<div>My name is Luca, and In 2024, I travelled to Tanzania as part of my Transition Year trip, and it was the single best experience of my life. I completely fell in love with the country, the people, and the incredible kindness I experienced while I was there.

<div>At the end of the two weeks, Lenore Collins, the woman who brought us to Tanzania, came up with the idea for the Teretta Foundation, a safe house in the Moshi region near Kilimanjaro that supports vulnerable children and gives them a safe place to eat, learn and get the help they need.

<div>In 2025, I went back to Tanzania to see the amazing work the foundation was doing. While I was there, I climbed Mount Kilimanjaro in support of the charity, but unfortunately broke my arm while coming back down. Even though that happened, it made me even more determined to support the foundation and the children who rely on it.

<div>So now, I’m setting myself a challenge to raise €3,000 in 30 days for the Teretta Foundation. This money will help make sure the children can continue getting the support, care, and opportunities they deserve. The foundation is also currently short a few hundred euro for this month, so any donation, no matter how small, would mean so much.

Teretta Foundation

<div>This is our sister Fiona. At the time of her 12-week pregnancy scan, Fiona had been experiencing double vision and put this down to an unusual pregnancy symptom. However, what followed was a series of medical investigations including multiple hospital stays, much medical imaging and a very complicated biopsy procedure. Then, at 20 weeks pregnant with her rainbow baby, while Fiona and her husband Paul should have been experiencing the joy and excitement of her long-awaited pregnancy, Fiona was faced with a devastating diagnosis: Chondrosarcoma in her skull base, a very rare form of bone cancer.
</div>

<div>Fiona’s tumour is in a very difficult location to access and she has already been told that removal of the entire tumour will not be possible.
</div>
<div><br />
</div>
<div>Fiona’s neurosurgery team in Beaumont Hospital have advised her that she should carry her baby to term before they attempt to remove her tumour. She will need open skull surgery which is highly complex and comes with a lengthy recovery. This surgery will take place 3 weeks after Fiona gives birth to her baby. After surgery Fiona will require specialist radiation treatment, Proton therapy, which is not available here in Ireland but has proven results with this type of tumour. Fiona faces the hard reality of leaving Ireland 10-12 weeks after giving birth to her baby to start this treatment. She will most likely travel to Germany and have to spend 10 weeks receiving intensive treatment, all with her new born baby.

<div>While the cost of Proton therapy is covered by the government, Fiona and Paul will have to cover the cost of travel, accommodation and other costs associated with the treatment. Having spoken to numerous charities and researching accommodation suitable for her needs we are estimating this to cost in excess of €20,000. We are therefore raising funds to assist Fiona and Paul with these costs. Any contribution, no matter how small, would make a huge difference in easing the burden during this incredibly difficult time.

<div>Funds raised, above what is needed, will be happily donated in Fiona’s name to The Gavin Glynn Foundation. This amazing Irish charity assists the families of children with cancer, with all the logisitics and financial aspects of travelling overseas for specialist cancer treatment, such as proton therapy.

<div>We have hope. Please keep Fiona, her husband Paul, and their baby in your thoughts and prayers as they face this challenging journey.

<div>Peter (BadCompany/FalveyXL) is no stranger to a worthy cause and a challenge.

<div>He has taken on many an adventure (<strong>2020</strong>: "<em>little pink</em>" gave us hope when needed, <strong>2021</strong>: "<em>Buzz from Mizen to Malin</em>" traveled on a 50cc scooter &amp; <strong>2022</strong>: he traveled the 32 counties (several times) and beyond..)

<p>This fundraiser has been created to help Alan Leigh cover some of his expenses <br />and the medical bills he has recently incurred.   <br /><br />The Covid-19  situation has added to the travel costs and the medical and prescription bills are coming in thick and fast, in normal circumstances this would be a <br />stressful situation for anyone but during the current pandemic the situation has <br />created a need for additional protective measures which are very costly. <br /><br />We can help Alan and his loving family get through this extremely difficult period by helping to gather as much funding as possible. <br /><br />The funds will primarily cover hospital bills and go towards the costs of further<br />treatment, medication expenses and anything else that Alan's parents Joe and Marie Leigh, feel will help either them or him. <br /><br />Joe Leigh, Alan's father will be the beneficiary of the fund on behalf of the Leigh family. Joe will be the sole person to withdraw the funding <br />

<div>The pandemic pushed out my plans to travel but yet it also subsequently gave me more time to fundraise at home and six Irish charities were lucky recipients of over €92,000 of huge fundraising efforts in 2021.

