<div>The night of August 6th Maya peacefully transitioned at home in the Castro into their divine dancing self, adorned with all their fabulous drag and paintbrushes in hand. I was holding Maya’s hand for the final moments and letting them know how much they are loved and the value of the beautiful work they have done in this world and all the seeds they have planted.

<div>Maya left this world exactly as they lived it, wrapped in art, queer power, and divine beauty.
</div>

</div>
<div>As Maya always said, “no matter what I make with my hands, my being will always be my greatest art.” Maya made this world a kinder, deeper, and more meaningful place just by being their full self. Words cannot fully express the depth of love and devotion we shared and also the profound heartbreak of losing such an incredible spirit and soulmate. And an amazing parent, lovingly called “Mod.”

<div>This has been, without a doubt, the hardest chapter of our lives. And has shown us just how deep our love goes…for each other, our family, and the larger community work we do together.

<div>Following a medical crisis from a seizure in February and the completion of a major phase of cancer treatment in March, Maya has been home these last few months in an active, focused period of healing. Their legendary and fierce "Powerhouse" spirit is of course shining through. If you know Maya, you know exactly what I’m talking about. As one nurse said, “Maya is crushing it.”

<div>But the road hasn't been a straight line. Navigating insurance delays for critical physical therapy unfortunately contributed to an accidental fall and fracture at the end of April.

Support Maya Gonzalez's Health and Healing Journey

 On August 1, 2026, Margo Tamez, along with family members, were given minutes to evacuate their home due to the catastrophic Bradley Creek Wildfires raging through British Columbia, Canada. While they are safe, her neighbors, members of the Okanagan Indian Band, confirmed to her through video that the house she called home for 14 years on the OKIB reserve was a complete loss. Their home and belongings are totally destroyed, leaving them with just the clothes on their backs, a few cherished items, and a computer for professional duties. Beyond the loss of their home and possessions, the family is also mourning the loss of their beloved cats.

 Margo is Lipan Apache. She grew up in South Texas but has lived and worked in British Columbia for the past 15 years, where she teaches at the University of British Columbia–Okanagan. While Margo resides on Okanagan land and contributes to the community, she is not a member of the Okanagan Indian Band and, as a result, has previously been ineligible to receive tribal disaster relief. Wildfire displacement disproportionately affects Indigenous communities, and this is the second wildfire displacement Margo has survived in the last three years.

 Margo is an accomplished scholar, poet, and community activist. She has published several books of poetry, including Raven Eye and Naked Wanting, and has authored numerous articles on Indigenous women-led social movements.  As of August 2, Margo is on the ground meeting with local relief organizations and her community Elders while navigating the overwhelming task of rebuilding. This fundraiser was organized by two of Margo's colleagues in New Mexico, together with her daughter-in-law in Texas, to help coordinate support across the many communities that care about her. Funds raised will be used to help meet immediate needs resulting from the wildfire, including temporary housing, food, clothing, transportation, replacement of essential belongings, and other recovery expenses as Margo and her family begin rebuilding after their sudden evacuation and loss. Her colleagues in New Mexico, along with family across Texas, Utah, Oklahoma, South Dakota, North Dakota, Kansas, and beyond, are working to bring communities and resources together in support of Margo.

<div>My path to this moment has not been easy. I grew up in instability, spending years in foster care because of drugs and violence in my home, and I was homeless as a teenager. After high school, I joined the Army searching for structure and purpose, but returned from deployments with PTSD, traumatic brain injury, and other lasting injuries. For years I struggled to rebuild my life and find direction. It wasn’t until I began doing community work: showing up for environmental justice, Indigenous sovereignty, and education, documenting our movements with my camera and drone... that I found healing, purpose, and a sense of belonging. This community helped me become the person I am today, and it’s the reason I’m pursuing this degree.

Homeless To Harvard: Support My Journey For Our Community

<div>My father, a hardworking Long Beach street vendor, was out doing what he has always done—working late to support

<div>our family. While selling near Super Good Coin Laundry at Pacific Coast Highway and Pacific Avenue, he was violently assaulted and robbed.

<div>What should have been a normal evening of honest work turned into a terrifying and painful experience. He suffered injuries that now require medical care, and our family is struggling to cope with the emotional and financial burden this attack has caused.

<div>My name is Armando Ibanez. I am a queer immigrant artist from Acapulco, Guerrero, Mexico. In 2016, with limited money and resources, I created a scripted Youtube series called “Undocumented Tales,” which follows the life of an undocumented queer immigrant living in Los Angeles. My vision for that project was to change the narrative around LGBTQ+ undocumented immigrants on the screen and educate audiences about the experiences of LGBTQ and immigrant communites. I was able to write, direct and produce the four season series and has been screened at different universities, community spaces, and film festivals throughout the country.

The participants watched part of the series and the results led to a 3.4-point increase in the audience recognizing that undocumented immigrants face many obstacles in their process to gain legal status in the United States. More than half of the viewers (58 percent) wanted to see more videos/content like it. This data proves that our stories are changing the perceptions of general audiences about undocumented immigrant and LGBTQ communities. Art has the power to change hearts and minds and move audiences.

<div>The film will detail Leonor’s last day in the U.S. The story follows the impact her decision has caused in her family when she decides to return to Mexico after living 35 years in the U.S. Leonor has 3 children: Daniela(46), Zeferino(42), and Chabela(35) who happened to be undocumented immigrants too. Her decision to leave has stirred a wave of emotions among her children since they know, that if she leaves, she might not be able to return to the U.S. Meaning that this could be the last day they see her in person and so they spend time with her because they might not be able to visit her in Mexico. Meanwhile, Daniela, Zeferino, and Chabela are dealing with their own lives.

Susanne F. Tore Tendons and Can’t Walk

<div>Saludos friends, some of you know that my family in San Antonio, Texas faces many challenges regularly. The bad got worse recently, so we need to ask for your help. My little sister, Dee Dee, has struggled with schizophrenia and severe depression for 15 years. In April, she was in the hospital. While she was in there, a squatter broke into her house. The squatter started a fire and fled. The house completely burned down. This is the same house my grandfather built, the house my mom purchased as a widow at the age of 30 with 3 small children. I grew up in this humble house, and it was not in good condition, but it was the only place my sister felt safe to live in. Sadly, we had no insurance on it. We are being charged $3500 for the demolition, and another $2000 for taxes and utilities.
