<div>Unser zwölfjähriger Sohn lebt seit Kurzem mit Typ-1-Diabetes. Diese Diagnose hat unser Familienleben von einem Tag auf den anderen grundlegend verändert. Typ-1-Diabetes ist eine Autoimmunerkrankung und hat nichts mit Ernährung oder Lebensstil zu tun – der Körper produziert kein Insulin mehr. Das bedeutet permanente Kontrolle, Tag und Nacht. Besonders gefährlich sind Unterzuckerungen, vor allem nachts oder in Situationen, in denen unser Sohn Warnzeichen nicht rechtzeitig bemerkt.

<div>Trotz moderner Technik wie Glukosesensoren kommt es immer wieder zu kritischen Momenten: Sensoren können ausfallen, verzögert messen oder Warnungen werden im Schlaf überhört. Ein ausgebildeter Diabetes-Warnhund kann hier den entscheidenden Unterschied machen. Er erkennt Veränderungen im Körpergeruch, die auf Unter- oder Überzuckerung hinweisen – oft früher als technische Geräte. Der Hund warnt aktiv, weckt nachts und kann lebensgefährliche Situationen verhindern.

<div>Für unseren Sohn bedeutet ein Warnhund nicht nur medizinische Sicherheit, sondern auch mehr Normalität, Selbstvertrauen und Unabhängigkeit – zur Schule gehen, bei Freunden übernachten, einfach Kind sein, ohne ständige Angst. Leider übernehmen Krankenkassen in Deutschland die Kosten für Anschaffung und Ausbildung eines Diabetes-Warnhundes in der Regel nicht. Diese liegen je nach Ausbildungsstätte bei mehreren zehntausend Euro – eine Summe, die wir allein nicht aufbringen können.

<div>Our twelve-year-old son was recently diagnosed with Type 1 diabetes. From one day to the next, this diagnosis completely changed our family’s life. Type 1 diabetes is an autoimmune disease and is not related to diet or lifestyle – the body no longer produces insulin. This means constant monitoring, day and night. Low blood sugar levels are especially dangerous, particularly at night or when our son may not notice warning signs in time.

<div>Even with modern technology like glucose sensors, critical situations still occur: sensors can fail, show delayed readings, or alarms may be missed during sleep. A specially trained diabetes alert dog can make a crucial difference. These dogs detect changes in body scent that signal low or high blood sugar – often earlier than any technical device. The dog actively alerts, wakes at night, and helps prevent life-threatening situations.

<div>For our son, a diabetes alert dog means not only medical safety, but also more normality, confidence, and independence – going to school, staying overnight with friends, and simply being a child without constant fear. Unfortunately, in Germany the costs for acquiring and training a diabetes alert dog are usually not covered by health insurance. Depending on the program, these costs can reach several tens of thousands of euros – a sum we cannot manage alone.