<div>I went out to Tanzania as a tourist shortly after and found a sister, soul family and home and things havent been the same since.

<div>Take 540 children on well deserved days out swimming and on a bus for the first time, has covered the cost of food for a full school year for two consecutive years, has sent over 5 pallets of donated items thanks to the kindness of people on my social media account, has helped contribute towards student doctors college fees in the community, given 53 children a graduation party, bought fruit for 340 children, helped support other organizations in the area including the purchase of over thirty wheelchairs for children with disabilities in the locality (through our friend Johnson Dickson), many of whom are locked inside, two of whom were kept in the darkness for 19 and 24 years respectively.

<div>We got word just in February last that one eight year old child with additional needs was going to be killed as she was a burden to her family but thanks to our collective community efforts with Johnson, is now a recipient of a wheelchair and has access to fresh air, sunlight and safety.

<div>The lottery of life has somehow dictated for many children born into a country by chance that their birthplace, nationality and right to live in safety and dignity is down to luck.

<div>The stories of many of the children in the area are both horrific and heartbreaking. Each visit uncovers more truths and a rawness that you are never quite prepared for but yet are equally priviliged to be trusted enough for them to impart a bit more of their story to you as the bond begins to strengthen.

<div>As mothers ourselves, Teddy and I instinctively want to help those who are in genuine need of a home and an education. To alter the trajectory of not only their lives but also of their community that they can have the tools to go back and support given the structure and scaffolding that allows them to. Our goal is to do it without the corrupt, unjust politics that seem to play a huge part in how funds are used which more often than not, is not with the community or children in mind or even made a priority or consideration.

<div>This has now led us to join forces to set up <strong>Teretta Foundation</strong> a nod to our heritage, combining our love for our Grandmothers Teresa (Teddy) and Etta, where we both got our sense of community and heart to give back from.

<div>Her Mother was a housemaid at a house in Mailisita village and in the same house was a houseboy. They began a relationship and Catherine was born. Soon after they abandoned her there as the family didnt like her. The church moved her to two more houses where she was abused and horrifically mistreated.

<div>I have been following Lenore <a href="https://www.instagram.com/outinthestickswithsix/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">outinthestickswithsix</a> since March 2019, as an early years educator I wanted to educate myself on the world of Autism and thought where better to learn than from real life experiences and perspectives.

<div>I followed Len’s journey to Tanzania for the first time and was in awe of what she was doing for those over there and how much a little went a long way for them. When Len put out the call for people to join her in her second climb of Kilimanjaro to fundraise for a primary school in the area, I just knew I had to apply, it was the experience I needed despite everyone around me thinking I was crazy for it!

<div>It’s very hard to find the words to describe my first or any of my visits to Tanzania other than it kept a piece of my heart (quite a big one) and became my second home.

<div>My next visit was in May of ‘23. This was a different trip as we spent so much more time with the children, building relationships and establishing trust. Following this trip, it confirmed what I already knew, that these children could not be left behind.
</div>

<div>Each trip has brought something different. Always offering perspective. One thing I know for sure is that these children are facing adverse situations, seeing and experiencing things that no child should ever experience. As Len has often pointed out, the lives that these children live is purely down to where in the world they were born. I am beyond proud of the work Len has done over there with <em>Teddy, the school, the guides and porters, Dr Joel, MAISHA outreach organization &amp; Johnson.</em>

<div>On learning what some of these beautiful children had been exposed to and what had been forced upon them, without hesitation I am behind Len &amp; Teddy and the <strong>Teretta Foundation</strong> in creating a safe place for these children, a second chance, a home and all of the love they deserve.

<div>Over the coming months I will be doing whatever I can, pushing myself outside of my comfort zone in the hopes of raising funds to help get this safe home established as soon as possible. I really hope that people can get behind this as it takes a community to get this done.
