990. The curriculum focuses on learning through the creative arts, and has been a pioneer in the development of similar summer projects that have emerged. Her experience in curriculum development and his experience as a playwright and director, have joined to produce a fun learning experience, supporting their research that learning is enhanced by the creative arts. Her many years as an ETM (Education Through Music) devotee adds a special quality to the summer workshop experience.
</div>
<div>But it is in the classroom, helping to develop new learners, where Moote finds her greatest joy. To this day she hears from students who go back many years, and she marvels at the many occasions when now adult former kindergarten students enroll their own kids in her Center Street kinder class. Her social media accounts abound with photos, notes, and remembrances from both current and past students and their families. The love pouring out from folks who have learned of her impending retirement is frequent and fulfilling. As a recent group of parents who were former students commented when they heard the news of her retirement, “There is only one Ms. Moote. She will be missed. Thank you!”

<div>Ken Hudson Campbell is an accomplished film, TV, and voice-over actor &amp; improvisational comedian who has been a card-carrying union member for upwards of 35 years. On October 27th, 2023, Ken was diagnosed with cancer, a tumor had elusively grown on the bottom of his mouth and it began encroaching on his teeth. On December 7th, he is scheduled for a 10-hour surgery, during which a large part of his jawbone will be removed, along with his lymph nodes, and part of his leg bone. Surgeons plan to reconstruct a new jaw for Ken from this leg bone, install it, and treat him with radiation. He will have a 6-month recovery period &amp; Chemo may be needed afterwards as well.

<div>In January of 2022, following the COVID-19 pandemic, Ken lost the SAG-AFTRA health insurance that he had used for his whole career. Since then he has switched to Kaiser, &amp; has great faith in his new team. Regardless,  he's looking at a week in the hospital, dealing with a feeding tube, skin grafts, and a Tracheotomy, <span>and we are looking at further recovery possibilities like nursing homes . Even though physical therapy and speech therapy are covered, we  are anticipating huge out-of-pocket costs for caregivers/skilled nursing, insurance premiums, medical equipment, transportation, dental implants, dentures  and who knows what else. Our entire immediate family, Kathleen, Richard, and Michaela, are planning on taking care of him as much as we can during this long journey.</span>

<div>Abigail was born October 12, 2020 in Bangkok to a very loving Mommy and Daddy Naomi and Danny Bull. Shortly after birth, she was diagnosed with Phelan McDermid Syndrome (<a href="https://pmsf.org/)," target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener"><a href="https://pmsf.org/" target="_blank" class="" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer">https://pmsf.org/</a>),</a> a rare genetic condition that has predisposed her to a series of neurological and physical challenges. Naomi has become a full-time caregiver, driving Abigail to 30+ hours of therapy a week, school, doctor's apt, etc. Abigail's health insurance continues to increase as she needs continuous care from the best doctors.

<div>Abigail is making a lot of progress through therapy, and most notably through her intensive programs where she receives one on one therapy for several hours a day. Her third intensive will start in August, and she is expected to make strides!

<div>My name is RowVaughn Wells. I am the mother of Tyre Nichols. My son, Tyre Nichols, was pulled over for suspected “reckless driving” on January 7, 2023. There is no evidence to substantiate this claim. Further, police claim that my son left the scene on foot. It turns out that he was just trying to get to my house for safety -- which was only a few blocks away from where the incident happened. My baby was just trying to make it home to be safe in my arms. Tyre was unarmed, nonthreatening, and respectful to police during the entire encounter!

<div>During my son's interaction with the police, they beat him beyond recognition until he became unconscious. He was then taken to a hospital and immediately placed on life support. He died 3 days later, but I believe that my son died on January 7th, the moment those 5 Black Memphis Police Officers pulled Tyre over and beat him to death for no good reason. His cousin who saw him in the hospital, swollen and disfigured, like “he was a scary monster.”

<div>All 5 Officers have been fired, and charges ranging from Murder 2 to Kidnapping, have been filed against them. The video of Tyre's murder is set to be released any day now. I would like to warn everyone that the contents of the video are "horrific." However, I am asking people to protest in peace after its release. I don’t want us burning up our cities, and tearing up the streets because that’s not what my son stood for.

Tyre Nichols Memorial Fund

On January 2nd, our friend Lauren was part of a horrific attack in lower Manhattan that you may have heard about from the local New York City news.  I won't get into the particulars, if you would like to know more about the event please read the article below, instead I would prefer to focus on how we can help Lauren recover. <br /><br />Lauren has undergone significant head trauma which has taken a physical and emotional toll. At the time of writing this she is in the ICU and could remain there for the rest of the week. The recovery from this incident will involve aftercare and put Lauren in a situation where she will be unable to work for a little while. <br /><br />The first time I met Lauren was after a show that she performed in. Right away I knew she was a supreme talent. What I did not know was the depth of her kindness and empathy for others. She cares about people deeply and now she needs our help. Hi...my name is Amy Grant and I am the Mother to two sons who have been taken care of by Carmen Perez at Andi's House Daycare.  Late this Summer, Carmen found out that she was very ill and has since had to leave her position at Andi's.  I don't know Carmen very well on a personal level, but I do know that my boys both love her and that her love was boundless for all of the children and families that she took care of.  My heart breaks for her as I see her battle cancer.  She can't eat, she can barely speak, and I can sense she's full of fear.  I would like to reach out to all of the people who know her, and ask for some help to put her mind at ease about the financial part of this journey...she needs every ounce of energy for the physical part.  <br /><br />Please show Carmen how much she means to us and how much she is loved.

Here is her story:<br /><br />My husband, Joe Nowakowski, died in June of 2014 three months after we discovered that he had metastasized kidney cancer. Though he had been feeling poorly for months,  we never thought that his aching back was caused by aggressive tumors eroding his spine, or that his absentmindedness was from lesions that had spread to his brain.  Before his illness, he had been an avid tennis player, an active ultramarathoner, a devoted dad, and a wonderful husband.<br /><br />After Joe died, I found out that his business had been suffering for many months and he had, in the desperation and muddled thinking caused by his undiagnosed brain tumors, borrowed heavily to keep our lives going. Finally and the most difficult of all, without telling anyone, he cancelled his life insurance policy to save money. All of this was so unlike Joe – he had become  a man desperate to save his business and family whose brain and decision making were afflicted by an unknown disease.  So after his death, we were faced with a mountain of debt and bills, along with the sorrow that he had been living with a secret anguish as he scrambled to take care of his family.<br /><br />Because we had no equity in our house, we lost our beautiful home and had to find families for our beloved dogs, the finicky poodle Oliver and lumbering Lab puppy Hugo.  Before we moved, we donated all of our possessions – furniture, clothing, kitchen supplies, camping, gardening, and sport equipment, tables, paintings, televisions, computers.  As we gave everything away, we knew the things were inconsequential.   My daughters and I still had our health and each other, and we were bolstered time again by the support of family, the kindness of friends, and the guidance of church.<br /><br />This week, however, we received another blow. Because of California law that took effect in January, I am being taxed on the over $475,000 that I lost in our house.  I have learned that this is called “phantom income” – since I never saw it!  When I found out that my tax bill will be nearly $50,000, I almost passed out.  I am a widow, a high school English teacher with a daughter going to college next year, and I have very little in savings due to my attempts to settle all of my husband’s debts honorably.<br /><br />I have worked since I was fifteen (starting out in a Stuckey’s in Knoxville, Tennessee!) and I have always been self-supporting, but I can’t handle this final catastrophe on my own. I thank anyone who could contribute, even in small way, to help me and my daughters!
