<div>Leonard was born with physical difficulties that affected his ability to walk. During his grade school and high school years, he had two serious falls caused by instability, and since then he has relied on crutches to walk. Despite these challenges, Leonard has always been strong, hopeful, and determined to live independently while supporting his mother, who looks after him.

<div>In 2021, Leonard began experiencing episodes where he could not breathe properly, along with the appearance of a growing mass beside his left nose. At the same time, he suffered panic attacks, severe anxiety, tremors, and occasional loss of consciousness, which made leaving the house difficult. He became more isolated and experienced social withdrawal due to his condition. But despite these struggles, he continued working as an online teacher to support his mom and himself. Over time, his condition worsened, his face became visibly swollen and asymmetrical, breathing became harder, and pressure behind his left eye increased.

<div>Medical Diagnosis

<div>Just this year, after extensive consultations and CT imaging, Leonard has been diagnosed with craniofacial fibrous dysplasia (CFD), a rare bone disease or a progressive bone disorder in which normal bone is replaced by fibrous tissue, most commonly affecting the skull and facial bones. This abnormal growth is causing progressive facial swelling and asymmetry, pressure behind the eye, difficulty breathing, compression of surrounding nerves, a serious risk of permanent vision loss due to optic nerve compression.

<div>It is progressive and destructive if left untreated. Doctors have made it clear that Leonard needs a life-changing surgical operation to remove or reshape the affected bone and prevent further damage of his face and skull. Without surgery, his condition will continue to worsen

<div>His Doctor have confirmed that Leonard’s case requires a complex, multi-phase surgery that can only be performed in Manila at St. Luke’s Medical Center. The procedure will involve a specialized team, including a craniofacial and maxillofacial surgeon, a neurosurgeon, and a neuro-ophthalmologist, followed by a long recovery that includes post-operative care, physical therapy, and regular monitoring.
